Even though she considered it an exercise in futility, Elaine Boyer remembered to lock the apartment door before she left. They could still get in any time they pleased, and they always remembered to lock the door back up. She'd have to do a thorough search tonight, make sure she found any bugs they put in her room or Krista's, check the main areas too.
Elaine left the apartment around two, and it was now almost three. Krista had the car, but Elaine didn't mind walking. It was easier to tell when someone was following you if you were walking, after all, and Elaine knew one of them was following. He was very good at it, she admitted. He never managed to let her see him. She was too used to it, though, and she knew he was there. He wanted to catch her, wanted to grab her. She didn't know where he would take her if he caught her, but she knew it would be dangerous. Elaine had done everything in her power to evade him- circling, doubling back, taking other routes. She didn't know where she was, but he was still following her!
The addresses of places needing help were useless to her now. She wondered if any of them were real. After all, they were very smart. They knew she needed a job. Those listings had probably been written to draw her out so they could take her.
Elaine nearly screamed when a man in a business suit brushed by her. In her world, anyone in a business suit worked for the government and everyone who worked for the government was watching her, waiting to send her away. Was that the man who'd been following her? It probably was. He was going ahead of her to throw her off. He'd duck into a building and turn around, following her again. She took a few steps backward, body trembling now.
She had to get back to her apartment... but she didn't know which way was which anymore. She was lost, alone, and a sitting duck for them to grab her. The thoughts made her quiver even more, and she backed up further, pressing her back against the nearest building, looking every which way she could. Most people, giving her strange looks or a wider berth as they passed, were content to continue on their way, oftentimes speeding up to get away from her sooner.
