I don't use online services- my computer's in need of some sort of update, because it can't handle sites like that without getting laggy or crashing, and music that skips drives me crazy. (Not to mention I'd run risk of losing writing work.)
I stick with winamp- it doesn't eat up much of my processing power, and I can control what I listen to, when and how much, since I'm one of those people who can loop the same song all day and not get driven nuts.
I make up playlists that make me think of some facet of my writing- sometimes it's a song that describes a character's attitude, or history, sometimes it's a song that fits with a specific part of the plot. Last year, I was working on an alternate history story set back during the Nazi era, so I had a lot of German music, and some old Christmas carols, because there were several parts of the story that took place in that part of winter. (The story spanned about twelve years, so lots of Christmases.)
Actually, thinking back, my playlist for last year's NaNo was kinda depressing. :/ I had a lot of melancholy songs.
This year, I'm busting a couple rules, because I'm working on a story I've worked on before, but the whole thing had to be scrapped from its first incarnation and rewritten from scratch, so I figured NaNo would be a good time to get myself working on that. The playlist for the story's getting recycled, with a few more additions (and one deletion, not because it doesn't fit, but because winamp seems to have an obsession with that song to the point that even I was going nuts). So back to a lot of angry and/or emo music.
