Florrie,

I meant to give you this sooner but this holiday got away from me. I hope you'll also accept my sincerest apologies for what happened at the Macmillan party. I feel terrible that it happened and that you were hurt on my account. I know I can't say anything that will erase it or make it better.

I care about you and I've enjoyed getting to know you, but I think it would be best if we remain friends. I can understand if you'd rather not, so in that case I hope we can at least remain on friendly terms.

Dear Cav,

Thank you so much for the lovely earrings. I'll wear them and remember our time together with joy. I too had something for you for the holidays and I hope you'll accept it in the spirit of affection and friendship.

I understand that sometimes things don't work out as we might have hoped, but I'm glad we can still remain friends. And don't even think of what happened at the Macmillan party; it was naught to do with you. Elsie and I will work it out.

Happy new year to you, and I hope to see you at the friendly match in January, if not before.
