Who: Hermione and Ron
When: Christmas Eve
Where: The Burrow
What: Before dinner

Hermione arrived to The Burrow for Weasley Christmas Eve. Ron asked her to meet him there a little early, there was something he needed to do and wanted her to tag along. Hermione agreed, of course, since even though she figured their relationship was over, she still wanted to be Ron's friend.

She arrived an hour early, wearing her Christmas dress and nicest cloak. She knocked on the front door of The Burrow, wondering if Mrs. Weasley was going to try and force-feed her... again.

Ron reached behind him without looking back into the house and slammed the door shut. Before his mother could come yell at him for slamming doors, Ron took Hermione's gloved hand and started walking her away from the Burrow.

Ottery St Catchpole was, in Ron's opinion, the prettiest place in the world. There weren't many houses and people from the nearby village didn't come up this way very often. Every house seemed to have a large piece of land to go with it and you never had to worry about neighbours seeing what you were up to. Perfect. And the perfect place to have a family.

Walking together in the snow, Ron charmed their feet to stay warm. "Thanks for coming. I, uh, hope I wasn't ruining plans you had with your parents or anything."

Hermione let Ron drag him away from The Burrow, wondering why he'd want her to come with him and not Harry or another Auror. She was a little impressed with his charm on their feet as they walked. The snow seemed to melt out of their way as they walked.

Her hand wrapped around his firmly.

"No, I'll see my parents tomorrow. Today's time for my Weasley family." She said, giving Ron a little smirk. "But... why'd you ask me along? Not Harry?" Maybe he didn't want to pull Harry away from Ginny.

Well shit. That was a good question. Ron hadn't factored in Hermione's fondness for asking questions. "Uh. Harry was busy with Ginny. I didn't want her throwing a fit that he was working today." That sound plausible, right?

Ron continued to lead Hermione north of the Burrow. He couldn't have asked for a better night for this. No clouds in the sky and their breath showed in the air. It was perfect and Ron always liked the way Hermione looked in the snow.

It wasn't a far walk to his house. All you had to do was cut through the orchard behind his parents' house and along a tiny creek that flowed from the Lovegood's old house to the Diggory house. No. Not the Diggory house. The Weasley house. He'd need a better name for it than that, wouldn't he?

The creek was nearly frozen over and Ron smiled to himself, imagining how nice it would be come spring. "Are you cold? Sorry it's so chilly out tonight."

Very plausible. Hermione bought it hook, line and sinker. She followed along with him, enjoying the brisk walk. Even though it was very cold, she felt warm with her hand in his and the charm he'd placed on her feet.

--Speaking of which, why was he still holding her hand?

"No, I'm all right. That charm was pretty brilliant." She said, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. She glanced up to look at the house they were walking toward. It was a really great house.

"I have my moments," he said with a self deprecating grin. Ron knew he wasn't nearly as brilliant as Hermione or Harry, but occasionally he had a good idea or two. Hopefully this turned out to be one of them.

He could see the outline of his house in the dark. Two big stories with plenty of room for them. The gardens were blanketed with snow, but Ron had come earlier to clear off a section by the well in the back.

"This shouldn't take long," he said. "Just have to make sure all the wards on the place are secure." If she asked too many more questions, Ron was going to be in trouble. As they drew closer to the house they could see the big windows and old pine trees surrounding the gardens. "Let's go around to the back," he suggested.

They all had their moments, but Ron's were sometimes a lot more heartfelt than either Hermione's or Harry's. Hermione was clever and Harry was brave, but Ron was the heart of their trio.

Hermione gave a nod, content to follow him for a few more minutes in silence before asking again. Thankfully they arrived at the house before more questions came to her mind. She gave a nod.

"All right. Should I have my wand out?" She asked, now feeling a little nervous. Sure, she'd dealt with more than most her age, but she wasn't an Auror.

"Uh. No. It's okay. I mean, no one is here or anything." They couldn't really walk near the house without being someone Ron trusted. Sure the war had ended and all of that, but that didn't change the fact that there were a lot of people who still didn't like the three of them. Ron wasn't going to live causally without taking some small precautions.

Pulling on her hand lightly, Ron led Hermione around towards the back of the house. There was a cheerful stone patio with a small well. Not a flake of snow could be seen on the stone. Walking her over to the well, Ron stopped and let go of her hand.

