Letter: Support the Pink in the Pitch
To the Editors of the Daily Prophet,
I'm writing in response to Hamish MacFarlane's letter in the Sunday Prophet, and Sir I respectfully disagree with your opinion.
It is a right to exercise freedom of speech anywhere. To suggest the Quidditch pitch is not a place to protest because it is 'distracting' is ridiculous. You sir might know the records of successful Quidditch players who are Muggleborn, but does the rest of the public? Probably not, and that is the point. They wish to be known and counted with the rest. And the pink movement is just that. It is loud in colour to stand in for a loud voice.
The Quidditch pitch is just one public venue to start the message. Would you say that a Hogwarts student couldn't wear pink with their uniform because it would take away from their studies or from the other students in the classroom? That wearing pink would be a distraction during Wizengamot proceedings? Or a Healer can't do their job while wearing pink?
I don't say this as a muggleborn protester, but as a halfblood who was denied their right to support muggleborns during the war. So I again disagree that teammates, fans or opponents are shortchanged. I support my friends, our opponents and our fans. I hope our fans respect the effort that they are taking, especially those who can relate and wish to support as well. And maybe we'll bring new fans to the pitch who feel that they can be counted among them.
And as for those who still won't take notice and are just there to watch Quidditch... then just watch the match. Pink is just a colour and doesn't stop anyone from scoring or stopping goals, hitting bludgers or catching snitches.
Support the pink.
Alasdair Maddock
