The evening took a distinct downward turn from that point. May obviously didn't feel like talking; though she was pleasant enough, her mind was clearly no longer on the getting acquainted part of the conversation. A pity, as it had started out fairly well before tracking off into mutual misunderstanding. Maybe the next time they met, it would be better, he thought with an inward sigh.
Making his excuses to end the evening, he called for the check, and wondered if May felt as relieved as he did. It was far from over, but they'd have a little bit of time to regroup before starting the process of trying to decide what to do with their lives. It wasn't going to be simple for either of them.
