Who: Tim and Audrey
When: Sunday Morning
Where: Her place
What: Surprise visit
Rating: TBD

The day after Halloween, and the first day of November. It was chilly, crisp, and clean. Tim was in a smashing mood. He was going to visit Audrey, and stupid Percy wouldn't be there. This morning, Tim was dressed sharp. He could claim he was going to church, or something if she asked, but the truth was he wanted to look nice to see her. He'd stopped by a cafe to pick up some breakfast cake and a couple cups of tea, then apparated to her doorstep and knocked. It wasn't the first time he'd been in her home, but it may very well have been the first time when Percy was out of the country.

On her doorstep between knocking and the answering of the door, Tim was thinking about Emma, and the fun they'd had on their date swing dancing. He thought about kissing her. He thought about her hair, her smile. He almost half-expected her to answer when the door swung open.

"I hate it," she said bluntly. "Being alone. We've been married for so long that I'm use to him being here all the time. I know how pathetic that sounds, but I keep hearing sounds in the middle of the night and I swear someone is going to come in to hurt me even though we live in the safest neighbourhood and we've never had a problem before. Just my mind playing tricks on me, I suppose."

Audrey pulled a plate out of a cabinet and a knife from a drawer. Her kitchen was bright and sunny with fresh flowers on the kitchen table. Audrey loved the room and it was her favourite in the house. "I'm glad you came by. It'll help relax me."

Tim gave a little nod. He felt like he was always alone, so he wasn't sure exactly how she felt. But being scared and lonely was never a good thing.

He followed her into the kitchen. It was beautiful. He could tell she'd done the decorating, because it just screamed Audrey. Well, in a beautiful, calm way.

"That's what I'm here for. Relaxing and the occasional coffee cake." He set the coffee cake down on the table and leaned against the counter.

Sitting down in one of the kitchen chairs, Audrey cut into the coffee cake and plated some for Tim and herself. "Sit down," she said and nodded to the chair next to hers.

Setting a plate down in front of the chair, Audrey started picking at hers. "So what are you up to this morning?"

Tim took the seat next to hers, leaning back a little. He was holding his tea in both hands, enjoying the warmth he felt through the cup.

"Besides visiting you?" He asked, grinning.

"Well, yes, besides visiting me. Though if you wish to make this a day long visit I certainly won't object." Audrey grinned at him again, feeling so much better about being alone.

"Thank you," she said softly. "I'm so lucky to have you as a friend."

"Yeah, of course." Tim said, shaking his head a little. "No problem."

He turned to watch her for a long moment. It was funny how much she made his heart swell. "No, I'm the lucky one."

"Oh?" Audrey's smile was bright and cheerful. "Why are you so lucky?"

"Because you let me spend so much time with you." His smile fell a little as he grew a step more serious.

"You have no idea how much it means to me." Did he have to say it? He was kicking himself for bringing it up. Why now? When they were so happy? It was going to ruin everything.

"I hardly let you spend time with me. You make it sound as though it's a sacrifice or something. You're my best friend, Tim, I love spending time with you."

There was a change in the tone of his voice. With her friends, Audrey had learned to relaxed her instincts and refused to see them as patients, but something pricked at her mind and Audrey took a moment to consider Tim seriously.

"Is everything all right?"

Tim was fighting with himself. It was an inner struggle like he'd never really experienced before. He shifted in his chair and set down his tea on the table.

"I love spending time with you, too." He responded to her question, almost as if he hadn't heard what she'd said. "Because I love you." Pause. "I always have."

Audrey stared at Tim for a long moment. It was as though someone had provided her the answer to a problem she'd never tried to solve. But the moment she had the answer, all of the steps fell into place. She could see the patterns and the behaviour as clear as day.

Oh, how her heart ached. Tim was the most wonderful person in the world. He was smart and handsome and cared about her. She could never remember him doing something that upset her. She could never remember thinking badly of him at any point in time. But she didn't love him.

Audrey didn't know what to say. There would be no letting Tim down easily. No matter what she said, she was going to hurt him. He was one of the few people she had ever discussed the low points of her marriage with. And now she was going to have to tell him that despite how wonderful he was to her and despite how much she adored him, she didn't love him.

"Tim," she said softly. "I... I'm sorry."

He couldn't seem to look at her. His eyes were focused on the table, his brow furrowed slightly. He shook his head a little. He wasn't sure why he said it. Why'd he have to say it?

"It's not... please don't..." He felt like a stone statue. Like a gargoyle. His emotions were draining, and all that was left was pain.

"Don't be sorry."

Audrey couldn't believe what was happening. She was hurting her best friend. All he had done was love her and care about her and she had no choice but to hurt him.

Tears formed in her eyes and Audrey did nothing to hold them back. "Tim, please. Look at me at least. You're so wonderful and I do love you, but Percy..." She sighed. Nothing Audrey said was going to make this better.

"You mean so much to me. I can't imagine not having you in my life."

Tim gave a little nod, but he still couldn't look at her. He simply closed his eyes for a moment, counting in his head. He could hear the tears in her voice, and was doing his best not to follow in her lead. It was hard.

"Yeah, me too." He said, very softly. When he opened his eyes they were rather wet.

"I should go."

Audrey didn't try to stop him. What was she going to say? Please stay and they could talk about this? Audrey wasn't going to insult Tim like that. But she didn't want him to leave. She wanted her best friend not to be hurting. It killed her that there was nothing she could do to make it better.

Her heart stung when Audrey saw the tears in Tim's eyes and she looked down at the table. "All right," she said quietly. She hated herself for doing this to him. "I'll..." What? Talk to him soon? See him later? Audrey sighed and knew she was going to have to wait for Tim to feel ready to talk to her again.

In the course of a few days her husband had gone off and now she was losing her best friend. Audrey had never felt so alone. "Goodbye," she said while staring down at the table.

Tim climbed up out of his chair and walked toward the door. He felt completely numb now. It was out in the open, and his feelings weren't reciprocated. Well, at least now he knew.

He turned to her, feeling terrible for what he'd just done to her. After a very brief moment he bent down to kiss her cheek. It was quick, then he turned to let himself out.
