Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood: calm
Entry tags:apollo, avery duffield, erato, lyra campbell

WHO: Avery, Apollo, a touch of Lyra and Erato
WHEN: Sat 23rd April
WHERE: Avery’s place then Apollo’s penthouse
WHAT: Apollo needs someone he can rely on to get him coffee
WARNINGS: talk of Erato's torture

Avery smothered a yawn where he was reclining in bed, messing around on his phone instead of getting out of bed. He felt like he’d been getting up early for work every day for a month, and it was just so great to not have to rush out and get a story. He could stay here where it was warm, with one arm around Lyra’s bare shoulders, and not have to go anywhere or do anything.

It was kinda cool being married, honestly. Sometimes, like now, spending time in companionable silence, bodies lying close in the warm and comfort. He was thinking about asking her if she wanted a quickie but at the same time… he really didn’t want to move.

When he got the message from Apollo, he ignored it for a minute, because he didn’t realise what it was for. It took a follow up where the god changed his mind on the size and insisted on something bigger for him to take it seriously. Then he stiffened and half sat up, frowning at his phone. What the fuck? Apollo was asking him to go and fetch coffee? What was he, a personal assistant?

But- but but but- maybe he should go, right? Go and see what Apollo wants coffee fetched specifically by Avery for? Maybe?

Ah, so it seemed like reputation was more Avery’s currency than currency. Apollo’s lips twitched up a little in a smile. “I did, didn’t I?” he asked, without an ounce of humility, although he did raise his coffee cup as well. “I scratched your back and you scratched mine. Makes the world a better place, doesn’t it?”

Avery was glad he had no debts to Apollo hanging over him, all the same. At least, he hoped he didn’t. He did not need an IOU to come back and piss Lyra off. “Sure,” he replied, and took a bite of his pastry. “Reciprocation is important. Getting this job has really pushed me to the next level though, it’s challenging me in a good way. So thank you again, really. I couldn’t’ve…”

Over Apollo’s shoulder, Avery’s eyes caught a flicker as a woman drifted past. For one horrible second his stomach seized up- ghost!- but then he realised that A: it was daytime, and B: that the woman was definitely solid, although where she’d come from he couldn’t have said. Her red hair tumbled loose and tangled down her back, and she wore an ankle-length white nightdress, like something out of a gothic novel. Avery thought he could hear very low singing, although it was very plaintive and unsettling. She went to the sliding doors that lead onto the balcony, her hand trailing delicately along the glass as she stepped out. Avery’s words were stolen from him as he watched her, a wistfulness and longing coming over him that was hard to explain. She just seemed so sad, even as the wind caught at the ends of her hair and tugged at her skirt, and she stepped towards the railing.

“Who is-” Avery said vaguely, half raising a hand to gesture towards her.

The vision was twisting and changing again, Avery’s voice was clear but behind it were overlapping and indistinct conversations, urgent, weary, confident voices and the tapping of multiple newsroom keyboards, he missed the addition of Erato’s voice until it was joined by the near-silent roll of the sliding door. He was slamming his coffee down on the table and shoving the heels of his hands into the sofa to launch himself to his feet, crossing the wide, open space to reach Erato before Avery could finish his question.

“Hey there, lovely one,” he said softly, stepping out onto the balcony at her side. He saw her fall, saw her weeping, saw her pressed in passion against the railing, saw her standing like a pale wisp of a woman before him, saw all of them and more as he reached tenderly to pick up her hand.

She did not startle when he touched her, only turned her head to him, pale eyes looking lost. Perhaps she didn’t remember what she’d come out here to do, only that she’d wanted to feel the wind whip around her. Was that Musagetes, here to protect her once more? His voice, certainly, giving her some warmth. She sighed, curling cold fingers around his warm hand, and the tune she’d been humming became words instead.

“I am not sorry for my soul
That it must go unsatisfied,
For it can live a thousand times,
Eternity is deep and wide.

I am not sorry for my soul,
But oh, my body that must go
Back to a little drift of dust
Without the joy it longed to know.”

Inside, Avery watched, completely at a loss as to whether he should go or not. This woman was clearly troubled, and it put a whole new angle on his view of Apollo and how he treated those around him.

As Erato sang, every other vision vying for Apollo’s attention started to fade away, till there was only this Erato, this shadow of her former self. He closed his fingers around hers, his other hand reaching up to brush her windswept hair from her pale face, letting her finish her song before he tried to guide her back inside. “Listen to me, I will bring joy back to you,” he swore to her, his voice tender. “You will know it again, believe me, I will not let you turn to dust. Come inside now, and eat a chocolate croissant.”

Locking the door to the balcony, he thought to himself, was not a foolish idea.

