Noah sat on the back of one of the two pickup trucks' back gate, long legs swinging idly. The leaves of an oak-leaf hydrangea brushed against the nape of his neck, tickling, and he moved slightly out of the way. Seattle reLeaf had provided them with a good number of many different kinds of trees--gingkos, sourwoods, beeches, birches, smaller maples, hawthornes and pears. Somehow they'd gotten hold of a variety of shrubs as well--beautyberry, summersweet, oak-leaf hydrangea, butterfly bush, kerria japonica, blue mist shrub, mophead hydrangea, hardy fuschia. All these filled almost to overflowing, the back of the truck in which he sat. The trees and shrubs would work together to form the bones of the park; perennials could be added later. McAllister was a small park in a less-than-savory area of town, reclaimed from a burned-out warehouse. It had been bought by the city, bulldozed and plowed and topsoil replaced and enriched with humus. Noah approved; everyone, no matter where they lived or how they lived, needed a bit of green, a bit of soil, a bit of free space.
A copy of the plans were in Noah's pocket. There would be sod laid, curving paths made and covered with cedar-bark chips, benches to sit on. All that though, waited on the big plantings they'd do today, and the mulching.
Noah glanced at his watch. Almost nine-thirty. He had a crew of ten scheduled, and eight were there, clumped together in smaller groups, talking and laughing, relaxed and cheerful. Most he knew from activities with reLeaf or other environmental groups, but there were a couple of faces he didn't know, and he'd made an effort to talk with them, pull them in, make them feel a part of the group, even if they'd only be together for the day.
Well, close enough to time to start. He stood up on the pickup bed and whistled loudly through his teeth to get their attention. He wanted to laugh when they perked up and turned to him, like a bunch of pups.
"Good morning! Welcome to Seattle reLeaf's project for McAllister park. I'm Noah Browning, your crew boss, but you can call me Lord and Master of All He Surveys. Or Lord Noah, for short."
