Wimbourne Wasps thrashed by Pride of Portree

by Charlotte Brand
With multiple centuries under their belt it's no surprise that Pride of Portree soared to victory over Wimbourne Wasps at Bodmin Moor on Friday, with Wasps Seeker Solomon Fofona catching the snitch for a 630 to 230 loss for his team.

Prides Beater, and Captain, Lorna MacFarlane seemed determined to protect her Chasers, and kept on the tail of the Wasps Beaters. In particular there seemed to be something of a mexican standoff between MacFarlane and Wasps Dawn Withey with neither Beater letting the other out of her sight. When Prides Chaser Scrimgeour was injured, by a Bludger sent by Withey, MacFarlane responded in kind, and being warned for Blurting, when she sent Withey into her teammates.

Even though he was hanging back and supporting his fellow Chasers, Buchanan seemed to want to let loose this match. Though it seemed Buchanan's luck wasn't to last when, in the middle of another - and previously successful - low altitude play, he was hit by a bludger in the back of his left thigh. Anyone familiar with his career will recall Buchanan had suffered an injury to his left knee in the past. No surprise then that this sparked sparked talk on whether the move was more intentional than it seemed. Despite the serious injury the Pride Chaser somehow managed to not only still hit a double century but also got himself safely to ground.

The real star of the match, however, was Pride Chaser Sara Scrimgeour who like her fellow Pride Chasers seemed to be on the quaffle no matter what the Wasps tried! Though the Wasps tried to mount a defense it didn't stop the Pride Chasers from spending most of their time at the Wasps end of the pitch catching on the rebound and scoring point after point. However, it seemed even Scrimgeour wasn't exempt from getting hit today.

Having been skimming the edges of the stadium a timely Bludger from Wasps Beater Withey sent Scrimgeour hurtling into and along the stadium walls. Yet the tiny powerhouse didn't appear to let it get to her, and she managed to push off the walls and catch the Wasps Keeper unawares with a powerful shot that knocked their broom aside!

Later with Buchanan downed the Pride Chasers could be forgiven for not performing as well as they'd done at the start. But no. Willison and Scrimgeour kept it together, and rather than giving the Wasps a chance to make up some points they went on the offensive not willing to give the Wasps even an inch. If Scrimgeour's performance in this match is anything to go by you can bet you'll be in for a treat when it comes to the rest of the season and beyond.

Nearer to the end of the match Scrimgeour nearly comes to a halt when she turns to rescue her recently injured Captain. Having suffered a Bludger blow to the chest, MacFarlane fell from her broom and would've hit the pitch if it hadn't been for the very timely intervention of her Coach, and sister, Elspeth MacFusty, who sped onto the pitch and stopped MacFarlane from hitting the ground before escorting her to the medic tent.

Although the Pride end of the pitch didn't see nearly as much action as the Wasps end, Pride Keeper McCormack was on point with the Wasps Chasers only managing to score 80 points amongst themselves, and McCormack seeming to delight in her teammates performance at the other end of the pitch. Both teams' Seekers were in hot pursuit of the Snitch with Fofona coming out ahead after Parkinson was blagged by Wasps Keeper Frisby and prevented from catching the Snitch. Perhaps just as well for the Wasps in what was still but could've otherwise been an even worse thrashing of a match for them.

With this being both teams' last match before Christmas they've got a wait ahead of them until the season comes back in the new year. The Pride have a longer wait with their next match being the last of the next bloc. However, given the injuries some of the players received today the waiting will be something of a blessing; whereas for others, and indeed the injured, it'll be a slow agonising wait until they're back in action on 20 January.
