Jeb pushed the video camera into Dee's hands before he turned the car sharply onto the main road. Their word was worthless as far as the media was concerned. But he wasn't about to stop to make sure justice could be served. As their car gained speed, the curbside restaurant they passed by met the same fate as the houses on the lake. "God, get me out of here alive."
He prayed. After fifteen years of caring less about the ritual and superstition, he found himself seeing askance from something that he no longer believed in. But there were burning trees and only one road to get to the main highway. The progress was already made difficult by the debris and smoke, the last thing they needed was to find themselves trapped in the ensuing wildfire with the rest of whomever was already up there.
