"What's not to believe?" he asked. "Those stories are all probably true. But if you stay out of trouble, you've got a less than one percent chance of being directly affected by police brutality. Half the time those cops are being brutal it's because they're being resisted. I'm not condoning their behavior, because it's still wrong to just keep hitting the person when they're down or cuffed." He glanced over at her.
"I'm not kidding when I say some of those druggies can never quit. Sometimes the only treatment they get is to be put on another drug, one that's medically prescribed--but they're still dependent on it. If you've got a student who fails every paper, even with their best efforts--sometimes you just can't help them. Sometimes they just have to change majors, or yeah, drop out." He looked away again then, before adding, "The subway station isn't much farther."
