Summary: Lino wants to see his family and share the good news of his promotion.
Lino whistled to himself happily as he exited the bus on Solaris Road. Ever since Staas informed him of his promotion, he couldn't keep quiet or help the slight skip in his step as he walked down the street. Lino couldn't remember the last time he had felt this happy and lighthearted, if ever. Ever since he was a child, money had mattered to him, though not in an obsessive way where he thought about it constantly. His thoughts were of a more practical nature: he knew he was poor and money meant food. As he worked, the thought of bills he needed to pay were always in the back of his mind.
Even though he hadn't been home in over twelve years, Lino knew how bad the money situation still was for his family. He wanted his little sister to be able to go to school without worrying about having to get several jobs to pay for tuition and for rent, just as he had done for the rest of his siblings. Now, for the first time since he had left home, he felt hope that everything would be okay. Neena had two more years of school left, then he'd be free of financial obligation, and soon, Mateo would be able to care for Third on his own, then he'd be free of his familial obligations.
The idea was just shocking. He'd always been the responsible one in the family, the one who had to take care of everyone else, even a cousin he hadn't seen in years. One phone call in the middle of the night, and he'd dropped everything to help out his young cousin, as he had been doing ever since. Mateo had become more like his brother than his cousin over the last few years they had lived near each other. There wasn't a day that went by that Lino didn't go see Mateo and Third and it was usually in the morning when Mateo had to be at work.
As cliché as if might sound, Lino really couldn't love Third anymore than if he were his own son. Lino would have done anything for Mateo and Third, as he had already proven to them time and again. Now, with this new promotion, he'd be able to spend more quality time with his family, not just be there physically. He'd even have time for himself, which was an entirely foreign notion, but was necessary.
Of course, the biggest problem now in his life was what to do with his new time off. He never had time to pursue hobbies and on the very first day of his new freedom, he didn't know what to do with himself. After work, he went straight back to his apartment, with a list of things he actually had the time to do now, like clean and do laundry. Well, after two hours, he was done with both and after spending twenty minutes looking for something to keep him busy, he decided he'd had enough. So, he was back on Solaris Road, planning to surprise Mateo with the news of his promotion.
Once at the apartment, Lino opened the door and let himself in, calling out in English, "Honey, I am home!"
