Who: Fairytales & Skoll
What: ...There's seriously no telling with these two
When: Thursday evening
Where: The forest outside the city
Skoll had been enjoying the summer so far, apart from the heat. Humans to chase out of his forest, his Sun kept where she couldn't escape again, and Hati, Alpha and the pack to hunt with. The pups were getting old enough to come along on the hunt, and he had no problem with showing them the ropes.
But it was evening now, the pack mostly bedded down for the night, Hati off who knows where. Skoll was pacing the forest in wolf form, looking for a chase, or a hunt, something to keep him busy until he felt tired. He'd found a deer, and was planning to stalk it, maybe bring it down and haul it back to the pack, when he felt another immortal nearby. Not one from home, and not one he knew, but his curiosity was peaked. The deer could wait a few hours. For now, he wanted to know who was in his forest, and why.

Fairytales stood in the forest, bare feet burrowed into the leaf mulch under the trees. She could see the moon shining above her, and she watched its slow progress silently. She felt solemn. Since trying to open up to Charles and failing clumsily to express herself, she'd been introverted, and retreated from the city to try and hide away for a while. She still felt like there was blood under her fingernails. The vorpal sword was hidden.
There were others somewhere. The forest was alive with magic. Not everyone could see it, but she did. Fairies and elves and goblins moved about their business, just out of sight. They didn't have to be obvious to be present. She became aware of the movement of something larger only as he came closer, though. She turned slightly, trying to spot him, waiting for him to make himself known before speaking.

Skoll padded along silently, using the fact that his vision was superior in this form to get a better look. The girl was just standing there watching the sky, and she didn't look like much, but he knew better than to take anything at face value.
Shifting back into human form, he approached her, looking for all the world like a young man out for a stroll. Except they were deep in the forest and it was the middle of night.
He followed her line of sight, and saw the moon, huge and silver in the sky above them. "Where did you go, little Moon?" he asked in his mother tongue. "Hati misses you. Wants to chase his Moon."
He turned to look at the girl. "Who are you?" he asked, not on the alert for a fight, not yet. He would wait and she wait she said, and proceed from there.

She heard his words and didn't understand them, but she felt a tingle down her spine as he stepped to the edges of the shadows. She didn't answer him when he asked her for her name, just observed for a minute. Then she turned half towards him, keeping him securely in view. "Alice," she said, using the name she currently kept as her own. She could tell he wasn't mortal by the feeling, and there was something in the way he stood that wasn't quite human. "And you?" she kept her tone neutral, not giving anything away.

"Skoll," he said, not bothering with an alias, because if anyone ever came looking for him, he'd just shift into wolf form and be far away by the time they got close.
"You're like me," he said, because there was no point, in his mind, in beating around the bush. He sniffed the air. "Not from home, but still like me. Not mortal. Not sure what kind, though."

She nodded slightly. "Goddess. Princess. Pauper. Hunter. Fairy Godmother." She smiled a little. He was direct, so different to herself, used to riddles and rhymes. She was getting that old god sense stronger now. It was almost like a scent of ancient trees and snow. "What do you do?" she asked, planting her feet a little firmer on the ground.

He raised an eyebrow, a faint smile across his face. "Lots of people in one body. Fairy Godmother, huh? Do you know Little Red? Just like the girl from the story."
"I chase the Sun," he answered. "I'm the wolf that chases the sun. Apart from that, I hunt. Guard the pack." He shrugged. He never claimed to be much more than a simple creature, and he'd never apologized for being as such in his very long life.

"Little Red?" This piqued her curiosity, and she cocked her head. "I am Fairy Godmother to my Greta. She is the daughter I will never have. Do you chase your Little Red, Wolf? All the way to grandmother's house?" She wished he could have the smooth comfort of an axe in her hands.

"She asked us," he said, the hint of a growl in his voice. "Asked me, Hati and Alpha who would come chase. And she always comes back." His posture was more rigid now, and whether it came to blows or shouts, he was ready.

Fairytales frowned. Was his Little Red her Greta? Did he chase her goddaughter?
"I don't run, Skoll." She squared her shoulders and narrowed her eyes. "And I guard my pack too. She is ignorant in our ways. You know what happens to the big bad wolf at the end of the story." Her heart beat fast, the Hunter Prince stirring in her depths, though she suppressed it quickly.

"Didn't ask you to," he said, squarely meeting her gaze. "Maybe it would be a fun chase, but I have no quarrel with you. Guard her, if you wish, but ask her. She came because she wanted to."
"Maybe not so ignorant. She knows what we are. And yes. I do. But I've died more times than I can remember. This wolf always comes back. I have a duty to perform."

Fairytales kept her peace over Greta. She would speak to the girl, of course. In the mean time, the Big Bad Wolf was watching her with steel-grey eyes, calm and collected. "She is ignorant of herself. She knows not what she does. I do not wish to fight you, but if you hurt her, I will." She moved a couple of delicate steps towards Skoll, sizing him up. "I have bigger battles to fight than an old god running in old ruts worn deep." She said it in a calm tone, not antagonising or patronising.

"Perhaps," he said. "I do not wish to fight you either. And I would expect nothing less."
He raised an eyebrow and looked down at her, he was taller than her by at least a head. "I'm sure you do," he said, matching her tone. "And this 'old god' is only waiting on the end of all creation, which he will help bring about." He shrugged. "But I don't expect that anytime soon."

"I hope not. There's too much to happen between now and then." Fairytales glanced up at the moon again, then down, and shook her head. "You could do something different while you wait, perhaps. But maybe the old ways are better." She seemed a little troubled by her own words, and looked up again at Skoll. "There are not many the same as us any more."

"Some don't think it will happen at all, but all things have to have an end, eventually. But I'm not hurrying it along."
He shrugged. "I've tried different things. I work doing what I do best, getting rid of bad men. Not as much now, the pack needs me. And maybe they are, but I am old, so maybe I'm biased."
"There are not, but I think that's good," he said after a while. "I don't think the world could take it."

She took a few steps closer, eyes narrowing a little in interest and speculation. "Bad men?" she asked, her tone soft. Perhaps she didn't have to be alone in her suffering. Perhaps she could make these choices without having to resort to the strength of the Hunter to cut her loose. "How do you mean?"

He debated how much to tell her. He got rid of bad men at the order of a man who was probably worse than all of them.
She was now close enough to that if he looked down, he was looking at the top of her head. "I get orders," he said carefully. "I get told what they've done, and I make them go away." He shrugged. "It's a living, I guess."

Fairytales considered his reply for a minute, then nodded slowly. "You're a wolf, you do what needs doing," she said, her thoughts elsewhere for a moment. He could be as ruthless a killer as she, but he seemed to work for another. She killed to protect people. But still, it was nice to know that she wasn't alone in her work. "If I ever needed your help, could I ask for it?"

Skoll considered her words for a moment, then nodded too. "As I have always done." At least she wasn't going after him with an axe, that had to count for something.
He eyed her for a moment, then nodded slowly. "If the pack doesn't need me," he said. "Those men, no one noticed they were gone. I could help you if you needed it."
