For the tenth time in the past half an hour or so, Key cursed his own idiocy. It was the day after Valentine's, almost six o'clock, freezing cold, and snowing and where was he? Outside in the park of all places. He couldn't fault himself for his reasons though. For the past couple of weeks or more, he had been doing nothing but working and bumming around in his and Dae's apartment. His and Dae's. A concept he was still getting used to.
He loved being with her, he really did. He loved their apartment and the little routines they were starting to perfect, he even loved the fact that he was getting used to seeing her without makeup but even if he was enjoying being 'domestic' he wasn't a completely different man. Lately he had been having these moment where he would look around the apartment, at his and Dae's things all mixed together, and he would feel the stirrings of panic in the pit of his stomach. One minute he would be perfectly comfortable stretched out on the couch and the next, he was feeling like the walls were closing in on him. He knew himself well enough to know that these feelings weren't completely serious, that he wasn't having any kind of second thoughts about being with Dae, it was just that party and play part of him that still lingered in the back of his mind.
Even though he knew where and why he was feeling that way, it didn't stop the claustrophobia from creeping up on him more and more often so here he was, shin deep in snow with Harley bouncing and pulling him along. He was wearing six layers, probably sticking out like a sore thumb from the shimmering whiteness of the snow in his red park, and sorely missing winter in Texas. Where he had lived, the closest he had come to snow was flurries. Usually he liked Nearside for the snowy winters but today it just felt extra cold.
"I wonder if this is what it's like to freeze your balls off?" He asked Harley, looking down and only getting a wag of the tail in return. Then it happened. He didn't know if the dog had seen a shadow or some kind of small, ice creature but in the next second Harley bolted sideways. Key hadn't been prepared for it and the large dog managed to wrench him right off his feet and the sidewalk, sending him face first into a thick pile of snow. The dog was hopping around his owner, barking and still wagging his tail as Key continued to lay there, too humiliated to move. Eventually the cold got to be too much and he lifted his head to glare at the Akita. "Damn dog."
