Who: Kenna McLeod & David Urquhart. What: David shows Kenna his huge library. When: Saturday, January 27th. Where: The library in Urquhart Castle. Warnings: N/A.
“Some of these are first editions!” Kenna said with an actual small squeal as she looked down the length of the library ladder at David. Yes, she knew the library in Urquhart castle was big, but right now that felt like an understatement. She was sure it would take her years just to read the titles on the spines of every book located in the vast bibliotheca. “Just one of these books is worth more than everything in my flat.”
David smiled up at her from behind the stack of books he was holding for Kenna that she’d already decided she wanted to read. “My family’s been in publishing for a long time,” he reminded her.
She shook her head, which caused her hair to bounce just a little thanks to some extra hair potions. “They couldn’t have published all of these books. They obviously collected a few along the way too.”
“Well, yes,” he admitted, just a touch sheepish. “It’s not much of a secret the Urquharts like books.” Gazing back up at the shelves, David jerked his head to the left. “There’s another one up there I think you’ll like, if you can grab it.”
“I think I have enough books for now,” Kenna answered as she looked down at the pile in David’s hands. Smiling, she shimmied down the ladder to the ground. “You’ll just have to invite me back so I can get it another time.”
He shifted the books to his one hand, and held out the other for Kenna to take to steady herself. “You’re welcome any time.” If the stack of books in his arms was any indication, they were going to need a repeat visit.
She snorted. “I’m sure you would eventually get sick of having me here day in and day out, David.”
David remained unphased. “Would I really spend as much time with you as I do if I were sick of you?”
“My great sense of humor?” Kenna asked as she placed a hand on her hip. “Impeccable sense of style? Great hair?”
“Yes, you’re very funny.” He gestured over to the couch. “Shall we?”
Kenna smiled and moved to skip ahead of him in the direction of the couch. “You know, I thought I had a fairly large book collection,” she said as she flopped down on the ornate-looking piece of furniture. “I suppose compared to most people it is, but compared to yours it’s downright pathetic.”
David gave Kenna a reproachful look as he gingerly set the books on the end table within arm’s reach. “Not pathetic. Young, maybe. Growing, certainly. But not pathetic.” He settled in on the seat next to her, shaking out a blanket to cover the two of them. The library got a bit draughty at times, being in a castle and all.
He looked over at Kenna to make sure she was comfortable, staring at her intently. A few seconds too long. “So. Um. What are you reading first?”
“I don’t know,” she answered as she glanced between the books and David. “They all sound so interesting! Someone should really invent a potion
that somehow allows you to read multiple books at once. Would save -- ”
David didn’t give Kenna a chance to finish, instead leaning forward to cut her off by pressing his lips to hers. His heart was racing when he pulled back, and he was breathing heavy. “I just. I’ve been really wanting to do that.” He murmured, unable to take his eyes off of her, waiting for a reaction.
The kiss surprised her and by the time Kenna had collected herself enough, David had pulled away from her. Blinking a few times, she stared at him as he spoke before a smile formed on her lips. “You should have done it sooner.”
“Should I have?” He scooted closer and pulled Kenna onto his lap. “Like a lot sooner?” continued David, reaching to push her hair back behind her ears. “Nessie usually prefers when I don’t use her as a come-on.”
The magical moment was broken by the sound of Kenna snorting at his comment. “Well then,” she said as a hand was placed lightly on the side of his face. “Guess we better not tell her then.”
David smirked. “Don’t want to make her jealous or anything, I’m sure.”
“Are we just going to sit here and banter?” Kenna asked asked she smiled once again. “Or are you going to kiss me again?”
“I don’t know, I kind of like the bantering…” he replied, dragging his hands up her sides. “But there’ll be time for that later.” There were better things to use his mouth for, after all.
“Plenty of time later,” Kenna said as she leaned in and pressed her lips against his, fully intent on making this kiss last longer than the first.
