Nana settled in the waiting room, fiddling a bit with the knitting she'd brought along with her. She knew that the wait might be long, and she was right - There was a room full of people waiting to receive their injections. She was too nervous to knit, though, and was only occasionally making a stitch in the lavendar yarn. It felt sort of strange to be at the hospital on her day off.
Arms crossed lightly over his chest, Andrew stretched back into his seat. He had no idea this was going to take so long. He had already stood and paced the room at least three times. Andrew had never been good at sitting down. Looking over at Nana, he wished he'd brought something to do as well. Maybe he should take up knitting. He smiled at the thought. They'd probably look silly if they were both sitting there knitting. What a pair that would look like! Andrew ran a hand through his hair and looked around at the bored faces. Almost everyone else there had also been waiting a long time. Andrew had lost track of exactly how long they'd been there. "Do you know how long these things usually take?" He leaned over and asked Nana.
"The actual appointment should be quick, a few minutes at most." Nana looked up at him, setting the knitting down on her lap. "Hopefully we'll be called in soon. It looks like maybe they were a little backed up..." They probably picked a bad day to come. She glanced back down at her knitting. It was a baby blanket. She wasn't sure when they'd need it, and it was kind of a frightening thought...
Who was she kidding?! It was terrifying! She'd seen the kind of things that went on in the delivery room. The happy faces and loving families did stir a bit of longing in her heart, but there were so many things... So many variables, so many chances for something to go wrong - And even after the baby was born, as their child grew up. Was she qualified? Was she capable of looking after person who'd need her completely?
Andrew nodded to her response. That made sense. And today was probably a lot of people's day off, except for the people giving the shots. Andrew shifted uncomfortably. There was something unsettling about getting that stuff shot into his body. It meant so many strange things that Andrew had never dealt with before. They were going to have a kid! Somehow, he had only thought of the marriage part before this moment. It had been all about his partner, but that wasn't all it was going to be. No, there would be another person in the mixture soon enough- possibly more than one! He didn't know how to think of that. Andrew couldn't place whether he was excited at the thought of being a dad, or scared out of his mind.
"Do you want to have dinner tonight?" Andrew asked, straightening in his seat. They were going to have to get really intimate soon. He would be a complete jerk if he didn't at least take her out for a nice dinner. He'd actually been planning on doing something of that nature for a few days, and he thought it might help settle some of the nerves he was feeling, and ones surely she was too.
Nana was surprised, but gave him a warm smile. "Sure. That sounds nice." She was becoming more comfortable with him, but it still seemed so... Weird! She felt like she barely knew him in some ways, but they were quickly becoming more and more familiar with one another. "Where would you like to go?" She pulled her bag into her lap and gently stowed her knitting away. Hopefully they'd be called in soon.
Andrew couldn't help but smile back at her. He could tell he was starting to grow a little fond of her. She was too cute to dislike though, and it would be strange if he still regarded her as a stranger. "Well, if you like surprises then you can wait and see, but if you don't then I can tell you now." He grinned good naturedly at the thought of her getting upset by surprises. She didn't seem like the type who would throw a fit, but he didn't want her to be uncomfortable. Some girls hated to not know what a guy was doing. Andrew thought that took the romance out of everything, but it was about making the girl happy. Nana was more important than just some girl though. She was his wife, as strange as that sounded to him, and he wanted her to be happy.
"I don't mind surprises," Nana said, giggling just a little. It was a nice idea, to have a surprise. She opened her moth to speak again, but stood up when their names were called. Ah! Finally! She picked her bag up, then gave him a smile and gestured towards the room. "That's us."
Andrew had honestly stopped listening for their names when he started talking, and was a little surprised when Nana suddenly stood up. He quickly pushed away his startled face and smiled back at her as he stood. "It's about time," he said, a little relieved that they were about to get this over with, Then they could go back to getting to know each other and "“ Andrew tried not to think about what they were expected to do after this. It only brought up uncertainty and nervousness. He'd been with women before, but never someone he was married to that he'd only known for a couple of weeks.
