"Oh yeah, right," Jason smiled sheepishly, his breath short and still reluctant to move. Reason won out, however, and Jason found himself letting go to stand from the wheelchair. "That would be a good idea."
Swallowing in a dry throat, Dan averted his eyes, making his way to the door over the sound of the doorbell being pressed again. He was sincerely hoping it was some new neighbor trying to be nice. Or maybe government goons. He'd fucked up. Now would be a good time to take him away. But when he pulled the door open, a familiar face greeted him from the much more illuminated corridor.
"Gil. Hi."
"Hey man, I was wondering if I could borrow-oh." Gil stepped into the man's darkened condo and immediately noted that he wasn't alone. "And to bring the ones I loaned back...is this a good time?"
What do you think, Dan thought, trying hard not to glare because it wasn't Gil's fault. "Good as any. Gil, Jason. Jason, Gil," he introduced quickly.
"Hi," Jason offered with a half-hearted wave, his gaze fixed more toward the floor than the man standing at the door. He had no real reason to look or feel embarrassed by the interruption, but it was inevitable. "We're just watching movies."
"Uh-huh." Gil set the dvd cases in his hand on top of the pile next to the entertainment center. There wasn't anything playing on the screen for either man to watch and in the dim light both men looked more than a little flustered. Nonetheless, Gil strode over to the young man to offer his hand to shake. "Nice to meet you, Jason."
"Gil is a neighbor. And friend." Who visits at the worst times. "Jason's a friend of mine. One of the few people who read my blog and don't want to kill me after. Or do. Depends, we haven't gotten to that part yet." He talked to cover his nerves, the unease that mounted at the thought of having been caught doing something inappropriate.
Jason looked up to shake the man's hand, and then looked up more since Dan was apparently friends with a giant. "Nice to meet you." Though part of him wished that the man could have chose a different time to stop by, he was at least polite enough to keep that thought to himself.
"I can't stay long, took Dan up on his advice to actually live a little." Gil grinned, starting to make the conclusion that the other man was taking his own advice. Walking over to Dan, he squeezed his shoulder. "So you have another friend who can tell your bark isn't as bad as your bite. Good going."
He didn't wink, but the amusement was impossible to conceal from his voice.
"Yeah..." Dan trailed off, making a point not to meet his eyes. He valued his neck unbroken "Go live a little." Funny how that was fast becoming synonymous for get lost. He missed neither the amusement in Gil's voice, nor Jason's unease. He'd well and truly fucked this up. "Although... it's okay. Jason was just leaving anyway."
Jason had not made any indication that he planning on leaving, but apparently his welcome had worn out sometime between kissing Dan and Gil's arrival. The implied dismissal stung, but he tried not to show it. "I was...yeah, it's getting late."
"Come on you guys, primetime isn't even over." Gil complained, rolling his eyes and going to the DVD stack to grab what he came over for. "Jason, my man, the first thing you're going to have to get used to his pissy fits if you plan to keep visiting him." To Dan, he held up a DVD box. "I'm taking this one. I wouldn't run him off yet, I can't keep company tonight. Got a date."
