Stopping in his vault to get some gold had been a sobering experience. His vault was never stuffed to the walls, but it had contained a nice pile of Galleons up until a week or so ago. Seeing how much of his gold was gone made Ron a little ill. He had put his entire savings into a future that he didn't know was possible or not. Not the smartest move he had ever made, but Ron knew deep down in his gut that he had made the right choice.

Pulling out a few Galleons and taking them to be exchanged for Muggle money. Pushing the notes into his pocket Ron left Diagon. He stopped at the first clothing store he saw and bought a new pair of trousers and shirt. Ron remembered at the last second to purchase a tie though he had to have the clerk help him tie it. Muggles wore the oddest things.

After finding a private place to apparate from, Ron appeared a few blocks from the Granger house. Luckily he'd met her parents a few times over the years, but that didn't stop his heart from thudding against his ribcage.

Walking up to the door, Ron swallowed against a dry throat and knocked. Merlin's balls, what if they said no?!

Ron wiped his palm on his coat before slipping it off and handing it to Mrs Granger. "Thanks. And tea would be brilliant." Was it hot in their house? It had to have been hot. Ron was starting to sweat. He shook Mr Granger's hand, wincing slightly at how damp his palm was.

He was convinced he was already making a fool of himself. His self esteem was about on level with his shoes.

Walking into the living room, Ron sat on the very edge of their sofa. He couldn't make himself get comfortable. Looking around, Ron saw a picture of Hermione which didn't help his nerves at all. In fact, the more he looked the more pictures he saw of Hermione. It was like she was staring at him. "Well, Sir," he said addressing Hermione's father, "You know that Hermione and I have been friends for a long time. And we've been through a lot together. She's a great woman, you're daughter. I don't think I'd be alive today if it wasn't for everything she taught me and did for me."

Mrs. Granger moved to hang his coat up by the door where the rest of the coats were hung. One of them was Hermione's. She smiled softly as she looked at the two coats hanging side by side, then flitted off to the kitchen to put the kettle on.

Mr. Granger shook Ron's hand, then turned to motion them into the living room. He took a seat in the armchair opposite the sofa, watching the other boy with a suspicious eye. He was certainly acting strange. But when Ron spoke, the words seemed to ease Mr. Granger's suspicions. A little smile crossed his features.

"She is. She's a remarkable young woman, and I couldn't be prouder of her."

Mrs. Granger came into the room with a tray of vegetables and cheese and crackers. She set it down on the coffee table, then took her seat in her arm chair next to Mr. Granger's. "What about Hermione?" She asked, glancing from one man to the other.

Ron had grabbed for the food quickly. Not because he was hungry. He was really too nervous to have much an appetite, but putting something in his mouth gave him a few minutes before he had to talk again. And talking about this was really, really frightening.

Swallowing a mouthful of carrots and crackers, Ron tried to smile. He wiped his hands on his trousers and took a deep breath. Years of planning had led him to this moment and he felt like he was going to pass out.

"I was saying how brilliant she is. And that I-- I--" The words completely escaped Ron then. He'd never said them to anyone, let alone her parents. With his voice cracking, Ron continued. "I love your daughter very much."

Mrs. Granger reached for a cracker herself, but simply held it between her long fingers, watching Ron carefully as he spoke. She looked an awful lot like her daughter. Everything from her poise to her long, thin fingers. Her hair, even though it was quite a bit more grey than Hermione's, and kept up in a bun, was pleasantly messy. She wore a very warm smile, much like the smile Hermione wore when she was matronly supervising, or tutoring.

"We love her very much, too." Mr. Granger replied. His expression was torn between amused and concerned. It was obvious that he had some idea where this conversation was going, as he'd been on the other end of it twenty-some years ago.

A voice in Ron's head was calling him all sorts of names. Coward. Chicken. Slytherin. Ron knew he had to get on with it, but his tongue seemed glued to the roof of his mouth. He was worried it was going to stay firmly attached there.

"I, uh, um, I know you both don't know me very well. I, um, I know that I'm not as smart as Hermione or brilliant as you might want, but.." He could do this. Really. He could. Ron curled his hands into fists to stop them from shaking before trying again.

Instead of asking permission, something else came out instead. "I bought her a house."

Mr. Granger looked rather confused, but Mrs. Granger gasped and brought both hands up to clasp on her mouth. "You didn't!" She squealed from behind her hands.

