Montrose Listening Party
WHO: Montrose! Players and Staff (+ Gabi)
WHAT: Listening Party IC/OOC! Let's have fun and listen to a bunch of foreign quid
WHEN: Nov 2. (Sands is slow), afternoon and evening
WHERE: Montrose Team Rooms
WARNINGS: Cameos of the enemy. Other than that none.

It's a short practice today team! MG has arranged that they spend the afternoon and evening with snacks and entertaining quidditch to listen to. They’ll take a break in between the matches for slightly heavier food and a new round of drinks but MG asks them all to pay attention to the matches as much as they can.

He’s picked these out from the 98/99 season abroad. Mainly because he thinks they’ll be particularly important to learn from and there are lessons to take away from how other leagues play, he's purposefully picked the standout matches that show the peak of the talents he wants them to listen for. Please talk and comment openly during the matches, there will be a board up that he’ll be using to write notes the team gives during.

Match 1:
Quiberon Quaffles vs. Grenoble Goblins
(550 -160)
~2.5h long

[Note: The announcing and commentary is by a british foreign sports correspondent, with occasional explanation of the difference in french quidditch rules and styles sprinkled throughout]

From the onset it's clearly a high scoring match, between two teams that aren't that far apart in the standings at this point in the regular season. But from the outset one chaser's name gets mentioned over an over again, a french intonation to what everyone in the room knows is a very Scottish name.

"Buchanan again! Slips yet another by the keeper and the defending chaser, what will slow this scot down?!"

As the match gets more intense, and every member of the opposing team bears down to stop the Scot that Could, penalties begin racking up left and right but nothing stops him. In fact Quiberon passes off every penalty shot they get to Buchanan, both for his cool head and skill at confusing the keeper and the fact that it riles up their opponents more.

When the snitch is finally caught, the commentators are half stunned by the stats. 250 points to Buchanan alone. He's outscored the snitch, he's outscored their opponents, and he's outscored the whole rest of his team for a new league record for the season.

"Well, for any sort back home listening, I think this Scot is going to have a firm place in the French League for a while yet. Especially after a showing like this."

Match 2:
Third Place Match
Warrumbungle Bunyips vs. Daintree Danger
(470-240)
~2h long

[Note: This recording is of a famous Aussie announcing duo, well known and loved in Australia for their banter and their uncanny ability their mouths have at keeping up with the chaser hands. Covers the Third Place Match of the 98/99 Season]

It takes all of three minutes to show just how different Australian Rules Quidditch can be. The quaffle never seems to stay with anyone long, and it changes hands and teams so many times it gets hard to keep track. It’s fast, it’s furious, and it’s physical.

In the first hour there’s so many potential fouls that any self respecting british referee would’ve called that it’s easy to start believing it’s impossible to foul in the Aussie game! Even the announcers are worked hard, rattling off the chaser names for every pass with such rapidfire determination that they don’t breath for minutes at a time. Half their cheering for each goal seems to be just as much about catching a breath and celebrating.

"Willison-Sheppard-Bennett-Cook-Sheppard tipped-Rae-Cook again and Willie has snatched it back right by the hoops! Terrible angle but she’s gonna give it a burl and OH WHO WOULD’VE THOUGHT! CURVED RIGHT UNDER THE BRISTLES!"

If anyone listening thought this chaser battle would slow down as the match wore on, they were mistaken. Interception after interception, shot after shot, the poor stat takers have their work cut out for them.

But there’s a clear chaser standout in the midst of all the chaos, and Willison’s name pops up again and again. Shock interceptions, shots from the oddest angles, appearing where everyone least expects, not to mention taking and handing out fouls (as the british would call them, no aussie referee does) as good as she gets...when the snitch gets caught just after the second hour it doesn’t even matter.

300 shots taken on hoops this match, countless interceptions, and more passes than any sane wizard or witch would dare count. But the Bunyips have handily won and finished their season on a high.

Best in the Air (BITA): Joy Willison

Well it’s no surprise Portree snapped her up.

"Alright team, I thought we deserved a little fun and we haven't had a listening party since the Portree one after our mock match.

So I've picked two matches played last season from foreign leagues. Neither are particularly long but I want you all to pay attention to particular players and their style and strengths. I brought you the best matches rather than anything run of the mill, and it never hurts to try and learn from the playing styles of other leagues.

Now, snacks are around, drink in moderation, and well...it's quidditch. Let's have fun with it!"

Just as a note, every quarter hour or so during the matches, Florrie will get up and stretch without speaking (so she doesn't interrupt the conversation) and encourage everyone else to do the same.

