(Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Working 44 hours kind of killed me briefly.)
Monday was the day for the clinic visit and the day she'd get her test results back. Granted, Gwen knew the results. How dare he even think she-- But he had to be careful, she understood that. He didn't know her, didn't know her business practices. Of course he'd want to be sure she wasn't going to give him anything more than possibly a child. Hmph. He probably wouldn't even appreciate the years of practice she'd bring.
The young woman looked to the side at hearing the humming and put on her sunglasses to hide rolling her eyes. Too happy. Probably either not paired yet, convinced she wouldn't be touched... or deluding herself that she was in love with whomever she'd been paired with. Okay, there were some legitimately happy people, Gwen would admit, those that had beaten the lottery, but... Shit. She felt useless.
The Queen of Spades talked a good game, only slightly unsure, unafraid of anything. But Gwen? Truly? Gwendolyn Wright as she was? Was not the Queen. She had a family, friends, a husband who was decent to her. The Queen would risk everything at the drop of a hat... Gwen had too much to lose. So she was stuck in limbo, talking big on an anonymous virtual space but keeping her head down in places where she might be able to truly make a difference.
Still, irritating as the sound was, Gwen told herself, it wasn't worth saying anything about. She leaned back against the bench's back, shutting her eyes behind the shades. The girl would keep walking, and her humming would go with her.
