Daniel had gone through two more tabs by the time he received an alert for the animal rights board and he went back to check it with genuine curiosity. He didn't see many arguments or much debate in general among like-minded people. He wasn't sure that was a good thing - progress needed all kinds of dialog.
Having read through the reply below his own, he typed up a response: I'm not arguing in favor of being Human-centric. We aren't saving giraffes out of the goodness of our hearts. This is an exploitative measure to satisfy our fears and curiosities about what procreation and the so-called miracle of life are all about. If our interest was scientific, we'd recognize and focus on procreation across the spectrum. That is to say, reptiles, marine mammals, insects, birds of prey, etc. Mammals which do not fit the mold of 'cute and furry' have been consistently omitted by zoos from their pens ever since the fertility crisis struck. Not because they are less worthy of being saved but because zoos have become avenues for profit and the profit is in giving the plebes what the plebes desire.
Daniel pressed send without re-reading, reaching a hand for the remote to tune up the stereo. He was in the mood for something dramatic. Maybe Wagner.
