Rhys wasn't like some of the other guys on his team, telling girls he was a star football player in order to get their numbers or something more. Football was simply something that he did and had been doing since he was six years old and he happened to be good at it. He'd learned the hard way that any girl interested in him because of his position on the football team ended up being a dead end. He could have talked endlessly about spectacular plays he'd made, but who wanted to sit around and listen to that? Instead, he was more curious about her. After all, he knew all about himself and the beautiful Melina was still a mystery.
"So you're not from New England?" He'd known she wasn't from Nearside, as he hadn't recognized her from high school, but not used to winter at all? That must be a huge transition to not that cold of weather to freezing for near five months. "What made you come all the way up here? Winters around here take some getting used to from what I've heard, but it gets easier when you've been here for a while. Once you get used to the cold, there's a whole bunch of stuff to do around here, like skiing and snowboarding. There's even some snow mobiles you can rent for the day to go exploring on the mountain."
He was tempted to ask her if she wanted him to take her around sometime, but a girl as pretty as her likely had a boyfriend to show her around Nearside and he didn't really want to know if that was the case. Pretty, nice, and fun girls were always taken and if they weren't, they usually had some serious problems with self-esteem or chronic clinging.