Walking through the doors, Andrew followed the directions of whom he decided was a nurse, like Nana. He wondered if she was involved in giving these shots to people when she worked. He walked into the room indicated and looked toward Nana. He could feel the light butterflies in his stomach. Hopefully this was going to be very quick and totally painless.
Nana recognized this girl and had worked with her a few times before, and so gave her a wave and a cheerful smile, even if she was kind of scared of this. She took a seat in the room, and the nurse followed all the usual procedures. Nana had never given this particular shot before, but she'd done a lot of other things. The nurse picked her first, and cleaned the spot on her arm before pressing the little gun to her skin. Nana didn't even wince, but she felt a billion butterflies explode in her stomach when it was over. That was that. She was fertile now, provided everything went all right, and she might even be pregnant soon. It was... Scary? Exciting? She didn't know. Mostly scary, but...
Andrew watched as Nana received the serum. He was mildly shocked that there wasn't some kind of obvious sign. The nurse gave her the shot, moved the gun away and looked at him. It almost seemed like there should have been some physical evidence of how it worked. Nana had taken it like it was nothing. Andrew admired her. He thought there were probably a lot of people who freaked out, especially if they were afraid of shots. Andrew himself wasn't really afraid, just nervous. He tried not to let it show at all though. He was a guy, and it was just a shot. It was nothing. It would be over in a minute. Andrew smiled and sat down when the nurse motioned for him to do so. He watched as she wiped his arm and then pressed a shot for him against it. There was just a hint of anything happening, like the prick of a thorn. And it was over. Andrew smiled a little nervously, wondering what kind of effect it was having inside his body as he stood and nodded politely to the nurse while they made their way out.
"That was pretty painless," he commented. Immensely happy that it was over, Andrew quickly moved to hold the door leading out open for Nana. He looked back at all the people waiting. Yeah, he was glad to be getting out of there.
Nana nodded. "Uh huh! It's barely anything. I've given worse shots," she said, making sure she had all of her things. She nodded when he opened the door for her and gave him a smile. "Thank you." It was really nice of him. Andrew... He was so polite, and kind. She had been afraid that he would be terrible, but she knew now that her fears were unfounded. He was sure to be a good husband, and a good father. The only thing she really worried about was her own abilities. Would she be a good mother?
She glanced at him, then blushed and looked down. But now they'd have to sleep together, wouldn't they? Gil had been her first, and she'd known him for a long time and they had been close. She'd really only just met Andrew...!
Andrew nodded at her words. Yeah, he could imagine some shots really sucked. Anything not in the arms was probably not fun. Andrew wasn't really sure what was going to happen next. He didn't really want to bring up sex, but he didn't know if Nana would be comfortable bringing it up herself. If they didn't do it, then they'd be breaking the law. He decided to hold his tongue for the moment. Maybe things would happen naturally and he wouldn't have to worry about an awkward conversation.
"So, did you want to head home or is there anything you need to pick up?" Andrew asked as they walked. It was just so strange to be suddenly living with someone else. He was now thinking in new ways. He couldn't just get whatever he needed to make it to the next day. He was living with a girl, and he had started thinking about what she might need. The only woman he'd officially lived with was his mother, although he'd had a girlfriend who came close to living with him. It was different this time though.
"I did some grocery shopping yesterday," she said, hugging her bag close. She wasn't sure how to make her blush go away. It was such a strange thought! "So I think we'll be good, unless there's anything you need." It was strange modifying her shopping lists for two people, but she'd get used to it. "We can go home if you like. I ought to take a shower before we go out..."
"Oh, great. Thanks." It was strange having someone else around to do the shopping. He'd been taking care of himself for the past couple of years. Now, Nana had gone and bought them both food. It was nice. Andrew had never really liked being alone. Now he had someone to do the little things with. "I'll need to get ready too, so we can head back. There's nothing I really need to get."
"All right." Nana gave him a warm smile, then headed home with him in comfortable silence. She was warming up to him, and he was a nice guy. She could see herself happy with him... She headed home alongside him in comfortable silence, slowly mulling over everything that was ahead of them.
