WHO: The Delacroix boys (minus Jayden) and Ceridwen
WHAT: MOM!?
WHEN: Saturday morning
WHERE: Out and aboot!
WARNINGS: ??

Adrian had convinced the remaining brothers he had home to come shopping with him on Saturday morning. He had spent the last decade, nearly, living out of one suitcase and he still didn't have much in the way of possessions. Now that he was no longer living a nomadic lifestyle, he figured he should invest in at least some more clothes.

Clothes shopping had never been his thing and while he didn't think it was really Isaiah's or Jesse's either, at least he was in good company. When he had gone shopping with JJ she had made him try too many things on. He adored her, but he didn't have that kind of energy.

"Okay," he said as they exited a shop, "I managed to get a few pairs of jeans and some casual tops, which is better than the non-casual stuff I've been wearing for years. I think we deserve a treat. Maybe an early lunch?"

As far as she knew, Ceridwen had no family in the city, so she was more than used to minding her own business, and going her own way. She'd been meaning to do a few quick things and go straight back home, but apparently, fate had other plans today.

She caught sight of the trio of boys across the street, and her heart leaped into her throat. It wasn't possible, her boys couldn't be here. Could they? She froze too, mirroring Adrian without realizing it, before slowly making her way to the crosswalk.

Jesse followed Adrian's gaze, his eyes locking onto the woman across the street. "Something tells me this isn't that demon again," he said faintly.

"Well she's headed this way, what do we do?" Isaiah hissed.

"We get some answers," Jesse said darkly.

Adrian's mouth had gone dry because someone who was the spitting image of their dead mother was currently heading towards them. "How can we be sure?" Adrian hissed, trying discretely to put Isaiah behind him. "How can we be sure it's not a demon?!" The demon had already taken their dead father's face to fuck with Jayden. What if it was doing it again?!

Ceridwen's heart was pounding in her chest, every step bringing her towards...towards what, she wasn't sure. She just knew there was a possibility that it could get ugly, quickly.

"I guess we can't be 100% sure, but from what I understand, it likes the lone victims it can overpower easily," Jesse told him. "Three people on a crowded street, that'd draw attention. And not the kind they like."

Ceridwen had finally come within ten feet of them, and it seemed like all anyone could do was stare at each other. She finally closed the gap before saying softly, "Hello, boys."

That actually made sense, but he still didn't understand how their dead mother was now in front of them. Zombies?! Were zombies a thing?

And then she spoke and oh god, Adrian knew that voice. He had tried to hear that beautiful voice so many times when he closed his eyes and tried to shut out everything that was happening to him-

"Mom," he breathed, breaking the silence. "H- How?!"

Jesse had started to tremble very slightly, and Isaiah squeezed his wrist once. "Yeah, I'd like to know that, too," he added. "Considering the last time I saw you, you had just died."

Ceridwen winced. "Yes, well...it's not a nice story, and I can't guarantee it will make you feel any less angry."

"Try us," Isaiah said flatly.

She hesitated for a few moments before saying, "Very well. But not here. Let's at least get out of the wind."

Adrian was beginning to feel like he was surely dreaming, because this made no sense. Their mother was alive? How was this even possible!?

"Yeah. Out of the wind. Somewhere where we can talk because I don't understand what the hell is going on."

Jesse led them all to a small coffee shop not far away, snagging a table for them away from the door. He joined the line and got coffees for everyone, then came back, took his seat, and simply said, "Go on, then."

Ceridwen sipped hesitantly at her coffee. "You remembered," she said quietly. "More milk, less sugar." Jesse didn't say anything.

She cleared her throat. "You all have a right to know, and I was going to tell all of you when you were older, but...my name isn't Denise. My name is Ceridwen, the Welsh goddess of inspiration. I met your father a long time ago, and I stopped my wandering for a while; I settled down and made a home with him. But he...he started to notice that I didn't age. He finally made me tell him the truth, and when I did, he...he beat me. I couldn't walk for two days. When I was up and around again, that was when he mandated that I had to leave. Or he'd drag our entire family through hell."

"That sounds like Dad," Isaiah said darkly. "Bitter as a lemon."

