Dear Georgi,

Presumptuous as it might be, I took the liberty of looking around for a couple of places for lodging and have enclosed the flyers from them. I should have asked if you wanted forest or water or what not, but it's a start!

The Owl House - just about dead-center of the country, typical village atmosphere, heavily Muggle though
Braeburn Bothy -- right outside of Banchory near the Cairngorms, not too far north of Montrose, heavily wizarding
Leannan Boathouse -- this is in Dundee, which is halfway between Edinburgh and Montrose, mostly Muggle

It really was a pleasure meeting you today and I do hope that my family put you at ease - at least more than you anticipated. I look forward to when our paths may cross again.

With Utmost Regard,
Ernie Macmillan

[In Georgi's clearest, most careful script, on extremely fine paper b/c guess what guys, his mum is a paper heiress, he has the best magical stationery there is.]

Dear Ernie,

Thank you very much for your owl and the information about places. You are very kind to help me. I am sending owls to these homes tomorrow and find out when I will visit. I think I would be happy to live at any one.

I was also happy to meet you and see your project. I am thinking very much about it since then and I have many questions. I know you are busy with your work, but if you are wanting to leave your shed sometime, maybe we can walk together and talk again.

I am hoping it will be soon that we meet again.

Respectfully, I am
your friend,
Георги Н. Драганов
(Georgi N. Draganov. This is how my name is wrote in Bulgarian.)

Dear Georgi,

I keep having to fight off the urge to add an e to the end of your name - typical British spelling. I have to say I haven't much experience with the Cyrillic alphabet, but I think it's safe to say that it's commendable that you can switch between the two so well. I've got a couple of languages at my disposal but I can't write in any of them (sorry, none of them are Bulgarian).

I don't sleep very much, so whatever time you've available I can arrange my schedule quite easily.

I laughed at the sheep -- that's well done!

With Utmost Respect,
Ernie

Dear Ernie,

I have told my team they can also call me George if this is more easy to say. You can if you are wanting, is no problem. At home my team also calls me Zayo as short name.

Don't be too impressed with my writing; every young wizard from Cyrillic countries who will go to Durmstrang is learning to read and write Roman letters early. There, of course, all schoolwork is in German. I promise my German is very much better than my English. I am also speaking Russian, of course, and some words in other languages. What languages do you know?

I am free all the time that is not training or matches. Maybe Friday after training I can come to visit you? I am wanting to see your shed and ask you many questions.

Regards from your friend,
Георги

Dear Georgi,

Yes, I remember. Zayo = bunny. I'd draw one but I am terrible at that sort of thing. But no, I'm not going to call you George - it was just a top-of-the-mind commentary.

French, Portuguese (don't tell Gabi, I'm always embarrassed to try and speak it with native speakers, my accent is atrocious), Swahili, Tamil are the main ones -- I spent a lot of my childhood in rainforests. Alas, no German or Russian.

That would be very nice. Just walk over when you can.

Cheers,
Ernie

Dear Ernie,

You're right, they call me Bunny. It's a joke about my ears, that they are too big.

I am impressed you speak so many languages! I know a few words in French, although not enough to speak in sentences, and the little girls are teaching me some Portuguese words as well. My accent also is very bad, but Mrs. McGonagall is kind about it.

Why did you spend your childhood in rainforests, can I ask?

I will come to you after training on Friday. I look forward to seeing you again.

Your friend,
Георги

Dear Георги,

Hopefully your owl is liking the airing out - mine thinks its Christmas.

All the better to hear, eh?

My father does research on magical plants and bugs in rainforests. Usually my parents travel together, but my mother has been staying here since the War concluded. But I spent my childhood traveling around with them and it's far easier to pick up languages as a kid. I used to write to penpals (using a stenoquill because spelling) to try and keep it up.

I'll see you then.

Cheers,
Ernie

Dear Ernie,

You are learning Cyrillic! Very good. I think it's more beautiful than Roman letters. In Cyrillic, your name is Ерни. I think we will not put on the last 'е'.

I don't have my own owl in this country and am borrowing her from McGonagalls, but I think she is happy to go out. My familiar is salamander, named Dragomir. I think you'll laugh at me, but salamander is a good familiar. Like me, he doesn't like loud noises or too many people. He is quiet and handsome and we are friends.

I think that was a very interesting childhood. And it was useful, since it gave you so many languages and friends around the world. Do you still like to travel like your father?

До скоро (say like 'do skoro', see you soon),

Dear Георги,

Let's not get carried away -- I can draw well enough to approximate your letters! My name looks like Effin instead of Ernie!

Do you also spit fire?

I like to travel, but I am not struck by wanderlust. Do you know what that is? When you always want to be somewhere new? I don't have that coursing through me and really... I don't know. Home - Scotland/Britain - appeals to me. I am really just a homebody at the end of the day, I guess.

Cheers,
Ernie

Dear Ernie,

Writing is just copying shapes, yes? If you are ever wanting to learn Cyrillic letters I will write them for you with the sounds.

I have never spitted fire. Yet! Maybe one day Drago will teach me his trick.

Yes, Wanderlust is old fashion German word. Today people are not using it so much; instead they are saying Fernweh. It means an ache for far places, like your heart is hurting if you can't travel far away. German is wonderful for words like this that are not easy to say in other languages. Do you know the word Sehnsucht? There is not one simple translation in English, but it is my favorite word. It is very huge longing and desire deep in your heart, that can be for a person or a place he loves and misses... or for chocolate. You can't see me now, Ernie, but I am laughing. Language is wonderful. And so is chocolate. I hope you think so too.

Your friend,
Георги

Dear Георги,

I love these - thank you! Has she made you the Pão yet?

That is, in fact, a wonderful word. Sen-such? Is that how you pronounce it? Hopefully you aren't feeling that too deeply for Bulgaria now. You'll have to try and write out the sounds best you can and don't judge me too sharply on pronunciation.

Cheers,
Ernie

Dear Ernie,

Pão is cheese bread! Yes! I am having to be very careful here how much I eat. I like this food too much.

You pronounce like zeyn-zoocht. Not hard z like in German but soft z like in English. And ch like in your Scottish loch. Then, it is a very pretty word.

I was missing my home when I came here, but I like it in Scotland. I am still missing my best friend and my cousin, but I am seeing them in not so long. It's okay.

Георги

Dear Георги,

That just means you like Brazilian food too much.

It does sound lovely - I'll have to try it out and you can tell me how well I've got it. Are you going home for Christmas?

[Sent after a tellingly long pause; Georgi has written and discarded several versions of this letter before he settles on on:]

Dear Ernie,

I am staying here in Scotland for Christmas. My family understand that I am spending much time training and I will not come home. Coach McGonagall and his family are very kind and invite me to stay with them at Christmas.

Do you watch the Magpie matches? Will you be there on Saturday when we are playing?

Dear Георги,

I guess that makes sense -- you've only just moved here, anyway. I'm surprised they're not wanting to take advantage of your new home to come visit!

Oh yes, of course I will.

Dear Ernie,

I am moving here very quickly and my parents are busy. It is not such a good time for them to come here. But I am hoping my favorite cousins will come to visit at New Year and I will introduce them all my teammates and friends here.

I'm glad. Magpies are very good, I think you will have fun watching.

Dear Ernie,

Yes, I think so.

This owl is not so happy to fly again, so I will let her rest. Thank you for writing with me. I think it helps very much with my English. And thank you again for the papers about renting houses. I will tell you if one of them is the place I choose.

Until I see you again, I remain
your friend,
Георги