From the announcement of the playing teams, it's pretty obvious who this one is going to be about.

Comments on the french style, on Buchanan, what you take away from it, are you more pumped to beat him? Do you have any questions? Notes you want the coach to write up on their brainstorming board?

[And since this is all very casual, you can approach him at any time for questions (related to this or not). Merc has obviously already listened to these. ]

Jason remembers listening to this match last year. As he was coming back form play, he took delight in following Alasdair's career abroad. The man was a monster.

"That man is nothing but untapped potential and can certainly keep his head."

"Not to brag, but I may have had a hand in helping him become the player he is today, although I suppose the opposite is true too."

Merc laughs a little and smiles fondly. "Brag away Jason, when we win the papers can say the student hasn't surpassed the master. But the times I've seen him rattled are when Willison was ejected and he nearly took two bludgers and had to be taken off the pitch. Guess we need to make a big splash to trow him off."

Lennox is very, very quiet this whole time. He does pipe up once or twice, though, more as observations for others to feed off than as suggestions for plays.

"Quiberon relied on him far too much. Dangerous. Shut him down and what do Portree have? Willison is fantastic but more erratic, and Scrimgeour lacks experience."

Kal pipes up to agree with Lennox and adds, "Buchanan can play it cool, but I don't think that would be the case for Willison and Scrim" —she catches herself and barely refrains from using her old roommates nickname, to avoid sounding too chummy— "Scrimgeour if we concentrate on keeping them from passing to him, rather than on Buchanan himself."

...Let's just order takeout. Preferences?

Also a time to discuss amongst yourselves and ask coach questions. Maybe strategize about Buchanan over takeout before we start the next match.

Merc would like them to discuss defense strategies. While he does think they can mark each chaser one on one (Jason, Buchanan is yours if so). He's leaning towards something more zone-like with just assigning each one to keep an eye on an opposing chaser rather than mark them.

They've seen the little one boxed in very successfully, the australian can be shut down or at least limited in a similar fashion, and Buchanan might need a good bludger or two (at once even if possible) in addition to it.

Mostly he thinks trying to mark one on one for a chaser set like this is a lot more effort for less return. And they need to spend most of their energy against McCormack.

(He says they'll talk more about that aussie soon)

Match Two
[info]avoidretrograde
2017-11-04 06:33 am UTC (link)
From the first match, the theme has been set. It shouldn't be a shock what the next match is when it starts.

Even if the Aussie style is significantly different. It's chaser and offensive heavy with little room to breath or slow down and non-stop excitement. (MG personally likes this style, the unpredictability and daring excitement is what he lives for)

Thoughts on Aussie Rules Quidditch, Willison's penchant for the oddest shot angles, and what to do about this style in one woman on the opposing team?

Re: Match Two

"Even if she's not taught it to them, playing alongside her is influence enough. They'll be hard to throw off with fast or on the nose plays. But she's foul prone and if you've noticed, this style involved a lot of interceptions. Part of that is seizing the moment but much of it is they play so quickly that they sacrifice precision for speed.

So when it comes to grabbing back possession, it's her passes the chasers need to target though she's a tough one to keep up with. Angus? You're our flashy flier, what do you think of keeping up with this style?

And Micah. This match was more for you than anything, keep an eye on her. Half her points seem to come from unexpected angles and showing up where the keeper isn't looking at that moment."

Again, Lennox makes few interjections, and they're from the Seeker POV.

"Fast Chaser play like that is a Seeker's dream. Distracts everyone else's attention from where the Seeker is and what they're doing. Might not be Portree's goal, but it'll be a side effect they'd like."

Kal speaks up to appreciate Willison's approach, and particularly the odd angles, but she wonders if the foreign play style will come naturally to the others. Her style seems very different from what they heard of Buchanan in the first match, and incongruity in the position could work in Montrose's favour. Even if they've been practicing it, the error potential should still be higher.

Debriefing/End
[info]avoidretrograde
2017-11-04 06:39 am UTC (link)
"I think the theme of this evening was obvious enough. I know Elsie, I have seen most of her team play in old seasons, as have many of you, but their chaser lineup is all new. For all their mismatch, if I was their coach I'd consider it a good start to that experiment.

Other teams have failed because they didn't know what they were going up against, they weren't prepared for that mish-mash of style and unpredictability. This is so we know what to expect. Their imports are on the upward trajectory in their careers, if not nearing their peak, and these two matches are the most recent best showing they've done.

We're going to train and play like we are facing them each at the level you just listened to. Portree's strenght has been in their quaffle game, we're going to take that away from them."
