Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ron and Hermione
When: Today, July 31st, after lunch
Where: St. Mungo's
What: Pretending not to stalk Hermione

Though Ron didn't like to admit it, he was a bit jealous of Harry's new life. Though he hadn't been married to Ginny that long, Ron thought he seemed happier for it, lighter, as though the burdens he'd always carried around were now more equally distributed between himself and someone who understood what he had been through. It was a good thing for Harry, and Ron was really starting to want the same thing for himself.

Which was why, despite his protests when Harry suggested he should tell Hermione how he felt, once and for all, Ron was hanging around the corridors of St. Mungo's on Friday afternoon, hoping to run into her, without making it look like he was running into her.

Ron was so focused on making himself look responsible and invested in his volunteer job to impress Hermione that he hadn't even considered telling her he was there to see her. That seemed like a foolish thing to do somehow, showing too many cards at once, handing over a pawn at the start of the chess match.

He was pleased enough when she said she had a copy of the schedule, because now they'd have a chance to really talk business, and he could really prove himself, but before he could get that far, papers were falling to his feet, and she was bending down to get them. "Oh," he said, crouching in one direction, then in another, trying to get down and help her without looking too eager or getting tied up in his long limbs. Finally, he managed to get down on one knee, and beginning handing her what she had dropped. "A lot of papers," he said with a sheepish chuckle. "You've always got a lot of papers."

"Thanks, Ron." Hermione said, blushing further. It didn't take long for her to collect most of the escaped parchment. Some of it was volunteer paperwork, and the rest was research for the Ministry. She reached toward him to accept the papers he'd picked up, and her fingers brushed against his.

The sensation of her skin against his made her pause. She withdrew her hand and the papers he'd handed her, her face going scarlet. "I really should have dropped some of these things off at my flat..." She said, distractedly, moving to stand once more.

"Oh, sure, yeah," Ron said, shaking his head as though what he'd done just now was truly nothing, and Hermione was making a fuss over it. Which she wasn't really, but he had a lot of pent-up nervous energy leftover from walking the halls hoping to run into her, and it was all bubbling over now. And the touch of her fingers against his, while brief, was pretty electrifying, and he had to wonder how something so small could make him feel so much.

"Did you... need any help carrying anything?" Ron offered, realizing he sounded like a fool, but hoping perhaps he would be thought of as kind if he offered. Not that Hermione wasn't capable of doing all of this by magic; Ron just thought it might be good to be a gentleman.

"Oh, no. Thank you, though. I can do it." She shifted all the papers back into her bag, and pulled out a volunteer schedule to hold out to him.

"Here's the schedule. Please let me know if you need to make any changes." That sounded really business like. She didn't mean to sound angry, but it sort of came out that way.

Ron was taken aback by the switch from the flustered witch who dropped papers to the businesslike witch who worried about changing schedules, but he tried not to let it throw him off too much. He didn't want Hermione to think he couldn't handle being supervised by her.

"I'm sure it's all fine," he said, standing up straighter and throwing his shoulders back a bit, showing his pride in his position as a volunteer. He glanced briefly at the parchment she'd handed him without really reading it at all and said, "Yup, everything's in order. I.. er... really appreciate you making the schedule like that," he said. "It's... uh, a big job, yeah?"

The businesslike witch was a much easier mask to wear. Hermione was much better at the blacks and whites of schedules than she was of trying to figure out Ron's motives for coming into the hall where she happened to be standing.

Hermione was a little impressed that Ron was so happy to volunteer. It warmed her inside a bit, actually. And she was secretly hoping they could spend a lot of their volunteer hours together. "It's... well, it's the kind of thing I'm good at, isn't it?" She flushed slightly. "I've been making studying schedules since first year."

Ron smiled a bit at the memory of Hermione in school, particularly their first couple of years when she had been so unbelievably serious and studious. "Well, yeah, you were always good at that studying stuff," he said. "I probably would have done better if I'd listened to you." He chuckled a bit. That was true, he thought. He knew he was getting old now, if he could recognize that Hermione's crazy studying actually had some merit.

"If I hadn't pushed so hard, you might have." Hermione said, smirking a bit. "You did really well, though, whether you listened to me or not."

Hermione was very proud of Ron, even though he wasn't as strong academically as she was.

Ron had to blush a bit then. He'd never felt like a good student, even in the things he was good at, really, and hearing from Hermione of all people that he wasn't a total moron felt like twice the victory. "Er. Thanks," he said, looking down at his feet, then back up at her. "Harry and I needed pushes now and then," he confessed. "I know I'd have done nothing but play Exploding Snap some nights if not for you."

"And Wizard Chess." Hermione reminded him. If only she was a little better at Wizard Chess, she might have joined him. And then there was Quidditch in later years. Hermione had never been confident on a broom. She didn't really understand the appeal.

"Someone had to keep you in check. Both of you." She re-shouldered her bag. "Where are you headed now?"

