Madeline fingered the spine of the book she had in her hand. It was a loving caress, the soft pads of her fingers running up and down the uncreased paper. Only new books had this feel, unblemished and secretive, as if it would only open for her and no one else. Of course, soon it would not be perfect. Although Madeline took excellent care of her books, she was also an avid reader. Her books ended up looking well loved within weeks of purchase. Not to mention that if her sister whisked off with it, however rarely that happened, it was likely to be returned dog eared and dimpled.
She was contemplating whether or not she needed a new Bluebook, and if the corrections made to this edition were worth the price. Technically she did not, as the professor said that older editions of the book would suffice. She owned four older versions already. Still, it would be nice to start all over. Nothing quite said starting a new semester like cracking open the covers on a new legal style book. She itched to do it, but the thought of what else she could buy with the money made her waver. If nothing else, the excess stipend money could go to her sister. Melina would find a way to spend it.
With a regretful sigh, she replaced the manual on the shelf. Really, the legal dictionary and the publication of outstanding cases in New York that she had found wedged between a copy of the Kama Sutra and the Tao Te Ching. P&P could be that way, with some books arbitrarily filed according to the whim of the stock clerk. Madeline found it frustrating and yet somewhat endearing. It occasionally made finding books an adventure. A cover caught her eye as she meandered her way to the front. A lurid romance novel featured a woman practically spilling out of her period dress, head turned demurely to the side. Madeline found herself reaching for the book before she even realized it. While she had never read one before, she was intrigued by the lack of the seemingly obligatory man with rippling muscles.
She was reading the blurb on the back of the book, so she did not hear someone walk up behind her.
