To the Editor of the Daily Prophet,

I write following the letter of my esteemed countryman William Wallace Wood regarding the upcoming Scottish referendum. His sentiments are well-thought but the gentleman has failed to consider some of the history that has led us to this point. We in Scotland have a long history of working together with wizards from other parts of Britain: Hogwarts, one of the oldest of our institutions, was founded by wizards and witches from all across the Isles. We can and will always work together with our British and Irish fellows.

But sadly the Ministry, especially in recent years, has been unable to reciprocate with equal generosity. Alas for us all, it's not simply ancient history like setting prisoners off our coast to an island that surely should have been sunk to the bottom of the sea. More recently, through the late war, we've seen the Ministry fail all our citizens in so many ways. Scotland wasn't the worst harmed, nor the least, but she bears some of the many scars of that war.

Now we're building a better nation, as the Minister says. But let us be wise about it, and let us also hear voices that have not been heard so often in the past. London and the Home Counties have dominated our Ministry for many years, so yes, let us have an office for Scotland--and for Ireland and for Wales as well. Let us learn from the traditions outside the south of England. And I daresay let us learn from our Muggle neighbours and their kin who have joined us in the wizarding world as well: their voices have been less heard until now than anyone's.

Think less of division and more of listening to your fellow citizens. We can only build a better nation if we can all speak and be heard

Aye, it will cost a few galleons, and there will be change and upheaval, and it'll be uncomfortable for a time until we build that better nation. But our future is worth that cost. And so I urge all Scots to vote AYE on 15 January.