Ron nodded. "And Wizard Chess," he agreed. Because that really was his favorite, and an area in which he'd always been better than both of his best friends.

"Oh, um," he said, realizing he was already at his destination - chatting with Hermione in the hallway - and had no idea where else he was headed. "I'm heading out, I think?" he said. "I was just.. uh... you know... stopping by to check in. On the schedules! So... I did that, and... I'm about to leave."

The smile on her face faded just slightly--just enough that he might notice if he was looking at her--and she nodded. "Oh, all right. I thought... well, I was thinking about having a cup of tea before heading home." Either the tea room, or she could go to the Volunteer Room for one.

"Tea?" said Ron. "I like tea." Not the brightest comment he could have made, but it was something. "You know, not as much as butterbeer or firewhiskey," he joked, but then cleared his throat blushing. "Er. But tea. Would you like some compan-tea?" He paused, then realized what he'd said. "Company, rather. Company for tea."

Hermione broke into a smile. What had him so flustered? It was adorable, but a little confusing. She gave a little nod. "I'd love some company. Do you want to go out somewhere, or should we sit in the Volunteer Room?"

Either way they'd have to walk a bit down the hall, so she started walking.

Ron had no idea what his problem was. It wasn't like he'd planned to come here and tell her his feelings today, was it? No. Of course not. Just because Harry had gone and got married didn't mean he had to start running around professing his love from the mountaintops. He took a deep breath. Get it together, Weasley, he thought.

"Um, why don't we... go out?" He blushed, realizing it sounded like he was asking her on a date, which he wasn't, really, but he wished he was. "I like the volunteer room, but... I don't know. Haven't you been working all day?" There. He was calm, cool, and considerate now. Smooth sailing.

"I went to lunch with Harry." Hermione said. "Did you remember it's his birthday today?"

She hit the button for the lift. "In any case, I should take this bag home... but I'd love to go out. It's Friday, afterall."

"Oh, yeah, I remembered," said Ron. "I'll see him later on." He honestly had not forgotten, he was just caught up in the moment right now. "I hope I can get his married arse out of the house long enough to at least have a drink." He chuckled. "Um... so, then, take the bag home, and we'll go."

"All right. I'll just pop home and drop it off, and come back." Hermione said. "I'll be right back."

With a Crack! she was gone. Hermione apparated home to drop off her bag. She took a moment to pause in front of the mirror and run her hands over her hair. For a split second she debated changing into something more attractive, but then she realized he was waiting for her. She apparated back to the same spot in the hospital hallway.

In the moment that Hermione was gone, Ron ran a hand over his face, going over all the stupid things he'd undoubtedly just said, and wondering if Hermione thought this was a date, and if he wanted her to think so. Then he thought maybe he should have disapparated home for a moment himself to make sure his hair wasn't sticking up, or his breath didn't smell bad. But by the time he'd considered all of that, he heard another loud Crack! and Hermione was once again standing before him.

"Hi," he said, blushing for no reason other than being caught off-guard. "How was... dropping your bag off?"

"Fine," Hermione responded, a little surprised at his blush. She blushed herself a little, trying not to think about how adorable it was when he blushed. "Successful and uneventful."

Quick pause. "Shall we go, then?"

"Oh, yeah," said Ron. "Let's go." He gestured down the hallway to the lift. "After you," he said, then began to walk beside and just a bit behind her.

"Where did you and Harry have lunch?" he asked conversationally. "And where do you think I should suggest we go for drinks?" As ever, Ron knew that planning things like birthdays was a task best left to Hermione.

Hermione gave a soft nod of thanks, then walked with him along the hall.

"We went to a little deli." Hermione was proud of the plans she'd made for Harry's birthday. "I surprised him with cake, and the waitress and chef came out and sang to him."

Ron had a good laugh over that. He was starting to feel more comfortable, now they were discussing Harry. Their friendship with him was the biggest thing Ron and Hermione had in common after all, and it was comfortable territory for them both. "Was he totally horrified? Did anyone get a picture?" He shook his head. He wished he had been there to see that. Why hadn't he suggested celebrating his birthday as a trio? He wished he had now.

"He was completely horrified." Hermione said, beaming proudly. She shook her head a little, though, the smile fading. "I wish I'd taken a snap." She added, a little sadly.

"I think you should definitely suggest going to get drinks. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if he turned you down. I imagine he'd want to get home to Ginny."

Ron frowned. "I actually won't be surprised either," he said glumly. "I'm glad they're so well-matched and all. I mean, it's not like there's another bloke in the world I'd trust with my sister, because I wouldn't, but. I dunno." He shrugged. "Marriage is weird."

He didn't mean anything by this statement, of course, it was just mindless Ron chatter, but he realized after the words had left his mouth that perhaps this wasn't a wise thing to say to the only woman in the world he could imagine marrying himself. Oops. He swallowed. "I mean, you know, our best mate's married. Already. Harry." He shook his head. "It feels weird. I didn't realize Harry would want that so soon."

