WHO: Maureen and open.
WHAT: Going to the shop.
WHEN: Midday on Dec 10th.
WHERE: The small store on the corner.
It was getting cold enough that Maura could see her breath in the air before her, and she could feel its bite in her bones. She had no desire to be out, but she had run out of cigarettes in the middle of an assignment, and the cat's food was running low.
She burrowed down into her collar against the cold, just as she reached the door of the corner bodega, pushing it open, heralded by the small bell that was attached to the door. Maura headed to the back of the store, first picking up a small red basket. She racked her brain to recall the shopping list she had set herself before leaving the apartment. It was difficult. Her mind had been so vacant lately. So, cigarettes, cat food... milk, perhaps gum. Taking her time, she filled her basket with non-essentials. A bag of crackers she wouldn't eat, some tissues she didn't need. New multi-coloured sponges and dish soap, fancy chocolates and a few packets of instant noodles.
In truth, she was avoiding going home to work, it was a dull assignment and she didn't feel quite up to it. Maybe it was because she had been itching for a cigarette. In any case, she was satisfied to stroll up and down the aisles of the store, listening to the faintly playing sitar music being piped in, basking under the gently flickering fluorescent lights.