Mr. Granger put his hand up as if to stop Mrs. Granger from shooting herself across the room and into Ron's lap. He gave Ron a rather stern look. "You did what now?"

The stern look on Mr Granger's face made Ron pale to a shade just shy of white. He swallowed hard again and clenched his hands which did nothing to stop them from shaking. Suddenly, Ron was convinced he'd made a mistake and he was going to be thrown out of their home. All of his plans were going to go out the widow and was it too late to stop the paperwork on the house?

"I, uh, uh, uh."

Mrs. Granger smacked at her husband's hand, then did vault herself across the room to sit on the sofa next to Ron. "Don't be so horrible, Charles!" She said, then wrapped her arms around Ron and pulled him into a hug. "What a wonderful thing to do, Ron!"

Mr. Granger broke into a bit of a grin. He seemed like he couldn't hold it back any longer. "Come on, now, Wanda, let the boy breathe."

She pulled back from the hug, but remained next to him on the sofa, holding one of his hands in her own on her knee.

It took Ron a few minutes to register that Mr. Granger had only been joking. And a few more minutes seemed to go by before his heart stopped pounding in his chest. Ron let out a shaky breath and tried to laugh.

"Oh. Very funny, Sir." Jerk. Ron felt like he was going to fall over and tried his best to regain control of his voice.

Looking back and forth between Mr. and Mrs. Granger, Ron forced himself to ask his next question. He really had to hope they said yes or this was all going to be very awkward.

"I, um, see I wouldn't dream of asking Hermione to live there until we were, um, married. So, I wanted to know if I had your permission to ask her to marry me?" Ron visibly winced at his question as though he expected them both to yell at him.

"Of course you do!" Mrs. Granger said before Mr. Granger could say anything. She clapped her hands together and bounced in her seat. "Oh, Ronald, you dear, dear boy!" She wrapped her arms around him again.

Mr. Granger gave a nod once she was finished speaking. "You have our blessing, Son."

Ron awkwardly hugged Mrs. Granger back. He never did that well with people hugging him and, Merlin, she could hug tight. It was a good thing Ron was already use to going through this visit without breathing or he'd be in trouble.

"Th-thanks. Really. I promise I'll take good care of her. I swear." How he was going to do that, Ron wasn't entirely sure, but he knew he'd find a way.

"Oh. Um. Does it matter to either of you that Hermione and I aren't really dating yet? Because we're not. Not really." Maybe he should've told them that first.

"Oh, come now," Mrs. Granger said, lifting her handkerchief to take her glasses off and wipe the tears from under her eyes. "You two were made for each other. You've been off and on since school," she added, dabbing under her eyes. The kettle started to whistle, so she stood to go make the tea.

Mr. Granger watched his wife leave the room, then turned his attention back to Ron. "You've got a good job, Son?" He asked. Now that his wife left the room he could get down to business. "Where's this house?"

Ron still didn't feel confident. Mr. Granger could take his blessing back at any minute. He had to keep showing the man that he'd be a good provider for Hermione.

"Yeah. I mean, yes, Sir. I work as an Auror. With Harry. We're in charge of tracking down Dark Wizards and putting them in prison. And the house is in Ottery St. Catchpole, a few miles from my family's house. It needs work, but it's big enough for a family and all her books. I made sure there were lots of shelves."

"How's the market out in Ottery St. Catchpole?" Mr. Granger asked, considering everything Ron was saying to him very carefully. "Real estate prices going up?" He added, leaning back in his chair and steepling his fingers to observe Ron over the tips.

"Umm." Ron didn't know. "It's mostly wizards around the area. People live there for a long time. It's really safe though. And really pretty. Lots of trees and some small ponds." He didn't feel like he was going to faint, but Ron was still nervous.

"My brother looked over the mortgage papers for me. He said it was a good thing and all that."

"Your brother's a lawyer?" Mr. Granger asked before he could help it. "--Do you... uh... have lawyers in your world?" It was obvious by the way he said it that the idea his daughter lived in a different world than he did was rather painful to him.

Mrs. Granger came back into the room, carrying a second tray with a teapot, teacups, cream, sugar and honey. She set it on the table, then sat down. "When are you going to do it?" She asked, excitedly. She was obviously rather excited.
