Summary: Hades flees his perfect world only to be consumed by Lethe's. Until, of course, Ra happens.
Her sense of time had slowly faded away, no concept of hours or days, nor a presence of mind to even wonder how long she'd been floating undisturbed in the foot of water that had flooded her small apartment. It had started as a trickle two days ago with no obvious source when she curiously investigated, and Lethe wasn't certain when the furniture had disappeared or the lights had gone out, but by that point she had stopped paying attention and had welcomed the water's numbing embrace and hadn't left since.
The usually all-too-loud and ever-present sounds of the city now drowned out by a deafening white noise, all reminders and memories of the existence of an outside world were blocked out as nothingness consumed her. Even if she were capable to think of escape, Lethe wouldn't dare. Everything was comfortably perfect.
--
When Hades had woken up to throaty giggles at his ear, he knew the day wasn't going end to end well. Of course, the realization had come a little groggily. It was hard to think straight with his wife behind him, her slender leg draped over his hip and her frisky hands pulling his shirt up so little kisses could be trailed along his back.
But when it really hit, it hit hard. After a bit of a fiasco (she met his resistance tit for tat), he'd managed to get Persephone to calm down, keep her hands off, and stay in bed. The rest of his house was... the Underworld, which he'd missed but wasn't quite up to managing at this point in time. Fortunately, everyone was as obedient as they had been. Even Lethe, who'd been playing around in his bathtub. (Clothed, by some lucky stroke of nature.)
He was a few minutes late and impossibly grumpy when he finally got out of the house. It didn't take long for him to decide that everyone else was likely experiencing the same thing. Worrying that Lethe might end up forgetting herself in all the chaos, Hades headed to her apartment first. And was met with, unsurprisingly, a river.
"Lethe?" he called out, a bit of his sourness bleeding into the monotony.
--
Face almost completely submerged, Hades' voice didn't register as much as anything but a meaningless echo through the water, but it was enough of an interruption to catch Lethe's attention. She let out a quiet sigh in response, water lightly bubbling from around her lips, her continued need to breathe the only thing breaking the illusion that she was seamlessly joined with the river. Fingers twitching in irritation, not liking that realization at all, Lethe twisted her head and fully dunked herself under in defiance of whoever or whatever had the audacity to disturb her peace.
--
Hades debated calling out again or submerging himself in the water. (After his "wife's" cloying attentions, he probably needed it.) Logic won out.
"Charlotte?" He'd heard a splash earlier, but it was entirely possible Lethe had become the river.
--
Another meaningless ripple of sound broke through the blankness of her thoughts, and Lethe was content to continue ignoring it if there wasn't an annoying tug of familiarity and obligation that she couldn't quite shake. Persistent bastard. Rotating onto her stomach with a gentle splashing of limbs, Lethe lifted her head mere inches above the water surface and peered blearily at Hades through a curtain of dark hair plastered across her face.
"Shh," she hushed, finger pressed to her lips.
--
"You were in my bathtub," he deadpanned. It was a thoughtless act, thoughtless acts being things this annoying, teenage container was prone to.
Still, mind eventually overcame matter. In this state, Hades acknowledged Lethe wasn't likely to be going anywhere. "I take it you will not be coming to class."
--
While recognition of the man, the unexpected intruder, was apparent as Lethe slowly waded her way over to the door as if to greet him or invite him in, what he was saying was still beyond her foggy comprehension. She knew the words, or at least she thought she should have, but her mind couldn't string the meanings together into anything coherent. But it didn't really matter why Hades was there, not now or ever.
She opened her mouth as if to speak, now crouched closely in front of him, but all that escaped was a petulant sigh as she slowly reached for his ankle to pull him in. "No," was her only answer, barely a whisper and uncertain what she was denying.
--
Eying her outstretched hand with some trepidation, Hades meant to step back. But there was something so unutterably peaceful about Lethe's perfect world. Timeless and quiet - the Underworld at its finest, unlike the rowdy mess his own place had become.
It would not be so bad to forget, Hades thought, dropping his bag and stepping forward. To forget everything just for a few moments. An action so uncharacteristic of Hades, yet somehow, in this dark and endless river, so fitting. He'd prepared in advanced for his classes anyway; he'd probably get more out of one-on-one consultation with the professors than out of the lectures he was to miss... The excuses came up, one by one, until he'd quite forgotten why he'd bothered to come in the first place.
--
Greeting his willingness with the slightest upward twitch of her mouth, Lethe's pale fingers clutched at the cuff of Hades' pants, not wanting to give him chance to change his mind. A gentle and encouraging tug at first, Lethe's other hand grasped up higher at his knee, and with a surprising quickness of movement and a splash, she knocked him off balance and into the shallow water below. And out of respect for the god, she broke the force of his fall with her own body.
--
As soon as he'd gotten his bearings, Hades, unaffectionate and monogamous to the bone, rolled off Lethe even if the contact was a result of practicality and hardly untoward. He drifted along beside her, momentarily forgetting who he was and what exactly he was doing.
Slowly becoming one with the river.
--
Ra was undeniably unaccustomed to the reality of Andrus and Charlotte not coming to class. He was also becoming a little bored of being obeyed. The glamour had faded after a little while. However, it was more concerning that Andrus hadn't been there. Of all the people not to show up to class...
He knew that he was a stickler, but his friend had always seemed the same. He'd called first with no response and then checked at Andrus' place with no response and quickly made his way to Charlotte's. He went to knock before noticing the door was partly open. When he pushed it open the rest of the way, he was confused by the sudden river. "There's a river in your apartment," he pointed out, ignoring the obviousness of the statement. "Charlotte?" He wished he'd brought his flashlight. It wasn't until his eyes adjusted that he noticed two bodies floating in the water.
His eyes widened slightly. "Charlotte? Andrus? You better not be dead. Now get out of the river..." Okay...so he needed to get used to not ordering people around.
--
Hades was first to respond to the irritating voice, throwing his weight down into the water to stare sulkily up at the intruder.
One of these days, he and Lethe were going to throw Aaron from a classroom window.
