WHO: Emma and Little Kemp
WHAT: Finding out Little is sick
WHEN: Tuesday evening after this
WHERE: Kemp home
WARNINGS: Language

Emma dropped the phone as soon as the conversation was over. It was the testing centre, calling to ask why Little hadn't been attending her post-results counselling for people who had testing positive for Huntington's.

Her little girl.

Little had assured her family the results had been negative, and clearly she hadn't been honest. Emma's heart broke for her. She must be so scared. Keeping her own feelings down for now, Emma rose and went to her daughter's bedroom door where she knocked. "Little? Can I come in?"

When Emma knocked, Little was doing her homework. She felt cheated to be doing homework when she might not be well enough to benefit from the results, but the other option was accepting that she was going to get sick, and she was still trying to deny that. So homework it was.

"Yeah," she said to the closed door, looking up. "Come in."

Emma opened the door, feeling dread and horror twist in her belly. "Little," she said, her voice soft which was bound to give away the fact that she wanted to discuss something serious. "I just received a call from the geneticist who ran your Huntington's tests. She wanted to know why you hadn't been going in for your post-results counselling."

As soon as her mom said her name, Little was worried. At first she thought it was her dad or Thomas but she almost wished that was the case a moment later.

She clamped her mouth shut and looked quickly back down at her books. "I-I have to do my homework," she whispered.

"Liliana," Emma said firmly, though she was careful not to sound too angry, "you told me the results were negative. Why did you feel you needed to do that?"

"They are negative," Little said with a crack in her voice, shifting through the papers in front of her as though that could stop this conversation. "The hospital must be wrong."

"Oh my darling-" Emma went to sit on the edge of Little's bed and she reached out to stroke her youngest daughter's hair. "I know it must be so terrifying." She was definitely terrified.

Little flicked her head to the side after a moment of the touch, making a sound of frustration. "Stop it, it's fine! I don't even care."

It was obvious she did care, but Emma wasn't cruel enough to point that out. "I care," she said instead. "I'm so sorry." She felt so guilty for having children who were doomed to such a fate. She never would have, had she known. "You should be going to the counselling sessions, Little. They can help you work through this."

Little stood up, just to get away from what was suddenly feeling like a very stifling situation. "I don't need to work through anything, okay? God, this is why I didn't tell you, because you'd get all... like this!"

"You signed a contract, Lil," she said, as gently as possible. She made no move to follow Little, however. "I'm just worried about you, but I won't try to force you to talk about it."
