Entry tags:achilles, peleus, thetis

Who: Thetis, Achilles, & Peleus
What: Mother/son dinner interruptus
When: Tuesday evening
Where: Il Buco
Warnings: With these three? Expect a scene. And swearing. And possibly throwing of table ware.

Thetis had decided that the best course of action to perk her up was a dinner out with her son. She hadn't spent as much time with him as she'd like to lately, but she was hoping to change that. He usually had the added benefit of calming her down when her emotions reached a fever pitch, and she could really use that right now. (Of course, sometimes it went the other way, and her blood got even further riled, but she was hoping that wouldn't be the case tonight.)

And for most of the night, it went exactly as she'd hoped. They had a lovely meal together, talking and catching each other up on new events in their lives. Thetis inquired after Polyxena and the health of their child, and filled Achilles in on her job search. It wasn't that she needed the money, exactly, but she did like having something to fill her days with.

She had just been perusing the desert menu, when a familiar, nagging presence made her sit up straight, eyes narrowing. "Shit," she whispered, snapping the menu closed and taking a sip of her wine.

Achilles didn't get as much time with his mother now as he would have liked, but every moment was always sacred. She was a figure that he would always look up to in guidance, especially now when he had this child coming into the world that he really had no idea how to welcome. He'd expressed his concerns to her hoping that she could put him at ease, in between this tension with her and his father. He too had not been so generous in his welcoming of Peleus. Part of it was Achilles being terrified that he might slip and make the same mistakes and he did not wish that on Polyxena.

The muscles in his back tensed as he straightened up at Thetis' concern. "What is it mother?" Having never met Peleus beyond being a little boy cast off to Chiron with Patroclus, it was difficult for Achilles to have any outward knowledge of when he was near. His main concern was the fact that his mother was troubled and he was immediately on the defense.

Thetis pursed her lips, tightening her fingers around the stem of her wine glass. "Your father is here," she hissed through clenched teeth. "I don't understand how he keeps finding me. Once is happenstance. Twice is a coincidince. Three times...I call bullshit." She sighed, draining the last of her wine. "And we were having such a nice night, too."

"Why would he be here?" Of course they all had the right to be anywhere within the city, but there were limits that Achilles was not going to allow. Peleus was overstepping his bounds too soon for either of them to deal with rationally, or like adults. "Where is he?" he turned around sharply to locate the man who had taken a seat at the bar. Surely he noticed them? But Peleus had yet to actually look over, giving Thetis at least that space of knowing he was there without making a move.

Thetis sighed. "He may very well have come in on a whim. But instead of leaving, he seems to have this need to...assert his dominance, be the alpha male he thought he was back in ancient times. He's told me before that he has every right to live here and hax no intention of going away, fine, whatever. I just wish I didn't have to keep seeing him."

She nodded over to where Peleus was seated. "That's him, over there at the bar."

What Achilles had gained from both his parents was pride. Peleus was stomping on old grounds and Achilles too offense. How dare he come back around, throw himself in his life and put Achilles in this giant storm with his mother as if he were in some custody battle he wasn't allowed to have a say so in. Grown or not, Achilles was the child between them.

"Then he's not welcome here." Achilles scooted his chair back, that look on his face that only a warrior knew. It meant this could end very unpleasantly.

Throughout this whole thing, Thetis had felt guilty that Achilles was caught in the middle of their feud. She was pleased he seemed to mostly be on her side, but she still wished she could have spared him most of this.

She glanced up as Achilles started to stand. "Achilles, what are you doing?" she whispered. She'd seen that look on his facs before, and it had rarely ended well for everyone involved.

"He's wanted to meet with me, I'm giving him his chance." But he was brash and reckless when his emotions played on his decisions. The entire Greek army wouldn't have sat for weeks at a time because Achilles had brooded over the loss of his war prize. Achilles would put Peleus in his place, father or not.

Thetis opened her mouth, then closed it again. She knew that trying to hold Achilles back when he'd made up his mind was like trying to hold back the Aegean with a broom: nigh on impossible. At the same time, though, she knew there was a time and a place for this confrontation, and here was probably not the best one.

Weighing her options, though, would really take more time than she had, so she just sighed and signalled for the check. It was probably for the best that they got all of this over and out in the open, anyway.

Peleus knew that confrontation was near, Achilles had a lot of anger that he needed to let out, but Peleus would not be just another villain for him to take down. When he turned he put a hand on Achilles' shoulder.

"Achilles," was all he could say hoping it stilled the warrior. He owed Peleus respect as an elder, as his father. Wasn't the golden warrior not reacting as childish as his own son had to him. And yet it seemed justified here if only because Thetis was involved.

Thetis was still slightly unsure how events were going to unfold. There hadn't been any shouting, or punches thrown, but they'd only been in contact for a few moments.

The bottle of wine she'd ordered with dinner was still on the table, and she poured herself another glass before heading over to the bar. She had a distinct feeling she was really going to need it to get through tonight.

"Do not reach out in such a comforting way. As if I am a child to be consoled," Achilles voice was thick and heavy. It was a spear into Peleus' gut.

Peleus' face soured immediately, his hand stilled, unclasping from Achilles' shoulder as his own son showed such hate in his eyes.

Thetis sipped at her wine, one eyebrow raised. "Don't look so offended, he's not wrong," she told Peleus. "You haven't been involved in his life since he was a literal child. I'm not surprised at all that he's still angry."

"I deserve more respect than that Achilles." Peleus would not let up on his son's or his wife's dismissal. "I was a soldier like you Achilles, I---" but he was cut off quickly with a finger in the face as his son seethed at him his hate.

"You were nothing more to me than a name. A ghost of a man who gave me a spear to cart off to war. Given to me not even by you but by Odysseus. You were just a story told me at night when old warriors wanted to remember their glory days. You were no father. I am the man I am because of my own glory, not because you handed anything to me or taught me how to be a man."

Everything Achilles was saying, it might as well have been pulled from Thetis' own mind. But he was starting to shout and draw attention to them, and so she laid one hand lightly on his shoulder.

"No one is doubting your deeds, love," she said in a soothing tone of voice. "Or that he was much more than a ghost of a man, a man who stole my child from my arms and left me to deal with my grief. A man who never even came back to bury his son." Anger had started to seep into her voice as she talked, which she did nothing to stop.

"That is far from fair---" Peleus started but he knew that here was not the place to have this conversation. "This is not the place for this." His intentions for Achilles had always been to make him a man. To know how to even hurl a spear which he would have never learned had he lived cloaked under the guise of a woman the rest of his life. Or burned by his mother in that fire before she could try and steal him away. He had take Achilles to Charon. Charon was the teacher that Peleus had not been, yes, but that was for his son's growth. To give him the best chance at being the kind of warrior a father could be proud of.

Weakness as it had been for his son was not acceptable. Peleus was never supposed to bury his son before he himself had been an old man. He was not supposed to watch his ashes scatter away into the ocean and have the prick of tears under his eyes where Thetis could see. That had been his reasons of not showing. In the end he would have broken down and she would have seen.

"I'm simply telling the truth," Thetis replied with a shrug. "As is he. If you can't handle it, you're welcome to present your side. Or perhaps, simply not say anything." Peleus had never been the chatty type, and she doubted that had changed much, no matter how much time had passed. He might be standing by his actions from so long ago, but so was she. She had only ever wanted the best for her son, why couldn't he see that?
