Who: Briareos and Kymopoleia
What: The Hekantonkheries gets a customer that is more than he bargained for...someone happens to come by.
When: Friday, October 25th
Where: Briareos' Tattoo parlor

There was no bell on the outside of his door so Briareos only knew he had a customer when they walked in. He was in the back room with an army of boxes holding the door open in case it closed in behind him. The world wasn't as claustrophobic as it had once been, but he wasn't taking any chances because there was a lock from the outside. The week had been fairly slow, his artist had left for the afternoon, so he was left alone in this shop which often became home when the lights went out. There was a bright red couch on the side of one wall, and a mural of a sperm whale and a giant squid. It was a reminder that there were still monsters in this world that would survive. He wasn't going to keep himself in a cage even if Poseidon had brought him in one.

A burly looking man came into the front door, his boots scuffing the wooden floor which was loud enough to tell Briareos he had company. "Who's there?" he called out, but when a few minutes went by with no answer he came out from the back to see the man standing like a statue. A chill went up his spine for a reason he wasn't sure, but he had no reason to be on the defensive. The man looked like he was just looking for a place to hide as he kept his eye out the door nervously. Briaroes could respect that as he often kept himself off the radar. "Need something?"

The man looked around kicking a chair with his boot and dipping his fingers into some ink that had been left behind by the artist. "I came in here a few weeks ago. I don't like what I got." Briareos didn't look particularly sympathetic. "Go somewhere else. I'm not the artist." He had done some work, but he preferred to be in the shadows. He was the owner but he wasn't about to open his doors for a complaint. He wasn't a fast food service. The man shuffled his hands into his pockets.

"Look punk. It's a shit tattoo and I want it fixed." Briareos picked up one of the boxes sitting by his desk. "I told you. Go somewhere else. The artist isn't here and we're closed." The man was irate, something Briareos could smell a mile away. The man shoved his way out of the store. A few hours passed so Briareos had no reason to have his defenses up, but the man was waiting out in the dark alley as Briareos closed up. He was thrown across the street against the dumpsters. Briareos had enough hate to feed off of that he could drag this man down the alley by his feet and snap every bone in his body. His hackles went up, and his lanky arms lashed out as if there were twenty. He hadn't yet grown anymore arms from his shoulders, but when he was threatened these days, ever since that hurricane a year ago it felt like they could grow like trees. The seeds were there, they just needed the nourishment. It had been overcast all day, so when the rain started to pelt down in fat blobs it made his skin crawl. He was sure at that moment when the man lunged at him again he felt an arm trying to make it's way out of his back.

"What the fuck you freak?!" the man staggered back looking at Briareos as if he were nothing more than a sideshow. It was a look he got often, it didn't seem very unique in this situation. But, it was the second hand that touched his arm that made him jump. Sure enough, the freak had finally had one of those extra arms appear for the first time in centuries. It startled him, he looked at it with wonderment, but just like a plant that had it's leaves plucked, it was weak---and when the man went at him with a knife stabbing at his shoulder repeatedly, it retreated almost as quickly as it had emerged. The man stabbed his shoulder again, until there was nothing but deep red blood coating Briareos' arm. When he looked down he was certain that both of them were just hallucinating because that just couldn't happen anymore. Still freaked out the man took the knife to his side when he tried to stand up, running off just as quickly when he heard someone else within the dark alley walls.

She was trying to revive something out of him despite the fact that it could bring out something dangerous. He needed it now or he was going to suffocate. He gripped her wrist this time, not to hurt but to prove be wasn't going to drown in the darkness. He'd been kept in darkness too long. He was free of it, never again.

His other hand went to pull up the tank to reveal the gash, pulsating with the beat of his slowed heartbeat. He made a nod with his head for her to go for it, he was used to pain...

"Good," Ky said fiercely as he grabbed hold of her. Let him squeeze, let him half break her wrist if that was what needed to happen.

With her spare hand she grabbed a pencil pot nearby and pulled out four of them, shoving them between his teeth. "You need to bite down on this," she told him, unwrapping his fingers from around her wrist so she could stand up. "This is going to really fuckin hurt and if you scream too loud the cops will show up."

She went for the iron, moving quickly back towards him and then waiting no longer to prepare him. She pressed the steaming metal against his skin and there was a hiss of burning flesh and the sickening smell quickly surrounded her. She gagged a little at it, removing the heat and placing it back down against a different part. Ky knew only that she had to get all the cuts and seal them with the heat, and that probably she shouldn't leave it on any longer than it took to do that. It seemed like burning through more of his skin would only make it worse.

