Barbecue's usually weren't her thing. They were a very American thing to do, and she liked to think she held onto being British fairly tightly, but today was an American holiday and even she'd known soldiers who had died (even though they were ancestors and had died in wars long past) so it seemed fitting. And she'd wanted a day for her entire family to catch up, and for a casual way to have Anthony meet both her son and sister. She didn't want that to be too formal and awkward.
She knew she'd have to corner her friends and remind them not to bring up the whole 'Gods are real' thing around her sister, but she'd manage. She didn't want Monique to know just yet. Best to find a way to let her sister in gently. Well gentler then Veronica herself had been brought into this crazy world, but that wasn't hard to do. She'd put a note up on her front door so her guests knew to just walk into her back yard, where she was setting up the last of the salads. She'd ask one of the boys to do the actual barbecuing. She figured one of them would be good at it.
Monique was really looking forward to today. A chance to kick back and relax, meet her sister's friends (and her new boyfriend, she reminded herself gleefully, musn't forget that), and have some food and good conversation. She'd been whirling around the house all day, helping out when she could, trying not to get in the way when she couldn't, and just in general being a ball of energy rocketing around.
"Everything looking good, V?" she called out the back door.
Anthony hadn't really known what to bring, so he'd figured chips and soda would hopefully be OK. And if anything else was needed, he could volunteer to run to the store.
He saw the note taped to the front door and walked inside, following the sounds of voices until he reached the backyard. He called out a greeting so they wouldn't think he was just some random person walking in off the street. "Any place in particular I should put these?" he asked, holding them up.
"I'll take them!" Monique chirped, relieving him of the items and setting them on the table. "Hello, and welcome! I'm Monique, Veronica's sister. You must be...Anthony, right?" She held out a hand to shake.
He smiled and shook her hand. "I am indeed Anthony, it's nice to meet you, Monique. How long have you been staying here?"
"A little over a week," she replied. "V's been great, letting me have the guest room and everything, being a proper big sister and looking out for me. She's told me a little about you," she said with a knowing smile, recalling Veronica's comment about wanting to get Anthony into bed. "Only good things, I promise."
Anthony gave a fake groan, and buried his head in his hands, but he was grinning.
The ball of energy her sister wasn't wasn't too much of an issue. She already had her eight year old running around the yard after his dog like it was the last thing he'd ever do. She was suddenly happy she didn't invite Poseidon.
She was grateful for the extra help and nodded at her sister, "Everything's looking fine thanks." When Antohny appeared she couldn't help but smile brighter and brushed her hair into place before motioning to a table, "put them right there."
But her words had come too late because her sister had, already, cornered Anthony and before her sister could embarrass her she moved to him. "Hey there." She set her hands on her sister's shoulders, "I'm here to save you from my snooping sister." She smirked and went to hug him, "Thanks for coming."
She drew back and looked around for her son, "Bernie come here love." When her son stopped before her she ran her fingers through his hair, "love this is Anthony." Her son frowned, then glanced up to Anthony, "oh, is he the guy you're seeing?"
With a blush she nodded to her sons comment, "he is. So be good and say hello." Bernie turned to Anthony with a smile, "hello. I'm Bernie."
OK, so maybe she'd been dashing around like an errant Superball, but today was all about family and friends, and having fun, so she felt slightly justified. She'd tone it down tomorrow. "Great!" she called back.
"Hey!" she exclaimed laughing. "I resent that. But only a little, because it's really sort of true. And you really are as adorable as she said. How are you even a real person?" She wanted to poke him to drive her point home, but refrained.
Anthony couldn't help it, he laughed. "It's because I'm just that awesome." Monique grinned at that. "Good answer. I like him, V."
He smiled and leaned into Veronica's hug. "No problem at all, thanks for inviting me. Are there any others dropping by?"
He looked over as Bernie approached, smiling in what he hoped was a cheerful manner, and not 'I am a creepy man who's dating your mom'. He really needed to tone down the cheer sometimes, his Italian double was always telling him he'd bleed sunshine and sparkles if someone cut him.
"Nice to meet you, Bernie. I'm Anthony," he replied. "I've heard a lot about you."
She had no problems with it, she just wished she shared some of it. She could use some of the errant energy her sister and son seemed to have. She chuckled to her sister's comment to Anthony, "I keep telling him that too. If he bottles it and sells it he'd be a millionaire."
She nodded then, "my cousins Lachlan and Kyle and my friends Joey and Nat. Big crowd. Hopefully. I'm conscripting one of you boys to do the whole actual barbecuing thing. I'm terrible at it."
"Same here," the boy replied. Veronica smiled at her sister then, "could you get them eat Nikkie?" When her sister left she turned to Anthony, "my sister doesn't know. And I want it to remain that way for a bit. Ease her into it." Smiling she set her hand on her son's head then, "Bernie love, Anthony's like your father." When the boy nodded she smiled, "he's a Saint."