"So. Um. What do you think of the house?" Please don't let her hate it. If she hated it, Ron was going to throw himself down the well.

Hermione found it to be a little strange that there was no snow on the stone of the patio or well. She wondered if the owners of the house put a charm on the stones to repel the snow. It wasn't far fetched--witches and wizards had charms for nearly everything.

She turned to look at the house, still confused as to what was going on. First she hadn't heard from Ron in ages, he didn't want to go to dinner with her, and now he'd kissed her and wouldn't let go of her hand. What was up?

"It's... very nice." She said, turning to look at him. "Are the wards up?" That's what they were here for, right?

"Yeah, they are. But, uh, you see." Okay. He could do this. Ron had gone over what he was going to say a hundred times in his head. He practised in front of a mirror. He rehearsed it to a picture of Hermione. Ron knew what he was going to say.

Or he did until he was in the moment. Suddenly Ron had no idea what he was going to say or how he felt. He was in love with her and she was standing in the very spot he'd dreamed of her being for years and his tongue stopped working.

"I'm sorry I'm not a good boyfriend." It didn't occur to Ron that she might not think of him that way. In his mind, Hermione was his and no one else's. At all. Ever. "I really did try to have good dates with you, but you just make me so nervous and I can't think about behaving or being careful because all I can do it think about you and how pretty you are."

Hermione turned to look at him, curiously. She honestly had no idea what was going on. With anyone else (except possibly Harry) she would have been uneasy about not having a clue as to what was about to happen.

And then he started talking, and Hermione's heart seemed to stop. His words sunk in deep and soft, warming her from the inside much like the charm on her feet warmed her.

"You... oh, honestly, Ron, you were a terrific boyfriend. You've always been my best friend." She said, softly, but for some reason it didn't seem like she should be speaking right now. There was a voice in her head telling her to shut up, so she obeyed and went quiet.

Luckily Ron didn't notice her use of the past tense. If he had, Ron might have lost his nerve to keep going. As it was, Ron barreled on, speaking faster and faster with each word.

"I had this plan. For years. Ever since the end of the war when we got our lives back." Okay, so it was before then. It was during his fourth year at the Yule Ball. The night he saw Hermione in that dress with Krum. That was the moment Ron had figured it all out. "I had to show you that I could take care of you. I know I'm not Harry. He's brilliant, yeah? And I'm not some famous Quidditch star either. I'm not even the best Auror they have at the Ministry, but I do all right. And I'll always make sure that I keep doing all right. You know?"

Hermione was listening, but he wasn't making sense. What plan? Why did he have to show her that he could take care of her? Unless he was planning on taking care of her...

Her eyes went a little wide. That couldn't be. It couldn't...

"Ron..." She said, more of a question than anything else as she looked past him to the house, and back again. "Whose house is this?"

Swallowing against a dry mouth, Ron wondered how someone could sweat so much when it was freezing outside. But he was certainly sweating. Loads. "Uh. Well. I mean, you like it right?" Shit, no that wasn't what he wanted to say. Ron shook his head and took a deep breath. He was going to do this right.

"I didn't get you a ring. I wanted to, but, um, well I didn't have any money left to get you a ring and I figured you'd rather have a house, right? It's practical and it's better than a promise with a diamond because we can make it our home. And I asked your parents. They gave me permission, so if you want to, um, I want you to live here. With me. I want us to live here together. You know, forever. Well not forever because no one lives forever, but for a really long time until we have great-grandchildren and stuff like that. So will you?"

Hermione glanced at him, then at the house, then to him again, her jaw dropping open to gape.

"I... I need to sit down." Hermione said, her grip on his hand tightening a little. She'd thought they were over, and he must've thought they were just beginning.

That wasn't what he expected to hear. And that didn't sound like a good response to what he'd asked. Ron's heart went from pounding against his rib cage to plummeting down to his feet. Pulling her lightly, Ron took Hermione inside the house. There wasn't much of anything inside, but Ron had a wand. The sconces on the walls lit up when they walked inside and Ron conjured a squashy looking sofa in the living room.

Helping Hermione sit down, Ron let go of her hand and took a step backwards. He really thought she was going to say yes and kiss him and smile. But she must have thought he was crazy. Absolutely crazy.