There was a time the earth would clap and crack under his feet. The tide would roll at his command. He was frightening to anyone who dared to even look at him. Now was the time to remember that as the pain ripped through his body. His hand gripped one chair handle nearly crushing it. His voice was a choked scream, muffled only by his teeth as they clamped onto the pencils. It was better those too than his tongue as they cracked in his mouth from the pressure. The smell was horrible, he could feel the bile reach his throat but at least now she wasn't a blur.

Eventually Kymopoleia decided she'd done as much as she could and she put the iron down. The stench was horrendous and she moved around the room now, opening all the windows and doors she could find. She didn't bother telling Briareos not to move. She knew that bloodloss and the shock of the pain he'd just been through meant he wouldn't be going anywhere for a while. For all she knew, he still might die.

Walking back to him she looked down at the slumped monster and considered her next move. Probably he was going to get infected. Irons weren't really sterile and neither were dirty back alleys. So she went to the cash register and unlocked it, pulling out a handful of cash.

"Back soon," she told him, heading for the door. But then she caught her reflection and realised she was a mess. She couldn't go walking into shops covered in blood like this. So she pulled off her ruined singlet and tossed it aside. Her jeans were dark and hid the blood better, so they could stay. She went out the back again to where she'd seen the sink in her earlier search for the iron, and there she cleaned herself up enough to pass among people without comment.

"I need something to wear," she said, but almost as soon as she'd said it she found a coat fallen on the floor near Briareos. She leaned across him and grabbed it, putting it on and zipping it up. "Okay, gotta get some stuff now. You gonna be okay for a bit?"

He'd slumped in the chair still breathing in the smell of charred flesh, throwing the pencils down to the floor. It didn't matter because his tongue was still numb, tasting only that smell of death. He hadn't tasted anything so vile since the Titianomachy.

"Yeah," he said biting back the pain. He wasn't sure if she would really be back or just wanted to rob his register, but in the back of his mind he actually hoped she did or he might still just die right in that chair. He flopped his head back staring up at the ceiling, keeping his eyes on something so that he didn't lose his focus or knock out from the pain, but it was intense. The veins in his neck were still clearly visible as he ground his teeth together.

It was twenty minutes before Kymopoleia returned with a plastic bag of things, dropping them on the counter.

"You still with me?" she asked him as she opened the bottle of Everclear she'd found in a nearby liquor store. She walked over towards him and poured it on his back, not bothering to warn him that it was going to sting. Then she passed him the bottle. "Here. Drink some of this. It'll help."

Then from the bag she pulled out crumpled McDonalds bag and pulled a chair over in front of Briareos. "You need to eat something," she told him. "You've lost a lot of blood and I think eating helps. Don't drink too much of that alcohol," she added as she unwrapped a burger.

He was pretty sure he'd lost a few minutes without knowing where he was while she was gone. He bristled like a cat when she poured down the bottle which stung both his arm and the side he'd been stabbed with repeatedly. He gripped the bottle from her forcefully, shaking some of it onto the floor before taking a huge swig. It burned on the way down but at least it kept his insides from coming up.

Once she had lawfully been his wife, this little scared bride that he told what to do and where to go. He'd kept her in his own little cage, but now she had spread her wings. Never had they shared a moment that was truly that of a married couple. Tonight was that rare moment. They'd finally grown towards each other instead of fighting tooth and nail.

He stared at the burger wanting to push it aside. His eyes glazed over a little moving his gaze up at her as he hung himself on the arm of the chair. "Can't." He wasn't sure he could keep it down, but he had a feeling she was going to make him.

"Nope," she said firmly, not willing to let him out of it that easily. "You're gonna eat some of this. Come on."

She pulled her chair closer in front of him - maybe the closest she'd chosen to be to him ever, her legs slipping between his - and held up the burger to his lips. "Just a bit. I'm gonna make you drink some of this soda I've got here too."

It was agony to think of swallowing anything solid. His eyes rolled closed for a minute trying to still himself long enough to try. The hand still holding onto the Everclear was shaking, fingers glued to the bottle with his own blood.

"Keeping me alive?" He tried to laugh but it was weak, eyes which normally had been so ugly were dull. He was still fighting to hang on. For a minute he had to wonder if he'd lost so much blood that he'd just hallucinated her here right now. She'd fought so long to tell him he wasn't her husband, why now would it seem that they were actually married?

He unclipped his hand from the bottle, squeezing it between his side and the arm of the chair to reach out. There was a strand of her hair hanging that he wanted to rub between his fingers to prove to himself that she was real but he didn't, he took the burger trying to will himself to eat when all the muscles in his body wanted to collapse.

"Yeah, I don't get it either," Kymopoleia said, "so just be thankful and eat the damn burger."

Ky remained close, watching him eat and not letting him but it down until he'd eaten half of it at least.

