who's gonna save us? [narrative]
Katie had actually been out to grab lunch for herself, her father, and some of the others in the lab. She might have been the most excitable and spazziest of the Powers siblings (and in a race with Jack for the title of Most Immature), but the girl was sharper than a bag of tacks, in reality. While she, of course, wasn't listed on any of the research of test documents, her father had been allowing her to come down and observe some of what they were doing. It was where she had been that morning, before the siren song of Taco Bell had called. The message from her siblings sent ice through her blood and she immediately pulled out of the drive-through; never the best driver on a good day, she was like a bat out of hell in their father's car now as she raced to get back to the building.
Things weren't allowed to happen to her family. What the H, world!
Breaking into the building was easy enough, although the coolness of this whole superhero rescue was taken away by the gravity of the matter, and who it was concerning. Her first gig as a (un)masked avenger, and she couldn't even enjoy it? When she had a chance to decompress later she would be pissed.
The initial fight itself was something of a blur. Adrenaline and fear and general not knowing what to do combined to make for a less-than-ideal situation as far as memory was concerned. She knew enough to try not to unleash exploding yellow balls of death in a lab where there were dangerous chemicals around (and research to be ruined, woe!), and while her first few actions were punctuated with some extremely girly shrieks, she soon got into it. She might have been a pipsqueak, but she was a pipsqueak with moxie, okay? In short order she was launching herself at would-be-attackers, yanking at hair and clawing at eyes and even biting a few of them. She was absorbing things too, without meaning to. She could feel it building up inside her, that energy that wanted more than anything to be let out. A glance at her hand surprised her -- it was covering her like a second skin almost, that crackling yellow. It escaped from her in an electric slam, knocking a hole into a wall with the body of the attacker it had hit.
The fight was almost over then, and she was about to look for one of her brothers or her sister (in part to ask if they'd seen that!!), when a hand clamped around her mouth, and an arm went around her midsection, trapping her arms against her body. She tried to scream to get attention as she was pulled away from the area by a few of the remaining attackers, eyes widening as she listened to them talking. She wasn't going to be held hostage. And she didn't appreciate being called a freak either, especially when they were talking about knocking her out so that she wouldn't do anything to them.
Well by God, she'd show them doing something.
Struggling didn't really help at all, given that the man who had a hold of her was easily twice her size. She managed to kick one of the others in the nuts, but was rewarded with a hit across the face that shocked her into stillness for a moment. Before she got angry. Blue eyes narrowed, and then she was throwing her head back as hard as possible, hitting her captor in the mouth and hearing a cracking sound. His arms loosened and she shimmied her way into dropping from them, dashing down the hall as she heard them shouting to grab her. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and she shot out a hand to touch the wall, feeling it start to weather and age beneath her fingers as she absorbed it, that crackling yellow filling her again.
She turned around to see the three men running at her, and actually wished that she had something witty to say to them. Unfortunately, all of the lines that she'd practiced had left her head, and there was no time to settle for anything subpar. So she just squeezed her eyes shut and hoped for the best as she send out another blast at the group -- ...and when she opened her eyes she saw that she'd again knocked them through a wall, to the outside. Her siblings, hearing the commotion, had come out to the hallway, and as a group they'd naturally moved to the hole to see where the attackers had gone to.
And were met with a clamoring of reporters, television cameras, and lightbulbs flashing to take their picture. Questions were asked one after the other, microphones shoved into their faces, and after a moment Katie stepped forward. Someone had to talk, right? Clearly, she was the natural choice. ...Sorry, Alex!
"We're the Power Pack. I'm Energizer, and this is Lightspeed, Zero-G, and..Mass Master." Sorry Jack, she hadn't been able to think of anything all that awesome when she'd thought of names for people before. "We're mutants." No use in trying to hide it when they were on camera as being them, right? Might as well try to protect some of the others, though. "No, we don't know anyone else like us. And we aren't vigilantes. We have family in there to protect. And now...we have to go." She looked to her older siblings. Er, Lightspeed take us away?
