"Now, don't get me wrong," he said quickly. "I'm all for this pairing thing. I love the idea. I just don't think the Adjustment Centers are necessary. I'm sure if the government made the pairing process optional, there would still be plenty of people signed up. But if you think about it, isn't the government kind of wasting its money on the Adjustment Centers? Why bother trying to force people into doing something they don't want to do, when that money could be used to help the new families the cooperative ones have been making? If I get paired to a lady that hates the idea and would rather be locked up for five months for not cooperating, what good does that do anyone? That's all I'm really saying, I guess."
