Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Percy & Ron
What: Percy visits Ron's flat. And is APPALLED
Where: Ron's flat
When: Friday evening; before Weasley dinner and after the auction

Percy had been following the date auction and was pleased to see that his little brother was won by no one other than Hermione Granger. Percy thought that she was exactly what he needed to mature him. He was how old and still couldn't cook his own meals? Unacceptable.

Work ended. He decided a visit to Ron's flat was in order, just to check up on things. Then afterwards, they could go to dinner at the Burrow. It made perfect sense to Percy.

He landed in front of his place with a crack. It was rude to apparate directly into his living room, even if they were brothers. Percy made three loud raps on Ron's door.

"Ron! It's Percy!" He called. Oi, he hoped the kid was at least out of bed and not napping or something at this hour.

Percy sighed disapprovingly. Was he really that transparent?

"Well, no, not just that," he said, almost whining. "Is it really too much for you to handle that I want to check up on my baby brother? I do care about you after all." Well, it was the truth. Not just the full truth. He was a little bit more interested in seeing how much work he'd have to do to get Ron in proper, dateable shape.

"But honestly Ron, this flat is a terrific mess! When was the last time you saw the floor?" Percy took out his wand and levitated some articles of clothing out of his walkway.

Transparent, predictable, annoying, these words were interchangeable for Ron at the moment. He just wanted to be left alone, he didn't want lots of useless advice or bloody criticism.

"Yeah, yeah, you care, and I don't clean, got it," he said sourly. "I don't need to see the floor, and since I'm the only one who lives here, it doesn't matter." He glared as Percy began to shift some of Ron's dirty clothes around. "Did you really come over to clean up after me? Honestly?" He sighed. "Did Mum send you over here?" He groaned. "Oh God, please tell me you haven't told Mum about the auction."

He pursed his lips. "Ron, of course it matters. It has to do with maturity and adulthood if you can clean after yourself." Percy pushed Ron's legs off the couch and took a seat next to his slumped brother.

"No. Mum did not send me." He sighed. "Though I'm sure she'd be thrilled to hear about it, I haven't told her about the auction. But I have followed it myself. How do you expect to give Hermione a proper date if your flat is a complete mess?"

Ron heard those buzzwords that indicated a lecture had begun, and he groaned. "What has my flat got to do with Hermione?" he grumbled. "It's not like we're having our date here, that would just be stupid." He rolled his eyes. He was glad, truly, that Percy had come to his senses and back into the Weasley fold, but the man was sometimes just insufferably annoying.

"Seriously, she knows me, she knows I'm not mature." He shook his head, shoving Percy slightly as he sat beside him. "And I'm sure she's only doing the date because Harry told her to bid on me, it doesn't even count, I don't think."

"I didn't mean that you should bring her here," he sighed. Ron just wasn't getting it, was he? "But honestly, how far do you expect you'll go in life if you keep living this way? No woman -- not just Hermione -- would find this acceptable."

"Well, I find it acceptable, and I'm the only who's got to live in it," Ron said. "And if I'm not actually bringing a girl back here, how do they know what it looks like? You're not making any sense, Percy. If you want a clean flat, go on back to your place and admire your cleanliness."

"No it's--Ron! No. Cleaning's not the point!" Percy shook his head, his frustration growing more apparent. Well, it was about being clean, but it wasn't JUST that. He was missing the point completely!

"It's--" He sighed, unable to sugarcoat it much longer, getting up to stare down at Ron. "You're irresponsible!" Percy blurted it. "You're a grown adult now. You're...you're twenty-three for Merlin's sake! You ought to be able to keep up not just a proper flat but keep up proper appearances too. You can't expect to get anywhere in life if you can't even navigate your way around a few cleaning charms!"

"Irresponsible?" Ron was indignant. "Excuse me? Do I not have a job? Do I not pay to rent my own flat? Do I not have clean clothes on?" His cheeks burned as red as his hair, and his anger burned hotter still. "I think my appearances are just fine. And you have a lot of nerve telling me I'll never get anywhere. What do I have to do to satisfy you, Percy? What will make me good enough to be your brother?"

This was slightly unfair, to be honest, because Ron really didn't resent any of his brothers, or his sister, anymore. He had grown up in that sense, and after losing Fred, he'd stuck really close with the rest of the Weasleys, hating the knowledge that they were missing one essential piece to their puzzle. But Ron had a temper, and with that temper came a lot of words he didn't mean, flying uncontrollably out of his mouth. He was also nervous about his date, and he didn't need another list of reasons why he'd probably ruin it.

Percy blinked at Ron's outburst. He pursed his lips, watching him in silence. He was considering what to say next. Maybe his words were too harsh.

"Well," he began, his tone serious. "You could start by not screwing up your date with Hermione." A joke. A small, tiny joke.

"Percy..." Ron said, the warning tone in his voice giving way to more of an exasperated sigh. "I'm not planning to screw it up, you know. I would actually like this to go well. But now you've got me worrying about my cleaning charms and all of that. Why do you do that? I don't want to focus on cleaning right now, I've got to sort out what to wear and what to talk about on a date!"

Percy got up.

"Well, maybe if you had all this muck sorted though, you could find something to wear," he grumbled, flinging up his arms in exasperation. "But if you want to borrow one of my suits, I'd be glad to lend you one. They're probably cleaner pressed than yours, if you manage to find it."

"A suit?!" Ron was even more horrified by the thought of formal wear than by the thought of cleaning charms. "I have to wear a suit to a museum?!"
