Staas gripped each hand in his tightly as he, Alida, and Theo crossed the street from El Torro over to Past Life. It was a quiet morning still, just past ten, and cars were never in abundance in this quiet little community. Still, there were some, and the kids were bouncing, excited to be having an outing after already having been cooped up in the restaurant for a couple of hours while their father did some paperwork and made sure it opened smoothly.
This was only a break, of course. He'd need to get back and be on hand to act as manager. Hopefully they'd find lots of things to play with at Past Life Antiques, things to keep them occupied happily in the office or in the quieter part of the restaurant while he worked. There were already toys there: Legos and blocks and coloring books and crayons. But new was always better, and much more exciting.
The kids hurried along beside him as he swiftly strode along the crosswalk, and then they--all three of them--started skipping when they hit the sidewalk on the other side. And why not? It was a pleasant day; cold, perhaps, but not overly so. The sun was shining, taking the sting out of it and melting whatever ice may have been on the ground earlier in the morning.
It didn't take them long to reach the cheerfully grey building, and Staas pulled the door open, ushering his kids in first, and following after.
