Who: The Red Baron and Veronica
What: Friend of a friend trying to patch things up.
Where: Baron's apartment
When: Sunday night
Warnings: Angry Baron?
There was a pot of tea setting on the stove when the doorbell rang. Conrad poured a drop or two of scotch into a an empty mug before following it with the hot tea. He took his time getting to the door with a heavy sigh.
Moritz lifted his head watching his owner silently and laying his head down once the door opened.
Conrad gave Veronica a half smile letting her inside. In the past few days he'd reverted back to older habits. The side that didn't like keeping things nest and orderly. Nothing was put away neatly, stubble decorated his chin, and his clothes were a simple tank and black jeans. He was still angry but getting back in the habit of being on his own without the fascination of a young girl that believed in him so much that he was still here. There were plenty of others around that the Baron felt belonged here. He however had always just been a man.

Veronica promised she'd try and mend this. How she was going to do she didn't know, but she wanted to try. She felt it was important to at least try.
When she was let in she could tell this affected him and her natural instinct to fuss only reared it's head. Sometimes she felt like such a mother.
She smiled as she walked inside, noting the giant dog. "Jesus I could ride him." Smiling she extended her hand, "hi puppy. Let's not eat me today alright? I'm skinny." She glanced to Conrad, "and you look like shit."

"He's friendly, names Moritz," he said extending his arm as he offered her a seat on the couch that the dog laid stretched out on. "Just tell him to move and he will." He walked back into the kitchen ignoring the compliment. "Would you like some tea?" He was facing an inevitable conversation, one he'd rather not get into. He didn want to see, speak to or speak of Natalie. She had her life and he had his own.

She smiled to the giant dog, scratching his ears before gently coaxing him off the couch, "Bernie should never meet him. He'd want one and Gods knows I couldn't walk something this big. He'd drag me half way across the city." She nodded before sitting down. "So. You know why I'm here, and not to defend Nat. I'm just going to try and get you both to see a middle ground."

"Yes, I know why you're here," he said making his way back into the main room with his tea. He sat in a reclining chair opposite to where she sat.
"What is it you wish to say, Veronica?" his voice while polite held that clipped undertone. Conrad was still at unease over the situation.

She sighed, honestly she was only trying to help. "Look, I'm not going to say what Nat did was right, or it should be excused. It's not right. She fucked up, badly. I know she regrets it though." She sighed, "look Conrad...Manfred. Oh bollocks whatever you go by now, Nat does love you. She just can't deal with the fact you're practically perfect. She's convinced herself she doesn't deserve that so she messed it up. Now you can either continue sulking like the big baby you're doing an admirable job at pretending to be, or you can try and work this out with her. I'm not saying forgive her, but you're doing exactly what she thinks she deserves."

"Natalie will never see herself as something better. I've tried to show her otherwise for years Veronica. I will not continue to put my heart on the line for her," he was angry still of course he was. What stopped Natalie from doing it again. If she knew him at all she knew he could forgive her and he wasn't ready to do that.
He rested his hand against his chin closing his eyes. "I'd marry that girl in a heartbeat and she knows it, but that scares her."

That made her blink, "it would scare me too. Look, Manfred Nat's what maybe a few years older then me? We're in our twenties." She held his eyes with hers, "you're very much not. Look let's just forget Nat's self destructive at times, but do you have any idea how frightening it is to know about you immortal people? To know theres beings out there who are so old you can't even fathom it? It's so, so scary and often I don't know how to deal with it. Neither does Natalie. We make a good show of it, but we are scared. You," she took his hand, "are this being she's worshiped for her entire life. Knowing you are real, knowing you love her, I mean. Jesus Manfred it would terrify me. You'd outlive me. That's so mindboggling it's not even describable."
With a sigh she released him, "that doesn't forgive her. Nat needs help. She needs people to show her she's better then what she thinks she is. Look she's going to spiral, and I'm afraid she might do something silly one of these days. I like Natalie, she's my best friend. I don't want to see her hurt. Just, don't give up."

He kept his gaze to the wall, continuing to shake his head as if they just weren't understanding each other. He was hurt, and could very well have had a sting of tears to his eyes.
"Scares you? How do you think I feel? Wondering around for more than eighty years looking like your self and then not. Holding this in as some big secret that no one but others like you understand. I'm not a god, I'm not some mythological being in which the very thought of immortality makes sense. I've never had something of my own to hold onto. No family. No wife. No children. No one to share a life with because it was over before I turned twenty-seven the first time."
He closed his eyes taking in a deep breath and exhaling. "I'm tired, I'm worn out, inside I'm an old man and I can't change that. Natalie was the first person in years that sparked some interest, that I felt connected to since the moment I met her---and I know now that was because of her fascination with me as the Red Baron. But, I'm not him anymore..."

She groaned, "God, both of you are so frustrating. You're still the Red Baron, nothing changes that. And if you have a spark, keep it going." With a sigh she ran her fingers through her hair, "I swear, easier to get my son to clean up his room then to mother over both of you. And you could be my grandfather."
With a sigh she rose, "theres others like you. I started a club for mortals. Start one of your own. Stop sulking." She gave him a smile, "purely friendly? I like you. You're nice. You're a good influence on my son. At the very least, come have dinner with him and me. You can tell him about the strange things you did and I'll try not to panic when he tells me that now he wants to be a pilot."

Veronica was as persistent as Natalie, and that at times was what the old man needed. "I need time," he told her. He still had a wounded heart, and the Baron was a forgiving person, but right now he needed to hold onto his hurt.
She hadn't mended anything, and he hardly wanted the talk to settle, but the truth of it was that Manfred knew he could forgive Natalie because he loved her that much, and that was a hard pill to swallow when he felt like this.
"I can cook if you like. I suppose being a pilot is better than telling you he wants to rule the sea." He gave her a half smile.

"You cook? Man where are all the guys like you?" Smiling she shook her head, "no. We're still having the 'piracy is illegal now' debate. Doesn't help his father encourages that trend." She sighed, just talking about Poseidon aggravated her.
"I'll cook, you just show up and I'll try to cheer you up a little bit. I have to go now, but look after yourself yeah? Don't make me come down here with a broom."