Avery watched silently, forgetting his own pastry as Apollo came back in and closed the door behind him. The woman walked as if her feet pained her, hanging onto Apollo’s arm, not acknowledging there was anyone else in the room. Her eyes were weirdly pale too. She meekly took the pastry she was offered, and delicately tore a corner of it off to nibble on.

Quickly, Avery looked away, realising he was staring and feeling terribly awkward about it. Looking down at his own pastry, he felt his appetite deserting him, his mind buzzing with curiosity over this whole situation.

Apollo kept one of his hands covering hers, where she held onto his arm, and when she let go to tear at her food he kept his hand on the small of her back, instead. He didn’t try to guide her to sit, didn’t want to distract her from eating when she needed food so badly.

He glanced over at Avery, who’d dropped his eyes. Perhaps a gesture of respect, perhaps not. “This is my guest, Avery. Do you remember Lyra’s husband?” he asked Erato when she finished her tiny nibble, curious about what memories she had access to. It had been difficult to judge, of late. “Avery, this is my sister, Erato.”

He kept his eyes on Erato, though, watching to see how she’d take the appearance of a young, mortal stranger.

Of course Avery had heard the name. Hadn’t Lyra talked about her? Something about meeting her through a window halfway up a skyscraper? This woman was very not looking like the sort of person who would wave through a window at someone she’d seen on Instagram. But he’d done his research too, he knew who the Muses were even if he hadn’t met one before. This was the muse of romantic poetry?

“Hi,” he said, and waved a hand. She lifted her eyes to look at him, and it was hard to tell how interested she was. “Uhm, your singing was very nice.”

“It is the lark that sings so out of tune. Straining harsh discords and unpleasing sharps.”

“Oh.” Her speaking voice was lovely too, if a bit husky, even if he didn’t really know what she meant. Avery glanced at Apollo again, wondering if he knew. He probably did, he seemed to know about everything in his domain.

Apollo stroked his hand down the ends of Erato’s hair, over the curve of her back, a tender gesture before he shifted around the island of marble and gold to his fridge. His eyes felt like they were starting to calm down, at least, and there was only one version of his hand reaching out in front of him to open the fridge and find her something to drink from its contents, choosing a bottle of rose lemonade he’d ordered for her specially. “Take this with your croissant, Erato,” he said, placing a cool glass in her hand and curling her fingers around it in encouragement. “Let’s not allow that throat of yours to dry out.”

Though the huskiness, he suspected, was more a product of prolonged screaming than it was of anything else.

“Too much of water hast thou, poor Ophelia, And therefore I forbid my tears,” Erato said, taking the glass. After a moment, she wandered away again, going to fold down onto the floor in front of the glass doors and let the sunlight fall over her as she nibbled and sipped, her back half turned to them.

Avery knew he shouldn’t stare, but it was hard not to. She captured attention by her beauty and her strangeness. “Is she staying with you?” he asked politely of Apollo, hoping that he would explain what was going on.

Apollo watched her for a long moment before returning to sit, this time in a seat that faced the windows so he could keep a watch over her. “Yes,” he said, reaching across the coffee table to take his drink again, with just the slightest grunt of effort. “Do you know her story?” he asked, because the Rosario-Lyra-Avery gossip chain was very short, and Rosario very much knew what had happened to Erato so the chance Avery knew it all too, he assumed, was high. However, the look that crossed Avery’s face suggested that chain was broken somewhere. Hmm, interesting. “She was taken,” he explained, to save the boy confessing his ignorance. “I won’t speak her captor’s name in her hearing, but she was taken and very badly hurt. I healed her.” He looked straight at Avery with a grave expression, wanting him to understand the seriousness of all that had passed and how mother-fucking epic Apollo’s part had been in it. “I regrew her eyes from nothing. Hence, I need a very strong coffee.”

He didn’t mind admitting a little weakness, here, because all that admission did was highlight just how powerful he could be. Avery had seen displays of his power before, of course, but not to the extent of regrowing eyes, and Apollo wanted to make sure Avery remembered – and wondered at – the kind of thing he could do.

Taken? Honest to the gods kidnapped? Outside of alien encounters, it was not an area Avery had any knowledge in. But hearing that Apollo had regrown eyes was… Well he’d seen him heal a broken arm. It was that but so much more unnerving. Plus, knowing that someone had actually hurt another person to the extent of that sort of violent disfiguring made Avery get a sour taste in his mouth.

He swallowed hard, looking at Apollo anew. Fucking hell. Eyeballs were what intelligent design proponents were always banging on about, saying they were too perfect for evolution to create. Well now he had proof that a god definitely made eyes.

“Shit. I’m sorry,” he said, because he couldn’t think of anything else, and felt he had to say something. “That’s awful. You really did that?”

