Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Adrian & Kaira
Where: Cafeteria
When: Lunchtime
What: Eating alone. Or so he thinks.

A plate of roast beef. Rare, pink, bloody roast beef. There was also chicken for lunch today. And vegan noodles. And a curry plate. But there was only one body in the fridge and that was left over from last night. He finished that autopsy long before noon. It was another mismatched potion. Adrian was bored. So he decided to order some roast beef and cut it up.

He wasn't even hungry.

Carrying his tray, he stalked around the cafeteria looking for a completely empty table. Every table always had at least one person sitting there. The chatty groups of friends were the worst ones because he felt their sudden silence as he walked by.

Adrian finally found an empty one in the corner of the room. He set his tray down with a clammer and took out his scalpel. It wasn't long before someone decided to sit down in front of him.

He tried his hardest to ignore their presence.

"Alright," she said, eyes wide by his outburst, but managing a smile. "That's good to hear, I was a little concerned for a few seconds," she took another drink, watching him curiously, her comment seemed to have really upset him.

"So do you eat other meat, or are you a vegetarian then," she said conversationally. So help her Merlin she was going to get this guy to talk.

"Nothing red," he made an elaborate butterfly cut into one of the slices of meat. "You'd stop too if you had to knead your fingers through a body whose muscles were half putrid and half festering with maggots."

He paused and looked at her dish. "It was almost the color of your curry," he deadpanned. Ok, not really, but it was his dark humor shining through. Adrian felt a tug at his lips but caught it before it became a smile.

Kaira's eyebrow arched as he cut into the meat, well wasn't he all doom and gloom. She had her fork halfway to her mouth when he made the comment about the curry as she nearly choked on her laugh. She took a moment to swallow back her disgust before she looked at him, noting the expression on his face as he watched her.

Feeling competitive Kaira merely smiled broadly before putting the forkful in her mouth and chewing with relish, eyes on his the entire time as she swallowed. "You're missing out you know," she bit into the twist of a smile. "There is very little that could ruin my appetite, you should give it another try."

She was staring back. It made him highly uncomfortable. The way her eyes were focused on him was different than most people who would stare. He wasn't used to eyes being upturned. Happy, almost. She didn't look at all like a corpse.

And then Kaira's mouth became a smile. As hard as he tried to keep his lips together, her smile was...infectious? Adrian's lips peeled back to become a smile of his own. The comment, which wasn't at all what he expected, along with how uncomfortable he felt, led to an eruption of nervous laughter from Adrian.

To say his laughter was unexpected, would be an understatement but Kaira took it in a stride and chuckled softly with him. He had a nice smile too, he definitely should use it more. Kaira studied him before taking another sip of her pumpkin juice, judging by his discomfort level, she probably shouldn't tell him to smile more, at least not just yet.

"So I'm guessing your morning wasn't as enthralling as you'd hoped," she nodded towards the cut up red meat. She wasn't an expert but Adrien either had a weird fetish for practicing dissections on meat, or he resolved boredom in a very unusual way. She hoped it was the latter.

Adrian put his head down to his plate. "Uneventful. Nobody died last night." Suddenly, his meat didn't look so entertaining anymore.

He put his scalpel down and looked back up. He stared at her nametag. Kaira Bundy. "H-" he began. Adrian was apprehensive. "How was yours?"

"Hmm," Kaira mused, her finger tracings patterns on the tabletop absently. "It's kind of sad that 'eventful' equates dead bodies though," she gave a half shrug, "eventful for me means engorged bodies, and spells gone horribly wrong."

Kaira sighed and picked up her drink, finishing off the rest. "Mine was...very eventful," she rubbed her forehead slightly and smiled tiredly at him. "I would have hoped that magic would make it easier to avoid most situations, I mean," she bit into her lip, "heart attacks, sliced off fingers, all easily repaired in the magic world. Instead magic has just created newer ways to inflict damage onto ourselves," she gave a wry smile.

He raised an eyebrow. "Really?" Adrian was curious now. "Like what?"

"I just mean that people turn their husbands into giant squids instead of taking a chair to their heads," she gave a smile. "So instead of muggle stitches, the guy needs to de-spell, can't say which would be worse," with her food finished she reached into her uniform pocket to pull out two packages of chocolate frogs.

"It must be lonely down in the morgue," she changed topics while simultaneously offering a frog to him, "want one?"

Adrian nodded his head at her story. It sounded delightfully dreadful.

"I make my own company," he replied simply. It was true. He'd have a lot to tell Rosemary -- his doll -- tonight.

He stared at the little chocolate frog. He was tempted to take one, but he really wasn't hungry at all.

Kaira noticed his hesitation and set the package down, pushing it over so that it was just in front of him. He would take it, she gave him an arch look to get her point across.

"Make your own company?" Kaira said after a moment, amused, "does that mean imaginary friends, or talking to dead bodies?"

He grabbed the frog with two fingers and fished it toward himself.

"It means neither," he replied curtly. Even if he did talk to his dead bodies, he didn't want people to know about it.

Kaira knew she'd toed the line somewhere. "Well then maybe I'll come by from time to time," she said instead, canting her head to the side, waiting to see what he'd say to that.

"Uhm," he looked around himself, checking to see if anybody was looking. He was half expecting the world to crumble into a crowd of laughing faces. "Okay," he managed to spit out.

Adrian suddenly felt sick in his stomach and wanted to get out of there.

Kaira pursed her lips, but held back a good-humoured smile. "Relax I promise I won't eat you or anything," she bit into her lip, trying to think of a good way for him to let his guard down around her.

"How about I bring down my muggle dvd player and we can watch some sci-fi shows. Of your choosing of course," she offered.

Adrian made a noise in between a snort and laughter. He shook his head like a skittish zebra and had trouble deciding whether he wanted to grin or scowl. Relax? That was the exact opposite of how she was making him feel. She wanted to...watch movies with him? His palms felt sweaty.

"I uhm. I have to...go. Now," Getting up, he awkwardly bumped his knees into the the bottom of the table. "Shite! I mean, okay."

Kaira watched him nail his knees on the table and winced. "Okay," she said calmly, offering a warm smile. She'd probably overstayed her visit, he looked like he was panicking. "I guess I'll see you later then Adrian," she winked and stood up, taking her stuff with her to dispose of.
