Svetlana had panicked for a full hour before leaving the house, trying to find the perfect outfit to wear to dinner. She was going to make friends and she couldn't meet them looking like the trash she knew she was, deep down inside. She had to fool them like she had Azrael fooled. If she could just keep up her happy-go-lucky facade, everything would be okay and then she wouldn't be so lonely all the time.

She stood beside her husband, practically shaking with trepidation. She was holding a bowl of cous cous salad in her hands and she was just praying she wouldn't drop it. "Do you think they'll like me?" She asked Azrael, but before he had a chance o answer, the door was opening.

Svetlana smiled at Azrael, ever the proud wife. And really, she was so thankful she'd been given to him. He was so gentle and careful with her. "If I'd been sent back they would have killed me," she said, matter-of-factly. "I know it wasn't what Azra planned, but he protects me."

"They would have killed you?" Lena whispered, absolutely disgusted.

"Yes. It's seen as failure. And if a man isn't happy with the woman he bought, he could potentially cause troubles for them by giving law enforcement information about them. I learned very young not to do anything to upset anyone so I could be the perfect wife. I used to talk back but I got hit so I stopped."

"And this just...happens all the time?" Thomas asked in disbelief.

Svetlana nodded gravely. "I think some people do it because they want to come to America, but others...like me...aren't given a choice. I just got lucky."

"She speaks the truth," Azrael said heavily. "It was somewhat...awkward, at first, trying to adjust to living with someone who had been sent here solely to marry me. But it got easier after a while. Truthfully, it's nice to have another soul in the apartment when I get home from work. It's just been me, rattling around for the longest time."

"And believe me, if I ever figure out who they are, they're going to wish they'd never done it," he added darkly.

Svetlana looked back at Azrael, her smile fond and loving. "He's my best friend," she said, carefully avoiding saying he was her only friend.

"I'm glad that kind of terrible situation ended this way," Thomas said seriously. He was having a very hard time not gathering Svetlana into his arms and promising to be her father forever and ever right then and there. "Look...Svetlana, you have family here whenever you need it, alright? I mean it."

Svetlana blushed slightly, ducking her head. "That is really very kind of you."

Azrael smiled at all of them. "Thank you very much, all of you," he said. "I've felt terrible keeping her inside so much, but there was an...incident a while back. Satan was involved. So this way seemed safer. But I hated keeping you away from people," he said, turning to Svetlana. "It's mostly just been me for company, I can't imagine that's all that invigorating."

"Well we're about as invigorating as it gets," Roxanna laughed. "And we like meeting new people and more less adopting them. Hell, that's how I wound up here, Lena pretty much scooped me up and installed me here."

"And it's been mayhem ever since," Jamie joked, ducking her tossed napkin.

	Lena chuckled at Jamie and Roxanna's antics. "It's true," she grinned. "And we would love to have you any time, Svetlana." "All this time...I never knew people were so nice," Svetlana said, sounding a little overwhelmed. "And it has been very nice, you," she said, elbowing Azrael. "He introduced me to steak and Netflix!" 	"Yeah, you should come over whenever and we can hang out," Roxanna said, spearing some of her salad. "Watch movies or bake or something." Azrael smiled. "There's been a lot of Netflix at our house, it's true," he agreed. "I'm slightly addicted to some of those cooking shows. And I'm glad I at least haven't been boring you to tears." "I would like that," Svetlana nodded. Having people to talk to was going to be so nice! She could maybe teach them a few Russian recipes as well. It would be nice to have a bit of home, even though she had never really been allowed to experience Russia beyond the little houses she was kept in.

"No, Azra," she assured him, "but I think it's good to talk to other humans too? Maybe?"

"Awesome," Jamie said. "Like Lena said, just come on over whenever. It's basically a revolving door of everyone we know."

"And we wouldn't want it any other way," Roxanna added. "Like you'd ever complain about your family and friends being over all the time."

"Good point."

Azrael nodded. "I certainly don't want to keep you isolated forever," he told her. "And you all seem like such welcoming, kind people."

	"So it's okay?" She asked, because she did want to make sure she didn't upset Azrael. He had been so wonderful to her and she wanted to make him happy. "If you want to go shopping, I can take you," Lena chimed in. "We can find some awesome stuff for you!" "Oh, I- I don't have any money," Svetlana said, flushing furiously. "Oh dear," Svetlana said, obviously torn between the idea of going shopping, and taking money from her husband which she was taught never to do. Sure he had bought her things in the past, but she had never really had control of money like that. It was a scary and exhilarating thought. "I mean only if you think it's okay."

"If not I can cover you," Lena winked, just in case it might be somehow easier to take money from a new person. "Roxanna is now a veteran of Lena Shopping Trips."

"Thomas has the fear of Lena Shopping Trips. She would make me try on hot pants or something. Gold ones."

At that, Svetlana let out a delighted shriek of laughter and then covered her face in embarrassment.

"No reason why you couldn't go out and have a good time with Lena," Azrael told her. "Otherwise I'll just buy strange things to try and cook. Which...does not always work out."

Roxanna laughed. "Lena does love to dress me up," she agreed. "Which I'm pretty OK with now, though it took some getting used to after living solely in jeans and t-shirts for almost twenty years."

Jamie just laughed into his food. "I'm torn between wanting this to happen, and never wanting to see it," he informed Lena.

"Oh it's happening now, look at Svetlana's face!" Lena giggled. "We'll drag him with us, hmm?" Svetlana giggled again and nodded.

"Oi! Peer pressure!" To Azrael he smiled and shrugged, "this is how it goes now. It's two against one. I feel you on the cooking though, some of my experiments have gone very badly." Sure that was because he couldn't always afford the right kind of ingredients and he had tried to improvise, but he wasn't going to say that now, and bring everyone down.

It made Azrael happy to see her smile and laugh like that. "I'm starting to gather that," he told Thomas, amused and not really inclined to say anything against it, not if it made the two women happy.

He chuckled and nodded, sipping at his water. "I've found that if I try to go too far outside my wheelhouse, invariably, something ends up burnt. And I'm trying my best not to just burn the whole kitchen down."

Azrael laughed, snorted, then coughed to dislodge the bread he almost choked on. Once he could speak again he said, "I ran into Victor a few times while he was still a detective. We weren't close, but he always seemed nice enough."

"I'm not really sure, but this is what our family is like all the time," Roxanna told her. "Loud, crazy, and always wanting to make sure that the people we care about are happy. This is the default setting, if you will."
