DECISION DELAYED: BIL COMMISSION DEFERS MOTION ON 97-98 SEASON, PLANS PUBLIC HEARINGS
By: Margaret Urquhart
A much-discussed motion to quash the results of the 1997-1998 season was proposed and deferred for at least three months at the quarterly meeting of the British and Irish Quidditch League on Monday. Rumours of the proposal filled the commissioners' meeting with spectators, drawing the largest crowd since the decision to reopen the league and hold tryouts over this summer. Speculation about the nature of the proposal and its implications had been rife since the Prophet broke the story earlier this month.
District Six Commissioner Siobhan Kavanagh offered the proposal, which was seconded by District One Commissioner Saxon Lethbridge. Before the Commission could take it up for discussion, District Four Commissioner Fraser Macmillan spoke up to suggest the motion be tabled until the next quarterly meeting so that BIL could have a full analysis of the legal implications and liability. The motion to defer was unanimously carried.
In addition to the legal issues, the Commission plans public hearings, led by Macmillan, to ascertain public opinion on the matter. While there have been some comments by players and a brief from the Department of Magical Games and Sport, the owners and QUABBLE, the players' union, have all been silent to date. Further statements are expected in the near term following on this meeting.
