Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Adrian Pucey & Astoria Greengrass
What: Checkin up on a body
Where: Morgue
When: Sunday evening

Adrian combed a hand through the shelves of his fridge. A heart here, a liver there, he hated when one of the Healers from up there asked to check up on a patient. Especially after he disemboweled the parts for organ donations. After finding the right bags, he plopped them onto the surgical table to be reassembled when the Healer got here. Reassembling wasn’t his favorite thing to do either.

He flipped through the corpse’s papers, scanning the boxes for a name. As he was looking, he came across a familiar one in the attending Healer’s box: Greengrass. It piqued at his memory.

The knock on the Morgue door came almost too soon. Having little time to search his memory, he walked out into the receiving room and turned the door knob.

There was a blonde standing in the doorway.

“Hi,” he began. Adrian was relieved he wasn’t in the middle of an autopsy like the last time he had a visitor.

"Yes." Astoria said. She picked up the copy of his notes and held them over to him to sign. "For verification that these are perfect copies of your notes on file. These will be kept in the permanent file for this case." She hated all the red tape they had to go through, but it was necessary now.

He took the notes from her. After this, she would be gone and who knows when he would have another opportunity to speak with her so easily. If he wanted to get this mystery resolved, he had to do it now.

"So..." he began as he scribbled his signature after spending a long time reading through the notes. How could he start this? Oh! He could mention his sister. What was her name? Donna? Demelza? Daphne? Daphne. It was definitely Daphne. "I was wondering if you had a sister named Daphne?"

Astoria was a little surprised at his question. She looked up at him, her face betraying everything that was going through her mind. Why was it that everyone knew Daphne? She wished that she would be remembered for herself, not for her sister. But he was a little older than she was, that must've been why he knew Daphne.

"Yes. I do." She cocked her head to the side. "Do you know her?"

His mouth almost became a grin. So it was her.

"Adrian," he handed the papers back to her with his signature. "Adrian Pucey. I don't know if you remember me, but our families used to work together."

The light came on. Astoria's face brightened as recognition crossed it. She broke into a grin and reached out to shake his hand after accepting the papers. "Adrian. Wow. It's been such a long time. I don't think I've seen you since..."

Her face fell slightly. There was pain she was hiding deep inside. "Since our fathers used to bring us to the office when I was little."

"Yeah. You've definitely grown up a whole lot." He shook her small hand.

Adrian didn't notice her darkened tone. "He's dead right?" Oops. There goes the social ineptitude.

A tinge of pink crossed over Astoria's cheekbones. She certainly had grown up. She knew it, but it was nice to hear, too. She gave a little nod, giving him an appreciative look. "As have you."

A small intake of breath, and then she spoke. "Yes. When I was nine."

The blush was nice. He appreciated a rush of blood to the face. It made her look alive. So much more alive and vibrant.

He spoke softly. "Right. I remember. We didn't come over anymore like we used to after that. Do you still live there?"

"No. The manor's been sitting empty all this time. My mother's not sure what to do with it. She wants to sell it, but it has so many dear memories. And painful ones, too." Astoria confessed. She hugged the folder with the paperwork in it to her chest again.

"How is your family?"

House elves must be having a ball there, he thought to himself.

"I don't know," Adrian replied almost under his breath. It was true. He hadn't spoken to them in months now. "We stopped talking since I lost my job and started working here instead. I was a lawyer for a while."

Astoria was a little surprised. Apparently she'd been living under a rock if she hadn't heard that Adrian had been disowned. So, maybe it wasn't disowned, maybe just estranged? She was a little confused on top of being surprised.

"I... I'm sorry to hear that?" She said, though she wasn't sure. She could understand the stresses involved with being a lawyer. Both her father and grandfather went through it. "How'd you lose your job?"

"No, it's okay. Really. I hated it anyway," Adrian started to snicker. "I told some old hag that she was going to die. It...it was pretty hilarious in retrospect!"

The snicker erupted force into laughter. "There she was on the witness stand, and it was my turn to say my piece. And I...I just told her! I said, 'why bother pursue the case when the old hag is going to die and leave her money to her flea-ridden cats anyway?' My father didn't think it was too funny though. But screw him!" His laughter got louder, bouncing off the walls.

One of Astoria's eyebrows rose in curiosity and surprise, and then he was laughing. She was shocked at first, but couldn't help but break into a grin. He had a really nice laugh.