“I did,” said Apollo, and with a hefty and meaningful look, met Avery’s gaze straight on. “I would do all that, and more, for anyone under my protection.”

It was a weighty promise, but what sort of god was he if he couldn’t promise protection (and health, wealth, sight, and like, fucking everything?) to those who believed in him? It was a clear fact in Apollo’s mind that for the vast majority of his history, with only a few (justified!) exceptions, he made people’s lives unquestionably better, it simply was.

Was that him? Was that Avery? The significant look and the "under my protection"? He sat up a little straighter, focused on Apollo now, occasionally glancing at Erato where she hummed softly to herself and dabbed up crumbs from her skirt.

"That is generous," Avery said respectfully, feeling a bit buzzy. "I- I want you to know that I don't share certain peoples'... reservations. I want to see the honest truth."

Yes, thought Apollo, it was generous, wasn't it? It was good to be properly appreciated. "Yes, I get that sense about you," he smiled at Avery, not a huge smile, but a pleased one. "Reservations? That's a tactful way to put it." Maddeningly stubborn, that's how Apollo might have put it, although Avery's choice of words was indeed tactful, because there was no way Apollo was going to let anyone badmouth Rosario in his hearing. Interesting, his pause, though. Apollo was starting to guess at where the gossip chain might have fallen apart.

Well, he wanted to be respectful to both Apollo and Lyra. He didn't want to badmouth her BFF behind her back, what kind of man would that make him? (Honest?) "I don't understand all her reasons," he explained, deciding to take the approach of ignorance. It was the safest way. "But I can see you are treating Erato with kindness and love."

Well, that right there was not so impressive; of course he was treating Erato like that? Why wouldn't anybody with eyes be able to see that? Surely even Rosario couldn't put a bitter spin on it, even though that was one of her shining talents. "Of course," said Apollo, glancing over at Erato again, who seemed to have settled a little into her patch of sunny warmth. Just how much bad press was he getting from Rosario, exactly? After everything he was doing for her? "Why would I treat her with anything less?"

"Of course you would," Avery said hastily, because Apollo looked like he was getting a bit of an edge and he didn't want to be the cause of ill will. "She is important to you, of course." He was starting to feel a little uncomfortable, feeling like what he was seeing was not meant for his eyes. Rosario and Lyra by extension were both so fixated on Apollo manipulating for his own ends, but he'd looked genuinely concerned so far as Avery could see.

Apollo narrowed his eyes at Avery just a fraction, but that's because the world was shifting again, and there were several Averys suddenly all moving at once and he needed to blink, hard, to squash them all back into one. Behind him a chorus of different Erato voices began to murmur, and as he turned his head toward her one of them screamed, though the sound seemed to come from somewhere far off, so he was fairly sure it wasn't happening now.

Fairly, but not completely. There were perhaps too many futures and pasts in the room and some of them were vicious.

He forced himself to focus on Avery, the present Avery. He'd witnessed Apollo, and his talents, and his power— it helped. Apollo meant it when he smiled. "You're a shrewd one," he told Avery. "Why don't you take an extra pastry for the road?"

That sounded like an invitation slash opportunity to leave. Avery smiled politely and nodded, loathe to refuse the offered hospitality. "Thank you," he said, rising to his feet. "I'm honoured that you thought of me to help you today. And I hope she gets well soon." He nodded towards Erato on the floor, her face turned towards the window.

"But love, first learned in a lady’s eyes,
Lives not alone immured in the brain,
But, with the motion of all elements,
Courses as swift as thought in every power,
And gives to every power a double power,
Above their functions and their offices."

Erato glanced back over her shoulder and met Avery's eyes, and for a moment his heart raced so that he felt breathless, sure and disconcerted that she was talking directly to him. She looked neither happy nor sad, but her look was knowing, and then she turned away again as if she'd forgotten he was even there. What the fuck was that? He shut his mouth and swallowed, taking a second before exhaling and looking back to Apollo to incline his head towards him.

"She will get well," Apollo said, squinting against the ongoing headache, but not so much that it disfigured him. He'd watched Erato as she spoke, and watched her as she engaged with Avery in a way that she hadn't engaged with anyone since her rescue, as though she saw things clearly for a moment.

Only a moment, though.

As Erato's voice faded and she turned away, Apollo let the silence hang for a moment before adding "and soon is relative." Then he turned to face Avery, as Avery inclined his head toward Apollo, and Apollo's hauled himself up to clap his hand on Avery's shoulder. "I knew I made the right choice, calling you. Don't be afraid to do the same, if you need a pick me up. Now get outta here, truth seeker, and enjoy your weekend with your wife," he said with a smile, and a wink to see him off.
