John talked to Carstairs and pulled up the labwork and CAT scan on the nearest computer screen and talked to him a moment about it. He glanced at his watch as he hung up. Three more hours until his shift was over. He was bone-tired, and rubbed his eyes. One of the nurses--Kelly?--offered to get him a cup of coffee, but his stomach roiled unhappily at the thought.
He got up again and went back to the isolation unit. Nana still held Rose, her dark head bent close over her. John watched a moment, then thumbed the intercom.
"Nana, if you'd like for me to walk you back to your room, I can. If you're ready to go, that is. If not, feel free to stay as long as you'd like. I'm sure they won't mind."
