Who: David Urquhart and Kenna McLeod
What: David has no idea how makeup works.
When: After this conversation.
Where: The nearest Superdrug.
Warnings: None.

“Do you think Sunkissed Rose or Wild Summer Tangerine would look better on me?” Kenna asked as she held up the two small brush containers next to her cheeks. She didn’t actually care about David’s opinion on shades of blush, nor did she think he actually knew enough about blush to offer a valid opinion. In reality, she was asking him the question to distract him from the Muggle woman that was getting closer to the cosmetics display in the hopes he wouldn’t become more nervous. “I’m not so sure I can pull off the more peachy look when it comes to blush.”

“I don’t know what either of those things mean,” David confessed, turning his back to face her instead of that Muggle woman by the counter. Of course, he wasn’t so sheltered that he’d never seen a Muggle before, but the occasions had been few and far in-between, and while it was utterly nerve-wracking, David couldn’t deny he was somewhat curious, too. “Are there different shades of - what is it? Blush? Don’t you blush naturally, anyway?”

Kenna sighed. “The names don’t really mean anything. They just want them to sound nice.” Sometimes the names reflected the actual color of the product, but other times they just seemed to be a random words that sounded nice and she couldn’t believe someone actually had a job of naming these things. “There are plenty of different shades. These are different shades. And you can’t blush all the time, so you wear this blush so you look rosy and carefree.”

David’s brow furrowed in lack of comprehension, but then just shook his head, not even trying to understand why blush was necessary or why it had different names. “I like that one,” he pointed to the one against Kenna’s right cheek, not even trying to remember what it was called.

“Hmm. Okay,” she answered as she pulled the pans down so she could look at them again. “Or I could just get both. I can afford to get both and then some these days.”

“Five...whatever that symbol is,” he gestured at the strange sign next to what he assumed was the price. “Isn’t a lot?”

Glancing at the Muggle woman, Kenna leaned in and stood up on her toes. “It’s a pound symbol. Muggle money,” she explained as she teetered slightly. “And it’s not that expensive. Probably a galleon and some change.”

“Right.” He nodded slowly, reaching out instinctively to help steady Kenna by the arm. “So what’s this?” David asked, picking up a clear tube of something that looked pink and shiny on the inside to examine.

“That’s lip gloss,” she explained as she lowered herself back to her flat feet. “It’s usually good on color, but it makes your lips sticky and slippery. And now one really wants that now do they?”

David continued to look confused, but replaced the item on the shelf and attempted to answer Kenna’s question, even though he wasn’t sure if it was hypothetical or not. “Um. No?” He guessed. “Yes? It’s sort of like lipstick, yeah? For dressing up and all that?”

“A bit like lipstick, yes. But your hair gets stuck to it more often than lipstick.” And when one had long hair, it was more than a little inconvenient. “Which I’m sure is an incredibly boring fact to you.”

“It’s not really a problem I have,” he agreed, his lips quirking into a smile.

Kenna rolled her eyes. “You say that now,” she said as she picked up her makeup-filled basket. “Until you have to kiss someone who is wearing lipgloss. Then you’ll understand.”

He looked away at that. “Yeah. Well. I’m sure I will.”
