Who: Johnny Cooper and Max Main
What: It's high time he met his new cubicle buddy, who is obviously a gay brodawg with many admirers
Where: The Seattle Times, one of the many cubicle bays.
When: Nowish
Warnings: Spilled coffee and the end of preconceived notions about new cubicle buddies.
Johnny showed up at work a bit early, he wasn't the only one there by any means but he was early. He said hello to a few people as he walked through the office space, and didn't bother correcting the girl at the front desk who called said "Good morning Jeff!" when he greeted her. Yesterday he was "George" and the day before that she hadn't responded at all. Small victories he guessed.
He wasn't the type to want to stand out much, he preferred to live his life under the radar as much as possible, he'd tried to do it the other way before and it hadn't ended well for him. There were certain advantages to being as anonymous as possible, it allowed him to move in the right circles without many people batting an eye at all. Hell, the receptionist who he saw and spoke to every day didn't even know his name. Most would be offended, he did his best to keep that emotion at bay.
He stopped in the office kitchen and made himself a cup of pretty bad office coffee and headed to his desk, ah his desk, a four cubicle bay with dividing walls so it was next to impossible to see who you were working next to, something that hadn't been an issue until he actually got his first desk mate. They had spoken on the intranet only, but so far the guy seemed decent enough. He was clearly a better reporter than Johnny was, but he wasn't trying to be the best. Besides, there was nothing wrong with page 3. Not one thing.
The first thing he noticed was that there were flowers on his desk, he didn't know many people here, and certainly no one that would send him flowers, so he knew it had to be a mistake. He assumed they were for Janice from Features who, as Johnny had learned early on, was consistently getting flowers from her mistress. Yes, her mistress. It was all very scandalous. He was shocked, however, to see the note was not for Janice in Features, but was for his new cubicle-buddy, Max. Huh.
Johnny had several preconceived notions about the new writing from the Chronicle, he was witty and had a decent sense of humor, and if Johnny was asked, he saw no reason why they couldn't get along just fine. Though one of the preconceived notions went out the window, he had assumed his desk mate was probably the type of guy who got the girls, got the good stories, and a big old hotshot probably barely out of school and just kept getting lucky on the story front. No one could come from working at the Chronicle to the Times and not feel just a bit cocky that it was one lucky break that got them there. However, he was now revising his notion to his new desk mate being a guy magnet. He didn't think that women usually sent flowers to men, and considering these flowers were definitely for Max he was pretty sure that his many admirers were of the male variety.
Not that it bothered Johnny, he was as forward thinking as the next guy, and all he could think was that not only was the new guy a better reporter but he was also most likely a better dresser. He made up his mind, it was time to meet the new guy face to face.
He sat down in his chair and when he heard the rustling around at Max's desk he spoke easily, "Hey Chronicle, one of your many fans sent you a gift, but they're brightening up my desk so much I might just keep them. Hemi seems to appreciate the new scenery."