"He basically told me we'd stage an accident, and I'd be able to leave," she continued. "I was scared he'd kill me if I stayed, or he'd turn his sights on you boys."

"Yeah, well, he did that anyway," Jesse muttered.

There didn't seem to be anything sinister behind their mother's sudden reemergence and that was why Adrian decided it probably wasn't a demon.

Of course that meant their mother had faked her death and left them willingly. He didn't know if that was better.

"He did," Adrian nodded, not even touching his coffee. "He-" Adrian shook his head and glanced over at Jesse. "He was horrible. Not so much to me, for some reason I was his favourite, but I had to watch him come down so hard on my brothers-" Adrian cut himself off, because Jesse's story was his to tell. Jayden, however, wasn't here to tell his

"Jayden. Richard somehow decided Jayden was worth less than the dirt on his shoe and he treated him like shit. And when Isaiah tried to intervene- Goddammit."

Ceridwen felt her face darken as Adrian spoke, and she let out a few choice words in Welsh. "I didn't think-I had hoped he'd raise all of you as best he could, but apparently that was simply a fever dream."

"Dad threw me out for being bi," Jesse said. "He found out about a boy I was seeing, and gave me an hour to pack and get out. He told me that he was glad you weren't alive to see what I had become."

Ceridwen banged her fist on the table, startling Isaiah, who spilled some of his coffee on his sleeve. "I'm sorry," she said, passing him some napkins. "That man, though. I have half a mind to go back down there and give him a piece of my mind."

"Life beat you to the punch," Isaiah told her dryly. "He had a stroke. He's dead."

She blinked a few times, purely out of surprise. "Well. I can't say I'm sorry."

"I don't think anyone is," Jesse told her.

"He had no right to treat any of you like that," she said, addressing all of them again. "I didn't-I wish I'd known. I wish I'd gone back. I thought about it, a handful of times. But I was afraid."

"Yeah, Dad'll do that," Jesse said, softening ever so slightly. "I thought about going back too, after he kicked me out. I just always thought I'd get met at the door with a shotgun."

Adrian realised, quietly, that he couldn't blame her for not returning either. After all, he hadn't. He had run away from that place so fast and avoided it with all his might, and he had known that his younger brothers were suffering. Their mother may have worried about it, but she hadn't known.

"I missed you," he said quietly, staring at the table. "We missed you. Do you live in the city? If you don't I'm- I think you should move here."

Jesse looked over at Adrian, then back at his mother. "I'm still not terribly happy," he said, sighing. "I mean, I get why you left. But at least you had a choice."

"What choice?" Isaiah asked. "The lesser of two evils, sounds like. Which is very Dad."

Ceridwen looked down at her hands. "I do live here, yes. I moved here a few years ago, I'd been living in Maine previously. If you wanted...I'd like to see all of you sometimes. I understand if you're not ready, or if you don't want to right away. But I feel like I have a lot to make up for. And a lot to catch up on."

"No-" Adrian said quickly, because the thought of her leaving now that he had her back was terrifying. "No, ple-" he swallowed the word because he didn't want to beg. "Just don't go. Can she come to the house, Jesse?" He didn't blame Jesse for being upset still, but Adrian was feeling intensely clingy all of a sudden. "Is that okay? She could meet JJ and Nicholas. And god...Jayden is away for the weekend but you have to see him. He's been through so much."

Jesse wanted to say no, because he'd spent 16 years missing a mother who he thought had died, only to find out she'd left. Well, alright, been forced to leave. But she'd still gone. (A part of his mind was saying th at he should have a bit more sympathy, her choice had been no choice at all. She couldn't have come back any more than he could have.)

Isaiah nudged him gently in the ribs. "I think it'd be a good idea, Jesse," he said softly. "Weren't you saying once that it was a shame that Mama had missed pretty much all of Jayden's life? Now he could finally get to know her. We could try and start over."

Jesse looked between both of his brothers. They both seemed to really want this, so he nodded, after a moment. "Maybe once Jay gets back from his weekend?"

Ceridwen smiled, a little tremulously. "That sounds nice," she agreed.

