"Both," she said, leaning against him as he wrapped his arm around her. She blushed when he kissed her cheek, then turned and stood on her toes, kissing his in return. "All right."
So she did go upstairs, and changed into her nightgown. It was light cotton, and a lavender color with a floral pattern that she thought suited her nicely. She was a little bit nervous, and so busied herself brushing her hair, then wandered over to the window to look out at the view. She could see the city lights, certainly, but stars twinkled in the sky as well. Her old apartment had been further in the city and so it was difficult to see the stars at night. She smiled and leaned her hands on the window sill, taking in the view as she let her mind wander.
This house was perfect, the view was perfect, and there was even a lovely yard in the back with green grass and plenty of room for children to play... She couldn't have been happier with the house, and she couldn't have been happier with her new husband. Had things been different, she would have hoped to have dated John for a long while before even considering marriage. Rose would have been his child biologically, they would have planned for her, or maybe she would have been a wonderful surprise... But instead, she had given birth to a child with a possibly life-threatening condition, according to the government's orders, fathered by a man she barely knew and certainly didn't love.
And yet, John had taken her anyway. He had been there before her marriage, and he had been there after the divorce and remained her friend through her pregnancy, and was there when Rose was born and in the hospital. He accepted the both of them with open arms, despite what a mess it all was... She was sure that what she felt for him would be love in time, if it wasn't now, and she knew she could trust him with her life and Rose's. Circumstances be damned - The world wasn't perfect, and her life up to this point hadn't been the idyllic fairytale picture she'd dreamt of as a child, but God, they were happy, and that was almost a fairytale in itself these days. She felt with all her heart how truly blessed they were.