Hermione was a little surprised when Ron babbled what he babbled. Did that mean he wasn't interested in marriage? His parents were happily married. Maybe seeing Harry married changed his mind about it all. Hermione frowned just slightly as he backstepped.

"Well, Harry didn't exactly grow up with a loving family, did he?" Hermione reasoned. "He's always wanted that. Remember what he told us about the mirror of Erised?" She shrugged. "He wants a family more than anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't wait all that long to have children."

Ron nodded. "Yeah, alright, that's true," he conceded. "But I just figured, you know... he didn't have a lot of chances for fun during school either, what with his life always being in danger and all. I don't know what I thought he'd do. I guess I just thought he'd take some more time to worry about nothing, before he started in with a whole new list of worries."

This was what Ron had done, after all. He'd taken the relief it had given him when Harry turned out to be alive, and when Voldemort turned out to be defeated, and focused it into the energy it took to become an Auror, and the lack of energy it took to do absolutely nothing else with his life. The thought of growing up, of being married, and having children, and being responsible for people who loved him, and looked to him for their support, was terrifying. Ron had had a wonderful family his whole life, and he worried he'd never be able to create another one as wonderful on his own.

Hermione, though... When Ron looked at Hermione, scared as he was, suddenly it all seemed possible. And he wished he had the guts to damn his fears and just tell her his true feelings, instead of spouting what he knew to be nonsense, making it sound like he didn't care if he ever settled down. "Oh, God, children?" he said, even as he wished he'd shut his bloody mouth. "I hope not, at least not yet."

Hermione didn't take much of a break after the battle at Hogwarts. She'd gone to find her parents, come back and finished her schooling, then set straight into working for the Ministry and St. Mungo's, along with writing articles and letters to the editor for the Daily Prophet, and helping The Quibbler get back up and running. She hadn't slowed down or even thought about stopping since they were on the run. Truth was, Hermione was hiding from something. Or running from it, more like. She was alone, and she pretended she liked it that way. If she finally slowed down, she'd realize how lonely she really was.

"We'll see." Hermione said, then gave a little shrug. "I'd give it a year or two at the most."

"Ginny wants that, you think?" Ron said, not sure how he felt about his little sister growing up before he did. "What if she's like Mum, and they have a whole litter of kids?" Ron shook his head. "I bet they will, too, because Harry never had brothers or sisters." He sighed. "I can't even imagine Harry as a dad. I mean, he'll be a great one. I just... can't picture it."

"I think she's Harry's biggest obstacle." Hermione responded. She imagined that Ginny would want to have something of a career before having to take time off to have children. She didn't know anything about the kinds of maternity leave and support that Quidditch teams gave their players.

"I don't know. I can't imagine them having more than a half dozen, like your Mum and Dad." Hermione said, smirking a little. "I think it's going to be brilliant, actually. I think Harry and Ginny are going to be fantastic parents."

"And what about us?" Ron blurted, imagining the couch at Harry and Ginny's flat filled to the brim with little red-haired and black-haired Weasley-Potters and feeling a bit of a twinge for a moment. "I mean - " He took a breath, collecting himself. "Do you think either of us will ever have kids? Someday?"

He hadn't meant together, really. The thoughts about being with Hermione, and the thoughts about having kids sometimes went together, but at this moment, they really had been two separate ideas. He did wonder, though? What did Hermione want? How many girls? How many boys? What would she want to name them? Would they be little red-haired and brown-haired Granger-Weasleys? Did he want that? Yes, a small part of him whispered. A thousand times yes. But he couldn't face it. He was still too afraid.

"Oh, I don't know." Hermione sighed. She was doing her best to understand that he meant what about Ron, and what about Hermione, separately. "I suspect you'll have kids someday." She gave him a warm smile. Some girl would be lucky to end up with Ron as a husband. Oh, how she wished it was her.

The thought burned white hot in her brain, then she forced it away and shook her head.

"I think I'd fancy one of each. A boy and a girl." She went on, trying not to feel awkward about it. "I never had any brothers or sisters, but I see the way you Weasleys interact with each other. I think it'd be nice to have two."

Ron nodded. "I've got to, I think," he said. "Mum would kill me." He chuckled a bit. "I can't imagine only two, though. I bet that'd be pretty nice and quiet. Maybe there'd actually be enough time to spend with each of them, yeah?" He smiled a bit at that thought. He had always felt like the inferior child, and he thought maybe kids did better when they didn't feel lost in a crowd. Not that he was still upset over not being the favorite. He'd confronted that issue when he'd destroyed that awful horcrux. But there was still a part of him that thought maybe he didn't want quite so many kids, in case of them ever felt the inadequacies he had.

"Was it weird, being the only child?" he asked, curious, and showing an interest. "I always wondered what it'd be like."