Hermione let him lead her into the house and sat down. She was still in awe of all of this. She looked up at him, her eyes brimming now with tears as everything sank in.

"Oh, Ron." She said, reaching for his hand once more. "Ron, this is the most amazing... most romantic thing anyone's ever done for me." She said, breaking into a warm smile.

Ron didn't take Hermione's tears as a sign of happiness. He was convinced she thought him a fool. Now he could see the fault in his plan. He spent so much time preparing for his future with Hermione that he hadn't spent enough time with her in the here and now. Merlin save him, he was an idiot.

He let her take his hand and tried not to look too heartbroken. She would let him down easy. Ron knew that much. And then they'd find some way to be friends. But Ron knew, without a doubt that he'd never love anyone the way he loved Hermione.

"Yeah. Well." How was he going to face his brothers? He'd bought a house for Hermione and now she was turning him down.

"Well, nothing." Hermione said. She didn't know how he was feeling--she was so overwhelmed with the idea that he'd bought her a house as an engagement present. So much more useful than a ring.

Then again, there was the idea that he wanted to spend his life with her. Forever, he'd said. And she couldn't wait to start spending forever with him. A gentle smile was starting to curve her features as she gave his hand a tug to bring him closer against her. "When do we move in?"

Ron stepped forward with the tug. All he could think of was losing Hermione. It broke his heart in ways he never knew possible. Ron was about to pull away and try to regain his pride when she asked him a question.

"What?! You... You... But you didn't say yes."

"Oh, I'm sorry." Hermione said, tugging on his hand again. She really couldn't believe her luck. He hadn't been avoiding her, he'd been... buying a house for her. For them, really. A house for them to move into together.

"Yes. A thousand times yes." She tugged him again, even closer, hoping to pull him onto the sofa with her. She was unable to hide her excitement and happiness now. "When do we move in?"

And as quickly as the heartbreak had appeared it vanished. Ron's heart swelled up to the size of a Quaffle and he fell to his knees in front of Hermione. "You're going to marry me," he said in awe. No amount of planning could have prepared him for the joy he felt knowing she was his forever.

Wrapping his arms around her, Ron pulled Hermione close and kissed her with everything he felt. His hands were lost in her hair and his lips moved against hers until his lungs were straining for air. "I love you," he said as he exhaled. "I love you, Mione. You can move in tonight except I don't have a bed. I was waiting for you."

Hermione nodded, grinning a bigger and more excited grin than she'd ever grinned in her whole life as he dropped to his knees in front of her. "Yes." She repeated. She was going to marry him.

And then they were embracing. His arms were around her, and hers around him, and they were kissing deeply and passionately. "I love you, too." She responded when he pulled back. "I always have. And... yes. We have to spend tonight here. Just the two of us. Can we conjure a bed? I don't want to leave."

Hearing that for the first time was enough to make Ron forget about the feast his mother was cooking less than a mile away. He kissed Hermione again, leaning her back on the sofa and making sure he enjoyed this moment. It was never going to happen again, right?

"Don't tell your Dad," Ron teased against her lips. "He's pretty scary when he wants to be."

They only had this once. It was a once-in-a-lifetime snogging session. They would only have just been engaged once. Only the draw of Mrs. Weasley's cooking might pull Hermione away from their house. Maybe. Probably not. She was looking forward to spending the time with him and him alone tonight. They could order food, or just forego food for the night and go get something in the morning. Hermione's tummy was too excited for food, anyway.

Hermione pressed closer to him, giving some soft, lazy kisses. She pulled back after he spoke, blushing and grinning softly. "You spoke with my father?"

"Course I asked you dad," Ron said as thought it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Your Mum, too." Turning his attention to her cheeks and neck, Ron placed light kisses all over the place at random. She tasted better than he'd expected.

By now, Ron was completely on the sofa and had forgotten about everything except for the woman in his arms. He was a lucky git, Ron knew that much. The luckiest in the world, actually.

"I really love you," he said again as though Hermione might not have believed him.

"Wow. I didn't--well, I guess I just didn't expect you to..." She shrugged, grinning at the kisses along her cheeks and neck. She gave a soft giggle.

"I've loved you almost since the first day I met you." Hermione said, going rather pink. "I didn't realize it until fairly recently." She added softly, then turned to catch his lips with her own.