The boy frowned up to her then, "are you allowed to date him?" And the question made Veronica laugh, "yes. I am." With a shrug Bernie turned to Anthony, "can you do neat things like my dad?"
Kyle showed up looking more alive than he had in a long time. While Dionysus was gone in dreamland, he'd spent a lot of his time at his girlfriend's place. He'd gottent to know her mother and sister until they felt he was well enough to go back out on his own. With Dionysus out that long the effects had been massive on the young mortal boy.
He was back at the bar with his job, Ariadne was also back and Kyle was working to get back on track with his music. He'd lost his band, but with the right advertisment he was sure to find a new one. It wasn't an easy gig, but it was all about the way things worked.
Seeing the note he followed back to the back yard. As soon as he approached Bernie looked to what Kyle held in his arms. Aside from the bags of chips he had a present for his favorite nephew. "Yo, big guy!" he grinned, "got somethin' for ya." It wasn't a cheap gift either. He knew Bernie's interest in ships, sailing and water had jumped since meeting his father, but he hoped with the guitar he'd dive back into music. There'd been a time Bernie thought he was V's coolest relative. Kyle missed that.
It looked like there were a few faces he didn't know just yet, but Kyle was a socialite. "Nikki!" He said noticing Veronica's baby sister. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen her.
She giggled a little. "Like Eau de Anthony?" she asked. Anthony blushed a bit. "Because that wouldn't be weird or anything," he replied with a little smile.
She was a little surprised at her sister's request, since she hadn't heard them ask for anything specific, but she rallied quickly and nodded. Gathering a few plates, she headed into the kitchen and grabbed a few handfuls of the different kinds of chips. Then she headed to the backyard and got a sampling of each of the salads and a few plastic forks.
While Monique was doing all that, Anthony was nodding at Veronica. "That's a good plan," he replied. "It can be a little overwhelming sometimes, or so I'm told."
He laughed at Bernie's question too and added, "As far as I can tell, there aren't any rules against it." To the second question he replied, "I don't know if you'd call it 'neat', but I can find anything that's been lost, or taken, or misplaced. I guess it's kind of cool," he finished with a smile. "Definitely comes in handy."
"I didn't really know what to get, so here, have a smörgåsbord," Monique said, coming back with a smile. She looked up when she heard the new voice. "Kyle!" she cried, flinging herself at him and pulling him into a tight hug. "God, how long has it been?" She took a step back and surveyed him. "Love the tattoos," she said with a bright smile.
She'd given Anthony a look and a smile, "thanks. And just a tad. I just want to make it easier on her." But then she'd spotted Kyle and his gift. Before she'd managed to say anything, Bernie had been over the moon and she'd be the worst parent for making him give it back. By then he'd lost interest in Anthony and she sighed. "Kyle, that was unnecessary."
She shook her head, managing to tell Kyle not to say anything about the Gods before her sister returned. "Kyle, this is Anthony. Anthony my cousin Kyle." With a smile she kneeled next to her son, looking to the guitar. "Tell your cousin thank you while I go put this away." he took the gift as her son flung himself around Kyle's legs. She'd have a talk with her cousin later. This was too much and her son would get spoiled.
"I'll be back," she needed to calm down her nerves anyway. Snapping at Kyle wouldn't be nice. Instead she just walked into the house, setting the gift aside before going to find more drinks.
Natalie arrived at the house and, after seeing the note on the front door, headed around the back. She spotted Bernie and wolf whistled at her favourite kid (not that there was much competition for him) before spotting Veronica's head through the window and going inside.
"Hello you," Natalie said as she gave her friend a smile. "Looks like a few people here already," she said, kissing Veronica's cheek in greeting and then holding up a brown paper bag. "I brought sweets from Belgium to share."
Bernie had grinned and waved to NAt, but was too busy running between Kyle, his Aunt, and Anthony. There were, after all, all the things to do.
She smiled at Nat and leaned into the kiss, "hey you. And yes. I'll give you the introduction. I'm just here so I don't commit manslaughter." Smiling she went to take the bag, then pointed at the guitar. "Kyle, my cousin, brought that. I don't want Bernie to think people will buy his affection, awful as it sounds. Oh, don't mention the whole Gods thing to my sister, yeah? She'll learn in her own time."
She let out a breath and set a hand on Nat's back to lead her outside. "Alright, introductions." She pointed to her sister, "that's Monique my younger sister. The tattooed fellow is Kyle, my cousin. And the adorable shaped thing is Anthony." She shared a secret smile with Nat, "we're dating. He's also a Saint. Literally. Which we aren't mentioning to my sister, but I'm very much going to Hell for what I want to do to him." With a wink she moved into the yard. "Nikkie, my friend Nat's here.