"Is someone going to come to work here tomorrow morning?" she asked him, reaching out to hold his chin again to keep his focus. It seemed to be a good enough way as any other to get his attention on her words. "Because then we either need to get you to wherever you live, or make sure no one's going to see you and this place."

He wondered if she'd been bit by Eros' arrows, but she didn't seem to be exuding anything unnatural like love. It was genuine concern, something else that was just as foreign to him.

She was touching him again. Close. Without cringing. He held as steady of a gaze as he could manage trying more importantly to keep down the food he'd swallowed. It made his stomach twist into knots. "They will." The thoughts of moving were just as horrible as the food. That meant he'd have to go home to his one room apartment without passing out. He still needed to stay awake, at least long enough for her to be certain he wasn't going to croak.

"Alright then," Ky said, leaning back as she considered their options. "Here's what's going to happen: I'm going to help you get home and you're going to sleep. Probably for a week or something with all that bloodloss. I'll call a taxi. You live far?"

He nodded weakly wondering how he was going to manage to unhinge himself from that chair. He used what strength he could to try and lift, but that arm was just as sore as his side and it wobbled throwing him back down in the seat. "Just two blocks." He couldn't get much else out and he attempted to stand again. He wasn't going to drown. He wasn't going to let death be an excuse to miss out on what was unfolding between them. It worried him because this shouldn't be the way it was.

"Don't move your arm," Kymopoleia chided him, slapping his hand. Not that this would be helping the pain. She wondered if she could get him to his apartment carrying him, but the idea of even two blocks seemed way too far.

So, sighing, she stood up and went to get his phone, sitting back down on her seat and watching Briareos while it rang. As she requested the taxi, she inspected him carefully, checking if he was bleeding again. But the iron had done its job.

Hanging up she said, "cab'll be here soon. You look a mess though."

At one time he had reminded her so much of her father. His image now was still quite similar, just smaller in stature. Taking another big swig of the Everclear he let it burn down again. There was no hiding really the messy blood-stained clothes, he wasn't in a position to think about how he looked.

He looked down to his feet, those black combat boots stained now like the rest of him. "Are you coming?" He wasn't sure why he bothered to ask. He was used to being alone, it was far easier to be himself that way. They hadn't shared a single space together in a long, long time. It was the first time he actually needed someone else to hold him up and keep him from fading away. He was stronger when he was around her.

"Yeah," Ky said as she stood up, "but I'll have to come back here and clean this place up afterwards or else your people are gonna talk." She walked back over to the open cash register and took out more money for the taxi - more than they'd need, enough for hush money on his bloody appearance if need be.

She shoved the notes into the pocket of her jeans and then went to find clean towels, soaking them under the tap in the back and then coming back out to Briareos. Sitting down she started cleaning him off as much as she could.

She was going out of her way to help him, something no one did. No one. She surprised him yet again as she had the day she helped him from being buried alive. This, this was different, it was a new level neither of them had ever reached. Together.

Never had her family (other than her mother) shown this kind of concern, it had seemed lost on a girl like her who was as hard as the waves. He wasn't any softer, but here in some bizarre way they were sharing something akin to tenderness. She didn't mind being close to him and that was a small (very small) comfort. But why? Why for him? It was confusing to the old Ancient Titan.

He kept to his oath though, he did not touch her though some uncertain part of him wanted to. Once again she had become this beautiful thing for him. Monsters didn't get to have such beautiful things.

There was light from outside as the taxi pulled up and Ky wrapped an arm around Briareos' waist to pull him up and get him out into it. She made Briareos give her the address and then repeated it to the driver, piling him into the backseat as she climbed into the front, keeping an eye on him as they drove.

When they pulled up in front of a building she hoped was the address they'd given, Ky paid the driver more than he'd asked. She leaned into the back and pulled him out, once again becoming his support. "Which way?" she asked him as the taxi drove off.

Both of them made the driver nervous. He tapped his fingers against the steering wheel the entire ten to fifteen minutes it took him to get to the destination. He didnt know why the skinny guy was covered in blood but he wasn't going to protest, because something in homegirl's eyes said she would rip him to shreads if he asked.

The apartment was only a few flights up, luckily too late in the night for there to be anyone really out to see. He pointed in the right directions, talking a lot and moving all at once took a lot of energy. He handed her the keys as they came to the door. He wasn't going go through that again when everything inside him was ready to shutdown and reboot.

She held him up with a groan, leading him up the stairs and wondering now why the hell she was even doing this. Perhaps it was because he was a link to Greece, to when she'd been powerful and strong.

Inside his apartment she found his bed, dropping him into it and then sitting down heavily beside him, taking a minute to catch her breath.
