She hated the way she sounded, hated it more than anything especially when she was out of the South. Down there, it wasn’t so noticeable but the farther North she came the worse it sounded.
She jumped slightly when he said that to her obviously closer than what he was originally just an involuntary flinch of her shoulders and a quick hitch in her breathing but it was still there. She turned slowly and carefully to avoid hitting him in the face not knowing how close he actually was.
“Thanks,” she said and meant it. “Yours ain’t too bad yaself.” She grinned involuntarily as it may be but it was still a grin. She paid the server behind the counter for her coffee before taking it and stepping out of line. She walked over to the table to add sugar to the already sweet mixture. No one could ever say she didn’t have a sweet tooth.
