Sunday, May 10th Who: Nana Kimigawa, John Kuo What: A visit When: Late Monday evening, 9pm Where: Nana's hospital room Rating: PG-13 Status: COMPLETE
The hospital had switched to the half-light of late evening, leaving everything softer, shadowed, calmer. John walked down the hallway, feet silent on the tiles, the hem of his long white lab coat fluttering. The evening shift had started winding down, and voices were hushed. John nodded at the nurses working at the nurse's station, then went into the kitchen.
Cassie stuck in her head. "Want me to make a fresh pot of coffee, Dr. Kuo?"
"No thanks. I've had enough coffee for a while, I think. I'm just after some juice."
"Okay, yell if you need anything." She grinned cheekily. "You're pretty good at that," she said, and disappeared before he could say anything else.
The corner of John's mouth quirked up. He seldom found it necessary to raise his voice; simply looking as if he would was sufficient. With a little shake of his head, he got a couple of containers of apple juice out of the fridge and left.
Nana's room was down at the end of the corridor. The door was partially open, and he leaned around it to peer in. If she was sleeping, he'd stop by tomorrow. But the tv was on, murmuring softly, and Nana, wrapped in a soft-looking, pretty robe, sat in one of the straight-back armchairs. She looked tired--he expected that--but awake.
John pushed open the door and padded in. He stopped at the foot of the bed, and smiled when she looked up. "Hello, Nana," he said quietly.