"I think so," Isaiah said. "Then again, who can tell, the way our lives have gone lately?"

"I'd settle for a solid month of normal," Jesse said tiredly. Isaiah snorted. "Yeah, I won't disagree with you there."

Ceridwen finished the last of her coffee. "I'm not keeping you from anything, am I?" she asked. "I feel like if we leave, it'll be like it never happened and I'll never see any of you again."

"No! No, you're not keeping us from anything! We were a little wary before. Uhm...a demon kidnapped Jayden. He looked like Father and he left Jayden trapped in a room for days until someone found him. So. Things have been a bit- You know. Messed up."

"It sounds like 'messed up' is putting it mildly," she replied, raising her eyebrows. "But Jayden, is Jayden alright?"

"He's doing better," Isaiah answered. "That thing didn't feed or look after him, so he had to go into the hospital for a few days afterward. But he's home now and seems to be doing OK."

"Yeah, and I'd be perfectly happy if he, and all of us, would stay that way," Jesse added. "We've had our fill of excitement for the year, I think."

Adrian wanted to tell her more, but the poor woman was probably on information overload as it was. "Me too," he said, instead. "There's good stuff too. We all came together. I'm actually going to university, which I never thought I could do. Jayden's studying music."

Ceridwen smiled at him, pleased. "That's wonderful," she said. "I'm glad you're getting to attend. What sort of music is Jayden studying?"

"He plays the piano," Jesse said. "Pretty brilliantly, actually. It's sort of amazing."

"And you, Jesse?" she asked. "What have you been doing?"

Jesse shrugged. "Life, mostly. Looking after the three of them, helping to run the house." He wasn't terribly sure how to bring up the 'I'm also in a relationship with two other people' bit of news, and he figured there'd been enough of spilling information for today.

Adrian gave his older brother a half-smile, understanding there were clearly things he didn't want to get in to right away. "He took care of Jayden after Father died. Jayden says over and over than Jesse saved him."

That made her smile. She wanted to reach out and take Jesse's hand, but she had a feeling that might not be well received. "Perhaps I have no right to say this, but...I'm very proud of you, Jesse. For taking care of all of them."

Jesse looked down at his hands. "That's my job," he said. "Big brother mother henning. I never stopped worrying about them."

Adrian watched the moment pass between them, and it was like every painful moment he had lived through since she had left them crashed straight into his chest. It was hard to breathe, suddenly, and he could feel himself tearing up. He remembered, vaguely, a time when Jesse had been essentially herding them all around the backyard, but in his gentle way even as a kid. He recalled their mother crossing to him and putting her hand on Jesse's shoulder. The smile on Jesse-s face-

"Oh, Jesus," Adrian whispered, wiping at his eyes.

Isaiah put one hand on Adrian's back. "It's OK, Ade," he said softly. "Or if it's not right now, hopefully it will be soon."

Ceridwen smiled, rising from her chair. "Of course you can, dear," she said, moving to embrace him. She never thought she'd get the chance to embrace any of her grown sons, and perhaps it should have been stranger to her, but it wasn't. This was her child, her own flesh and blood, and it felt like the first step toward going home.

She couldn't help it, she started to tear up too, sniffling as she stepped back.

Adrian couldn't help it, the moment he was in his mother's arms, he breathed her in and held on tight. His life had been unimaginably painful and for over a decade he had been wishing there was someone out there who could just...just for a moment, hold him and reassure him everything was okay.

He wiped at his eyes when she stepped back, and offered her a watery smile. "I'm gonna need your phone number and a promise you're not going anywhere, okay?"

"Of course," she said, wiping at her own eyes. She pulled a pen out of her purse, scrawling her number onto a napkin. "And I have no plans to go anywhere, not for a long while yet. I promise. For whatever that's worth to you."

Isaiah stood slowly, walking around to the other side of the table. God, he'd grown up missing his mother and not knowing her hardly at all, and now here she was, right in front of him. She smiled at him, and he folded himself into her arms, resting his chin on her shoulder.

Jesse didn't begrudge his brothers their reunion, although he did appreciate the hug. "Should we give you a call once Jayden gets back?" he asked.