"I can't believe it." She shook her head a bit, letting out a soft laugh herself. "I don't know if I'd have been brave enough to speak my mind like that."

His laughter faded into a few remaining chuckles. The grin was still apparent on his face, though. It was nice talking to Astoria. He found himself easy around her, unlike most other people. Adrian wanted to keep talking to her.

"Yeah. But I got fired after that and now I'm here ripping up bodies for a living. I'm surprised I haven't come across hers yet," he shifted his weight on his legs. "How did you end up here? You look like you should be in one of those fashion magazines. In Paris."

Astoria was pleased. She knew she was gorgeous, but it was wonderful to hear. She pretended to be insulted, though. "Who says I'm not?" She asked, pouting. Then she broke into a grin. "I could be a model on the weekends, you know." She was ignoring the 'how'd you get here' question, because they were having a nice conversation, and she didn't want to think about her ailing grandfather.

"Really?" he raised his eyebrows. He wasn't a gullible person but he could very well believe this were true. "How do you have the time to be a Healer then? You must get tired of being so beautiful."

Oh wow. He was being very charming, and Astoria was eating it up. She gave a laugh. "You're too kind, Adrian. I'm not, though... I spend all my weekends in the lab." She wouldn't have time to model, even if she wasn't trying to cure her grandfather. Being a Healer was more than a full time job.

"Oh, that's a shame," Adrian was enjoying this conversation. He hadn't screwed it up yet. He was being the gentleman that he always fantasized that he would be, just like in the movies.

"Where do you work? I can't believe I've been here for over a year and I still haven't run into you."

"Third floor." Astoria responded, moving to lean against the counter. She was very much enjoying their conversation, too, and wanted to be a little more comfortable as they talked. "Potion and Plant poisoning. Though, it's not really my passion in life." He may have remembered being dragged to all her dance recitals when they were little.

"Potion poisoning. Hence why you came down here to check up on a patient who died of potion poisoning," he tapped his temple and gave her a little grin. "Makes sense. But what still doesn't make sense is...why? I guess our interests change over the years. No more dancing, huh?" He did remember those recitals. He was always bored at those, but was forced to come anyway.

Astoria gave a little snort of laughter. That'd make sense, right? She grinned, but her grin faded a little when he asked her about dancing. It was a little sad that she wasn't dancing as much anymore. "Only when no one's looking, I'm afraid." Dancing and singing. She'd always had a beautiful singing voice.

"I gave it up when I decided to get serious about... about growing up and taking on responsibilities." Someone had to figure out how to keep her grandfather alive.

"Right, growing up," he nodded his head. He did his own growing up too. Mainly getting out of his house and making his own decisions.

He was debating what to say next. There was a place he knew of, a ballroom that held monthly dances. He'd come across it a lot, watch from time to time, but never actually went in because he didn't have anybody to go with. He thought maybe...just maybe...

"You know..." he began. Too late to take it back now. "You don't have to be all grown up all the time. There's this ballroom that holds dances every month and the next one is coming up. If you'd like, I could--I mean. We could. Just. You know. As friends."

Oh, he was completely adorable. Astoria found herself blushing again. In earnest. He was asking her on a dancing date! It was one of the cuter things that ever happened to her.

"I'd like that. A lot." Who'd have thought that coming down to the morgue to examine a possible poisoning victim's leftover body parts would end in being asked out on a date? "When?"

Okay. Now he was getting nervous again. He shifted uncomfortably and started to feel his palms get sweaty.

"Erm..." he began. He couldn't remember the date for the life of him now! Blast it! "It's er..."

He gave her a pathetic look. "I uhm..."

"You can owl me." Astoria said, hopefully. She gave him a gentle smile. He was adorable, and she didn't mind if he got a little flustered. He was almost more adorable when he was flustered.

"And we don't have to go dancing. We could just... have dinner." She shrugged softly.

He nodded his head. Owling. That works. Much easier than apparating into their house. Is that how it was done? He wasn't sure.

"Yeah. That works."

Astoria lifted herself up off the counter. As much as she was enjoying their conversation, it was time for her to get back to work. "I look forward to hearing from you," she said, giving him a warm smile. "It's nice to see you again after all these years,"

She turned to walk to the exit.

"Yeah. It was good," he replied, turning around. "Bye! I'll...send you an owl."

He watched as she left the Morgue, leaving him with quite a few body parts left to rebag. Damn. He'd actually have to learn how to dance now.
