WHO: Adrian and Isaiah Delacroix
WHAT: Touching base
WHEN: Sunday afternoon
WHERE: Their respective places (phone conversation)
WARNINGS: ???

Adrian had been back in the United States for a week now, though he had spent most of it going around to different churches in California, sharing his experiences. He didn't need to be in New York for a little while yet, so he was taking his time and staying in various church parsonages. He couldn't keep from contacting his brothers forever though.

Considering he was going to be in New York soon enough, which was where Jesse and Jayden were, Adrian thought getting in touch with Isaiah was a good idea. As much as he was half-dreading it, he needed to get over that. Bite the bullet, so to speak.

With a shaking hand, Adrian dialled Isaiah's number and prayed (metaphorically speaking, as Adrian didn't believe in prayer at all) that his brother wouldn't hang up on him.

Upon hearing his brother's voice, Isaiah dropped the phone. It had been a really long time since they'd spoken, and he hadn't been sure when they would again.

He dug under his desk for his fallen phone, bringing it back up to his ear and managing to say, "Sorry, sorry, I dropped it. Guess you surprised me, Ade. How've you been?"

Adrian thought Isaiah had hung up for a moment and he felt like his heart was breaking. When Isaiah spoke again though, relief flooded through him. "It's okay," he said quickly. "I'm sorry to shock you, I just- I'm back in the country and I've been thinking about all of you a lot."

"Oh yeah?" Isaiah asked, leaning back in his chair and propping his feet up on the desk. "When'd you get back?" It felt weird, making small talk with his older brother like he was some kind of acquaintance he was trying to get to know again.

"A week ago," Adrian said, settling down on the parsonage couch. "I was in Papua New Guinea for the past year, which was fortunate. Before that I was in Northern Africa and I would've been in the middle of the ebola crisis." Adrian would have loved to be there for the victims, but he knew it was better left to health care professionals.

"I'm uhm...not going out again. I'm leaving the mission."

"Well I'm real glad you missed the ebola crisis," Isaiah told him, sliding further down into his chair in attempt to get comfortable. "I spent most of the last year convinced I was going to fail all my classes. Didn't, thankfully."

"Really?" he asked, confused but maybe a bit pleased that his brother wasn't going to another far-flung corner of the world in a week. "How come? If you don't mind me asking."

Adrian smiled softly at that. "I'm glad you didn't fail, Isaiah. I think- No, I know I did what I did because I was running. Our father is dead and the house is sold. I don't have anything to run from any more. I accepted a job in New York and I know Jayden and Jesse are there."

"Thanks, you and me both," Isaiah sighed.

"Maybe not, but you still won't catch me going home any time soon," he replied. Then he sat up straight. "You mean to tell me I've been a day's train ride from them all this time and he didn't say anything? And now you'll be up this way too, which means you have to come and visit me."

"He didn't tel- Nevermind," Adrian said with a sigh. He wasn't going into this to badmouth his brothers. "Yeah, they're in the city. Look, I was thinking uhm...can I come to see you in Boston? Maybe we could go down to the city together?"

"Yeah, sure you can," Isaiah told him. "Remind me occasionally to sleep and eat and look at the sun. And then we can head up to see them. I'll pretend to be 'sick'." Even though Adrian couldn't see him, he made the air quotes with his fingers.

Adrian narrowed his eyes even though Isaiah couldn't see him. "You haven't been eating?! Isaiah!"

"Oh for god's sake, Ade, lighten up," Isaiah laughed. "I do eat. In between writing essays, and making outlines, and worrying about my GPA. My roommate sticks Easy Mac by my elbow where I can't miss it. Though he can't talk, he's pre-med, I don't think he sleeps more than four hours a night."

The moment his brother told him to lighten up, Adrian grinned and everything seemed like it might be okay. He chuckled and said, "thank him for me if he hasn't turned into a zombie. I can do it in person soon enough. How soon do you finish your degree again?"

"I will. I'm also going to make said Easy Mac, since you reminded me that I'm hungry." Isaiah wedged the phone between his shoulder and ear, and headed toward the suite's small kitchen.

"Uh...graduation's at the end of May, but my last final is the 15th, I think," he continued, filling the cup with water and popping it in the microwave. "They give us those two weeks to drink, collapse, and recover in time for the ceremony, I think."

"Good recovery time," Adrian said softly. "I really want to be there, Isaiah. Can I watch you graduate?" Considering he hadn't seen any of his brothers in years and he had missed all of their high school graduations, the idea of being there for it made Adrian feel very emotional.

"Necessary," Isaiah countered. "Because I, for one, intend to get very drunk and then sleep for three days. And maybe burn some papers."

Adrian's question made him smile softly. "Sure you can, Ade," he said, stirring his noodles. "Hell, maybe we can get Jesse and Jay to come down too."

"We should," Adrian agreed. "Make it a family event. I've missed you all so much. I- I'm sorry."

"I'd like that," Isaiah said, the smile evident in his voice. "Ade, you don't have anything to be sorry for. Hell, I left as soon as I graduated too, and don't think the guilt at leaving Jay behind doesn't weigh on me. That place turned toxic after Mom died and Jesse got kicked out. We did what we had to do to keep our heads above water."

Adrian didn't want to explain why he had left, specifically, so he just let it hang there for a moment. "I'm glad Jay's with Jesse," he finally said instead. "Jesse got him out. Have you been okay? You don't talk to them?"

"Me too," Isaiah sighed. Talking about their old house, their old lives, it always made him tired and tense.

"Not really," he answered, sighing again. "I called after I heard Dad had died, but we didn't really talk much beyond sorting out the details. I didn't know where Jesse was living at the time, and I didn't know Jayden was planning to go with him, but I'm glad he did. But no, I haven't heard from them since."

"I haven't really either, but I must have heard from them after you did. We need to fix that. I mean...if you want to? I want you guys in my life again."

"I miss you guys," he admitted. "But I didn't know where either of you went, and I just...I didn't know if I'd ever see you again. And wasn't that just a depressing thought. So yeah, we should."

"Oh Isaiah, I'm so sorry. Look, I'll book my flight now, okay? I can even fly in tomorrow. Do you want me to fly in tomorrow?
